Very happy with this chair. Used this for my mom for 6 years. Lightweight enough for me (smaller female) to easily fold and lift into back of my suv. Made transporting much easier. Worked just as well six years later. Alot of compliments on the checkered pattern, it was always easier to identify her chair from the plain chairs. Only comment, locking the wheels does take a bit of strength to snap them in place, but wasnt an issue for us.

My mother is 86 and now has difficulty getting around with a walker. I wanted to be able to take her places so we could still do activities that she enjoys. But I'm 64 and knew I wouldn't be able to handle a regular wheelchair on my own. So I researched for lightweight wheelchairs and found the Drive Medical Fly Lite Ultra Lightweight Transport Wheelchair on Amazon. It had good reviews and appeared to be what I was looking for. And I liked the idea that it came in some color other than depressing black. The cost was much better than some other chairs I researched. I could not have afforded several hundred dollars. I am very pleased with this lightweight chair. I can handle it by myself in and out of the back of the car, and find the manner in which it folds up very efficient. It's easy to take the footrests on and off, and when I fold it up in the house, it stands on it's own and takes up a very narrow space. I took my Mom to the Texas State Fair and we were able to see the whole thing. I'm not saying it wasn't difficult after a time for someone my age to push another person around for so long, especially going up inclines, but that's my problem, not the chair. The only problem my Mom had was that with the straight back, sitting for so long tired her out. But I think we can alleviate that issue if she occasionally gets out of it, such as to eat or sit on a bench. I've taken her to the movies in it, and she gets out to sit in the theater chair as that's more comfortable for a long sit. But I would recommend this chair to anyone who needs an easy to handle transport chair. The price was right and it's a convenient item to work with. ADDITION July 2013: I've now had this transport chair for about 10 months, so thought I would put in an additional comment. This chair is better than anticipated and thoroughly great for getting my mother around. We've gone a multitude of places in it over the last months, and I'm so glad I purchased this chair. It's still easy to open, close, transport, and use, and my mother now only uses her walker to go to the beauty parlor and to shop at Dillards. Her balance is awful. Everywhere else, I take her in this chair. I've found that in some places I have to ask people for help opening doors (like at Cinemark where there are no automated doors for the handicapped), but the chair has never been an issue for getting mom around. I really do recommend this as a useful, handy, and worthwhile purchase if you need a lightweight chair to get your loved one around in. The cost is excellent for the amount of use this chair provides. A great product!

This was purchased for a friend who is in temporary need of a transport chair. Her husband had been wheeling her around in a standard, heavy wheelchair. The couple were absolutely delighted with this chair - it is comfortable and extremely lightweight, yet very sturdy. There is no assembly required, other than dropping the detachable footrests onto the legs of the chair. Attaching the footrests could not have been easier, they just fit right in to the built-in holder. This chair is very cleverly designed, and folds up easily. The wheels seem very solid and sturdy. I pushed my friend around a bit, and it's very easy to operate. The top half of the back of the chair folds down for easy storage. There are two pockets on the back of the chair - a larger pocket with a velcro-closing flap and a smaller pocket that looks like it would fit a small water bottle. The blue plaid fabric is very pleasing to the eye. I think this is a really amazing chair and well worth the $150. I searched through many transport chairs on Amazon, looking at the pictures and reading the product descriptions and reviews before finally settling on this one. I could not be more pleased with this selection!

We just received this and plan to use it to help an elderly family member just get around when shopping, etc, with family to push the chair for her. First, the great things upon first observation. The chair is light and easy for even an elderly family member to lift and get in the car. It's super comfortable and holds up to 300lbs which is pretty astonishing considering how light the chair is. It is VERY easy to open and close the chair, huge kudos to the manufacturer for the ease of that process. It came completely assembled accept for the foot rests which were just a matter of putting them in place, no tools necessary. It maneuvers very easily and the tires seem well made. There are locks on the foot rests and rear tires. The fabric seems sturdy and there's a nice pocket on the back for a cell phone and another for general stuff. Now the one "not so great" feature. The foot rests go into place simply by placing the brackets over two pins on the frame. It's VERY easy to add the foot rests to the chair and when the foot rests are in use, they pull forward and lock into place which is great. Unfortunately, when it's time to fold up the chair you either have to leave the foot rests sticking out from the front which makes moving the chair difficult, or remove the foot rests all together, otherwise you risk them falling off or flopping around when moving the folded chair. Maybe most people remove them so this isn't an issue, but we don't want to remove the foot rests because it's just an added step and aggravation. If the manufacturer had made it so the foot rests lock in place when they are folded back out of the way this would have been a huge improvement. To solve the issue of them falling off the chair when being moved in the folded position, my husband had to pull the pins out of the chair frame, drill them with holes, put them back in the fram and place cotter pins in the holes. This prevents the bracket from simply sliding off the pins. That modification keeps them from falling off the chair but doesn't keep them from flopping around. We're thinking maybe some bungee cords will solve that problem. It would be simple for the MFG to just add a locking mechanism to the folded state to solve that whole issue. Overall though the first impression of this chair is very good. If it lasts and doesn't fall apart, I'd say you can't go wrong. If the MFG would be responsive to solving the issue with the foot rests, it would be perfect!

I initially wanted this transport chair for myself to use on vacation. After a spinal fusion, and now additional issues with my back, the time I can stand or walk around is very limited. I will admit, I was hesitant to purchase this one because of some of the less than stellar reviews. As it turns out, I ended up using this for my 81 year old dad, who is experiencing a lot of pain walking due to a vascular issue. It was becoming near to impossible to get him from the front porch to the car, not to mention in and out of doctors offices for his many appointments. Now my dad is very stubborn and scoffed at the mention of a wheelchair...well I told him this was mine, but he's welcome to borrow it. Both he and my mom thought this chair was just the neatest thing on earth! Now some details about the actual chair...the leg pieces are extremely easy to get off and on, the foot rests are just plastic -- but they do their job and actually stay up when you flip them up. The leg pieces swing away easily so you can move the person out of the chair without them restricting movement (they are also adjustable for leg length). The rest of the chair is in one piece...kind of like the bag chair of transport chairs! When it's open and you want it closed, fold the back rest down then simply grasp the 2 handles on the seat and pull upwards...voila!...it's closed. I was able to just hold the handles and roll it along next to me like a piece of rolling luggage. It is lightweight, at least easy enough for me to handle, and fits behind the drivers seat of my VW Jetta. I will repeat...easy in...easy out! You do need to stand behind the chair just to steady it and add support for the person as they sit in it -- if you do this simple step, there is no tipping backwards. I'm not very strong and all I had to do was stand behind it and steady it (Dad is 5'9, 160lbs). My dad said it was a smooth ride and I had no trouble pushing the chair over various bumps/cracks in pavement or those metal floor pieces in doorways. Maneuvering around tight office spaces was easy and smooth too. For those who complained about the brakes...I think you're doing it wrong -- I only flipped them into place, but one of the nurses at a dr we visited did an extra push and that fully engaged the brakes in place. So, you actually must apply a little extra pressure to the lever and that does the trick. Aesthetically, this is an attractive chair...very nice shade of cobalt blue plaid with a dark pink/purple running through...frame is a dark blue. There is a cell phone pocket on the back as well as a velcro pouch (I put the tool packet in there). So in conclusion, I highly recommend this chair if you're looking for a lightweight, easy to handle transport chair that can fit in the back seat of your car! It doesn't get easier than this.

My husband is unable to walk any distance, and I have a herniated disc in my back - so getting him out and about was a real problem. The VA provided an electric wheelchair for him - which does not fit into our compact car. They also provided a portable wheelchair (weighing close to 50 pounds) which killed my back every time I had to transport him to the doctor or shopping or - well, really ANYWHERE. Two years of killing my back - and a friend suggested I look into a lightweight transport chair. (duh!) I found this beauty! It arrived about ten days after I ordered it - and we are now able to be out and about as often as he wants to go! The chair is super easy to fold - it fits easily into the backseat of the car. The brakes are wonderful - easy for me to apply and release with my foot. The seat is sturdy and comfortable - (but when we are out on shopping expeditions, i add the egg crate foam seat cushion we purchased separately...) the two side stitched on handles on the seat make for easy folding. My one very slight complaint is that the foot rests are a little cumbersome to lock in place, and if I do not make sure they are locked in place - they can (and do) swing willy-nilly to the sides. I just have to make sure the clips are secure before we go walking. This is the lightest, easiest mode of transport for my chair bound hubby! It's allowed me to take my husband out so much more - thank you for a great product at a very reasonable price!!!

My wife and I read basically every review available on this chair and many others before we purchased this one. My mother cannot walk and my father (and us) needed a light weight, yet strong maneuverable chair to carry my Mom to all her doctor visits (she has many!). Loading and unloading a regular wheel chair is impossible for my 87 year old father and I have a bad back at my young age of 58. This chair is the answer to our prayers and needs. I can not understand the negative reviews after having used this chair for over two months now. Lets remember the intent of this chair; it is not a wheel chair, it is a "transport" chair. It's purpose is to transport a person from home to vehicle to office or treatment and then reverse order. If it were intended to be a wheel chair the company would have made the back wheels large where the user could "wheel" themselves around. Some folks use it for the end all and then complain it will not hold up or fabric rips, etc. My experience with this chair, is even if we used it everyday as a wheel chair, it would hold up for many years because we take good care of it and it is built to last. This chair is well build and I especially love the brakes; they are incredibly tough and anchor the chair from any movement. Only knock is the brakes work so well, they are a bit hard to engage and disengage. Have to put some "uuumph" into them; but, that is really a positive because you do not have to worry about your chair moving with your loved one in it when you lock it down. We love this chair and wished we had purchased one 6 months ago (we were looking at them online). My father can easily load and unload it as it only weighs 17 pounds. My mother loves it because it is comfortable and can be modified with an extra cushion or backrest (really does not need one but sometimes this is purely psychological). She also loves the color and snazzy look; certainly does not appear to anyone as a wheel chair type device. And one of the best features it this little guy is incredible maneuverable in tight places. The office my mother visits for acupuncture is tiny; remember she cannot walk. I or my father can wheel her right up to the patient table, stand her up and sit her right down on it. Tried this with a regular wheel chair and it was a "No Can Do" deal. All I can say is this chair is everything we need to care for our ailing mother and she loves it. Right out of the box it is fully assembled other than the foot rests but they are super simple to attach. Foot rests also swing out of the way for easy in and out. On a side note: the carry bag that attaches to the back is awesome as well. We carry all possible accessories she might need to these many doctor visits. Nice to not have to carry an extra hand bag to keep up with essentials to give your loved one peace of mind. I do know life is much easier with this chair and best of all, my mother loves it!

My wife has used one of these since January 2015, when a serious leg injury created the need for something more than a walker when she was not at home. We examined a variety of models from several manufacturers at a local and reputable seller of medical equipment, deciding on this one because of its sturdiness, lightness, ease of transportation, and durability (after four years, durability certainly is evident). Recently, we bought another one for a reason made clear later. The chair has held up well under daily and careful use. (Careful use is vital, given that this device clearly is not designed for rough treatment.) The backrest has faded somewhat but is still quite functional, and the right rear wheel has begun to split and disintegrate under the split. And now, the deficiencies: 1. First, the less serious deficiency. The brakes become increasingly ineffective at holding the chair immobile as the tires on the back wheels gradually wear and decrease the diameter. There is no way described in the instructions to adjust the brakes to account for this, nor could I see any way to do it upon careful examination. This is an unfortunate and potentially dangerous deficiency that should be corrected (what if the person in the chair cannot put his/her foot down to hold it in place when the brakes have become only semi-effective?). 2. This brings up the truly significant deficiency: The cost of replacement parts. In excess of $30 for one wheel is, frankly, a glaring misery and is possible only because wheels are specific to this company's chairs only. Other companies do about the same, however, so this apparently is an industry outrage. When I found this out, I began looking online for these chairs and was gratified to see that Amazon sells these chairs for $135.19 + free shipping. I ordered it recently, and two days later it was here. (I should add that I paid over $175 four years ago for the first chair at a local pharmacy and medical supplies place, which was not a foolish choice but urgently necessary because we could not wait). Foolish? Well, consider that both rear wheels were well worn, so both needed replacement even if the left one had not split. That would have been $62, the best price I could find (the difference between best and worse prices was minuscule). The front wheels would have needed replacement soon, another big expense. For a little more than twice the cost of those rear wheels, we got a new chair. But with a new chair, I now have the luxury of taking the old rear wheels and seeing how I can re-clad them with tires or, alternatively, how I can adapt an off-the-shelf 8-inch wheel with bearings to the purpose. $30 a wheel is a decent enough incentive.
