Style: 128GB SSD
So far really good laptop for the price! Fast and lightweight and the perfect size! Great battery life and fingerprint scanner works so well. No issues, could use more storage but otherwise it’s great. For some reason couldn’t take off S mode for free so had to buy Windows. Will update if anything comes up! ... show more

Worked great right out of the box! I like the smaller screen and weight compared to my old Dell 15 inch laptop. This newer model boots up quickly and is much faster than my old Dell. Highly recommend!

  • Spend the extra money for a better one
Style: 128GB SSD
This is a sleek, lightweight, small laptop that has a decent bit of power inside. The screen is beautiful and I love that the keys are lit so I can type even in the dark. It is even powerful enough to run some games, though nothing too intense (I'm mostly a Sims gamer on the PC). However, there are a few trade-offs that I don't like, making my review 4 stars instead of 5. First is the touch pad. Every laptop I've ever owned had a scroll bar on the side of the touch pad. This made web browsing much easier and twice as fast. Since it's not a touch screen, you will rely on the touch pad a lot, and it just isn't as great as most others (or maybe I was just spoiled with really good ones). At times it feels not very responsive, then it is ultra sensitive at others. This is a computer with which I definitely use prefer to use a mouse. Second is the keyboard. The layout is off just enough to throw off your typing. Again, maybe it's just me, but the keys seem to be spaced just a hair farther apart, making me mis-type quite a bit (I am typing this review on it and have had to edit A LOT). You have to press harder on the keys, too, which just adds to the frustration. I had hoped I could use this laptop to write my next book, but all it does is frustrate me. The Windows version that comes pre-installed is a joke. It would not let me install anything that isn't in the Microsoft store, so no Google Chrome or Google Drive, which I use regularly. Fortunately, you are able to activate normal Windows 10 and use the computer without the restrictions. The thing that gets me the most is the features for the money. It seems that some of the more important features, such as a great keyboard and touch pad, have been sacrificed for things not as important, like backlit keys. I have used plenty of Dell laptops and this is the first one I just don't care for that much. It still has great speed and my main complaint (the touch pad) can be easily solved with a wireless mouse, I just feel that there are other, better options out there for the same or a slighter higher price. ... show more

  • Basic office and media work only...
Style: 128GB SSD
...NOT for even retro gaming. Got this laptop as my old Samsung was dying. I use my laptops for writing, streaming, and light gaming. Nothing too strenuous, just binding of isaac or starcraft. While netflix and Hulu were no problem, getting any game to load was darn near impossible. I have no idea why, but even C&C Red Alert 3 and original Starcraft stuttered to the point of inoperability on this thing. Additionally, the new S-Mode that Microsoft has tacked on their OS, ostensibly to make it hard to screw up your settings or have your data stolen, made it horribly frustrating to disable even just to install Chrome or Firefox. Overall, I'd only recommend this laptop for office work and streaming. One plus, the fingerprint recognition has made it easier for me to log in for my partner when she wants to watch Hulu. Other than that? Bleh. ... show more

  • Great General Purpose Laptop
Style: 128GB SSD
Build quality is very good. The laptop weighs 3 lbs 5 ounces, so it’s not an ultralight but not a boat anchor either. The 13 7/8 inch display is bright and crisp with and the resolution is 1920 x 1080. The laptop came with 4GB of RAM and 120 GB SSD storage. This model has an AMD Ryzen 3-3200U CPU clocked at 2.6 Ghz and it feels pretty responsive. The Passmark CPU benchmark is 5088 which is close to an Intel Core-i7 of just a couple of years ago. Newer Intel Cores are much higher but can cost 3 to 4 times as much. Setup was easy but the Windows default setup harvests a lot of personal data and could be used to target users for follow-on ads or promotions. It was not obvious how to complete the setup without signing up for a Microsoft email account but after a little Internet research I figured it out. On this laptop Windows also offered a couple of different login options: It allows the users to set up a PIN number login and it offers bio-metric authentication, since the 5480 has a fingerprint reader incorporated into the power button. The fingerprint reader is a very cool feature and it is nicely implemented on this laptop. Since this computer will be used by a group of people, I did not set up the fingerprint login but went with the PIN number. It's still secure and very fast and easy to remember. Going into the review I thought the laptop would be under-resourced with only 4 GB ram and 120 GB storage but I didn't find that to be true. I ran all my favorite apps: various browsers, word processors, drawing apps, and spreadsheets and they all ran fine. As I write this I am using Notepad and LibreOffice Calc spreadsheet, LibreOffice Writer, and Firefox browser loaded and playing a Youtube video in the background. With all that going on there was still no detectable lag or delay in performance or task switching. Task Manager is reporting 88% of RAM in use, but only 180 Mb of swap space being used. That shows that the current tasks are fitting into 4GB. But just barely. A more demanding load would cause more swapping and that might impact performance (speed). However, It's not clear how bad that would be. The SSD is really fast and the CPU seems to be able to handle it. Most users will be completely satisfied with the speed of this laptop. I did manage to make it stall when I tried to play 4k video. It was a little jerky when it tried to render 4k at 30 frames per second and stalled completely trying to render 4k at 60 frames per second. I have computers that will render 4k at 60fps, but they cost at least 4 times what the Inspiron 5485 costs. Users that have huge libraries of music or photos may want to upgrade the SSD. One of the advantages of the Inspiron line is the ease of upgrading. With a small screwdriver and some patience it’s very easy to increase the RAM and SSD storage. Summary: The Inspiron 14 5485 is a very good general purpose laptop. Light enough and small enough to fit in a backpack but powerful enough for most school/home/office tasks. It would be suitable for a high school or college student or for most home use unless you are doing big application builds or high resolution video rendering. ... show more
