  • Alienware beauty with a few issues
I have two Alienware laptops, a 13 inch and a 17 inch, both purchased and used daily since about four years ago. I've never had a problem or complaint about either one. They've both been workhorses and absolute joys to own and use. I was eager to get a new one just as a backup, extra laptop, and wanted this intermediate size laptop. Of course I wanted another Alienware, since I have been so happy with my other two. I had to return this unfortuately, and very reluctantly. Here are the pros and cons: PROS: 1. This machine is gorgeous. The lights and ability to set the exact lighting scheme and colors make this a very fun laptop to own. The colors of the lights are beautiful. It's a work of art to look at. 2. Amazingly beautiful screen, vibrant colors, wonderful detail, and an incredible experience to watch movies and videos on. 3. Very easy to set up and use out of the box. I found this to be a very nice experience and was using this on the internet within ten minutes of unboxing it. Cons: 1. I am a touch typist. I use my right thumb to press the space bar. While the keyboard was silent like my other Alienwares, the space bar made a loud clicking sound each time I used it. If I pressed it very gently there was no sound but trying to type on this as usual using touch typing made it a terrible experience. I had to listen to the constant non- stop clicking of the space bar. It was impossible not to be distracted by the sound. 2. The keys on the keyboard are a tiny bit wider spaced apart than the keys on my older Alienwares, and also they are slightly harder to depress. I found it very hard to make the adjustment to using more hand strength to touchtype on the keyboard. 3. The trackpad is not slippery enough. I felt like I was pulling on the skin on my fingers while trying to slide my fingers over it. I tried setting the trackpad to it's most sensitive setting, which didn't help. I was pressing my fingers down hard on the trackpad and in the process felt my skin being pulled on it. 4. I found System Restore didn't work. I tried to set a restore point, and when I tried to get back to it, it wasn't there. I tried restoring the laptop to it's original settings three times, and each time got a message that something was wrong and it wouldn't work. 5. Incredibly heavy. I found this felt like it was twice the weight of my older Alienware's, which are not light machines. I consider this a desktop replacement, not a truly portable laptop, due to the weight. It was with a heavy heart that I had to send this back to Amazon. I had loved the laptop, it's beauty and ease of setup, but it didn't have the amazingly smooth action on the keyboard and trackpad, and the lack of a working System Restore was the final dealbreaker for me. I don't know if the keyboard and trackpad is like this on all of these, or I just got a bad one. For me it was not usable for typing and that was the main reason I loved my older Alienwares. ... show more

  • Great machine with some questionable parts
Let me first say that this machine is great. Gaming performance is really good as I was having a constant 60 fps in overwatch. Build quality is fantastic. It feels sturdy. Love the premium materials used and love the ability to customize the lighting. But there are a couple of issues I have with this. First, the original storage this comes with is way too slow. I’d recommend getting an SSD (either m.2 or sata ssd) to help with performance. I bought a 500 GB Samsung 970 evo to use as my boot drive. Used Samsung data migration to clone the OS to it and it works perfectly. Secondly, the hybrid drive listed on this page is not a hybrid drive. I looked at the HDD and found it it is a 1TB 5400 RPM drive which explains the very slow performance out of the box. To me that’s false advertising and I feel people should be aware. Overall this is a great machine when you move to an ssd. Performance is terrific with gaming. But I feel it’s time to stop using HDD’s for premium gaming laptops. They are too slow for what’s needed today. ... show more

  • Good but one flaw
I bought this as a gaming only computer mostly to play World of Warcraft. I do not use it for any other purpose. I have been playing same game on HP Omen and 2106 MacBook Pro. What I like: 1. The auto detect graphic setting is ultra, so good out of the bag. Depend on the zone I get 40-70 FPS on ultra, so the graphic power is acceptable for the price. 2. The sound with headset on is spectacular with my low end Beats over the ear. I believ this is the highlight of the machine. What is not so impressive: 1. The screen. MacBook Pro and HP Omen screens beat the pants off this model. The color is a little muted, overall there is no pop in the graphics. 2. The keyboard is surprisingly flimsy for a thick heavy gaming laptop. Final Verdict: A good buy and I will enjoy it for at least 3 years. But the screen is a deal breaker and I will buy a different model/make. ... show more

  • Always wanted
I knew what I was getting into when I wanted this the heating problems and all other than my own mistakes which thank god I was able to correct on my own I haven't had much trouble if any with it if I did I waited for the next update that usually fixed the problem I have never used the original hard drive with its original OS on it it's a mechanical drive I bought it this way on purpose to upgrade the drives myself instead, once I bought my two one terabyte M.2 drives I cloned the original on to it never having so much as started it up the original drive is in my gun safe where it will stay if I ever need it ;) next repaste the processor and graphics chips already have the new paste just waiting for time to do it and yes mine runs pretty warm high 80's low 90's C while gaming ... show more

  • love it
If you want a laptop to work and play, it's an excellent option! Now if you are looking for something portable to carry around and support it on your legs for 4 hours, I recommend you to see other DELL laptops, smaller and lighter. Like: The quality of the materials With an SSD it is very fast! excellent for working and gaming Alienware software Keyboard with hotkeys (Configurable colors ... you never get bored) Screen with a lot of brightness and practically without bleed Silent, even playing!, stays always cold. Configuration is high-end for its price Everyone likes its design ... definitely an Alienware :) Dislike: It is big and heavy Came with a badly armed key, now it's fine Charger is giant and with an uncomfortable cable Drivers gave conflicts and errors, but after updating it is already working very well The hard disk is very slow, I recommend installing an SSD No card reader! why!? Short battery life, but it's not the purpose to use it unplugged ... show more
