As a newly divorced dude, I decided to pick up pickleball for exercise and meeting new people. I needed a paddle. Sure, I could afford a more expensive paddle and get something with Ben Johns name on it, but I wanted something that would fit my game. I am naturally a bit of a spin player in tennis and I assumed that I would be doing the same in pickleball. Because the swing path is so much shorter, I didn't realize how much my paddle would impact my ability to spin. I'm thankful I got my Gamma because I am able to put a considerable amount of spin on my shots with a short swing. The weight is just right and I like the handle a lot. I will probably put some lead tape on it as I continue to improve my game. That is not a criticism of the paddle; it's not too light. I also really like the styling of this. I have now played with the Obsidian 16 paddle about 6 different times. The longer handle fits my hand much better. I seem to be able to put even more spin on the ball with the Obsidian 16. I also seem to be able to hit the touch shots more consistently. Overall this was a great purchase and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a performance type paddle. ... show more

I get a good amount of spin with this paddle. The weight is good for me and haven't needed to add lead tape. I like it as much as any of the more expensive paddles I have tried.

A massive upgrade from Gamma. Love the control and balance for volleying at the net, as well as the power and spin from the baseline. The honeycomb trio is great in the humidity of Florida. SO glad I upgraded it has made playing so much more fun.

    • Terrific Control Oriented Paddle for Those Who Create Their Own Power

Coming from a competitive tennis and ping pong background, I was intrigued by this pickleball paddle in particular. I liked the slender, elongated design, and I appreciated that it came from Gamma, a brand I already knew and trusted. I'm impressed with the build quality overall. It definitely feels like it's on a higher level than many, if not all of the other paddles I have. I own a few high-end paddles from varying brands, but this one feels like it is well suited to a control oriented game. Since I have reasonably good technique, I can generate my own power and spin, not wanting the paddle to do the work for me. I don't want any more or less power than what I'm putting on the ball, since I value placement and accuracy over raw power. Since pickleball is a placement game, this was a good choice for me. It does feel a bit different hitting with this then some of the power oriented paddles. This one has a sharper feeling on contact. It's not uncomfortable, but you definitely feel the ball well. I may fiddle with the weight and balance a bit, but out of the box, I'm very happy with it. It swings very quickly, but is very stable through contact. If you are a tennis player moving into the pickleball space, this could be a good choice as you already have the arm strength necessary to get the ball moving. ... show more
