Description

A resonator back provides more projection of sound in the Goodtime 2. It's made here in the USA, at the Deering shop with the same tooling used to make the top of the line banjos. Greg Deering designed the Goodtime banjos because there were no low priced banjos of enough quality for people to actually learn on without difficulty or giving up. He remembers what it was like to want a good banjo and not be able to afford one, so his gift to others is the Goodtime banjo line.

  • Great banjo!
Got this banjo today with the hard -shell case and the product was packed very well with no damage. The bridge on the banjo was lying flat but after setting the bridge according to Deering specifications, the banjo has a really nice tone and is light and easy to pick and fret. Very pleased with this banjo and would recommend a Deering banjo to anyone wanting a high - quality banjo. Made in the USA, nothing better! ... show more

  • Beautiful, Bright Tone, Solid Construction, Easy Action, Lightweight.
I bought this banjo about a month and a half ago after agonizing over what banjo to get, how much to spend. Finally a redditor just told me to get a deering goodtime 2, and I pulled the trigger. This banjo is lovely. I've been playing it every day , and the tone is so rich, warm, and bright. The action is really nice - I never have to push too hard on the fretboard to get a nice sound. Maybe the frets are a tiny, tiny bit too high or something, because I actually get a bit of tone distortion if I push too hard, but I think this is unavoidable with a fretted instrument. The sound is really good, I can't emphasize this enough. The tuning can be a little squirrely sometimes, every day I have to re-tune because it fluctuates just a tad (maybe from humidity/temp, hard to say) but I will say that the tuning fluctuates in the 'same direction' - so even if I didn't retune, the instrument would sound fine by itself. I went to a music store after purchasing this banjo to try out other banjos, and I think in general, this banjo's tone is so good, it compares to much more expensive banjos; yet somehow this instrument feels like half the weight of some of the other resonator banjos I tried. The resonator on this banjo can be detached with some phenageling, and I think the instrument is identical to a deering goodtime if you do this. Some banjo players will holler than you have to have a built in resonator if you're going to call it a bluegrass banjo, and if you detach the resonator, you don't automatically have a clawhammer banjo, but I think the detachable resonator gives the new banjo player a convenient way to experiment with different sounds without having to buy two banjos. I think this banjo looks great, sounds great. You're going to love it long past your beginner days, and I hear for some, its the only banjo they ever own. I could see myself upgrading someday, or maybe just upgrading the tuning machines, but I'm really happy right now. The case quality included here is great - nothing mind blowing, but there's a nice compartment inside under the neck to store stuff like a capo, spare picks, a tuner, etc. The interior is soft and padded, I feel like I could drop the banjo in the case by a couple feet, and it would survive. The outer pocket on the case is easily voluminous to store sheet music and several music books - I think you could fit an inch thick stack of music in there if you wanted and still close the pocket. I'm just happy to have a hard case included with this banjo - I suppose I might go for something a little sexier looking if I ever walked around outside with a case, but its super nice just to have something protective to put the banjo in on the way to lessons. ... show more

  • American Quality
I'm an old beginner banjo player. For a couple of months I used a Fender banjo to take lessons. It's a 20 year old banjo and not made by Fender any longer. I found out that I can learn to play. No talent, but I play for my enjoyment and I love playing! I decided to see what other banjos were available. I wanted American made, light weight, easy playability and great tone. I did 3 days of researching banjo brands. I found Deering. I talked to my instructor and he recommended the Deering brand as top quality, made in California and the top beginners banjo, the Goodtime II. When it arrived from UPS it was incredibly well protected for shipping. It took a while to get the banjo case unpacked. The case is a hard case, very sturdy, yet not heavy. Inside, the Goodtime II was wrapped, too. Trust me, this thing would survive getting run over by a Semi and survive!! Once released from packing is a very nice looking blonde banjo. It's incredibly light for a resonator banjo. Under 7 lbs. I tuned it and was struck by the tone. Bright, loud with a nice ring. It's not an ornate banjo. It's beautiful in the simplicity. It is easy to play. Sounds great, has a 6 year factory warranty and if you are talented you won't have to buy a newer banjo unless you want to spend $1,000 or much more on a professional quality banjo. I cannot recommend this banjo high enough! It is quality that you can feel and hear. If you're serious about learning to play the banjo, this is the banjo for you. American made. ... show more

  • Great Banjo but gig bag received, not hard case.
First one I received had gig bag vs hard case and there was a small crack in the side of the neck near the nut. Make sure you inspect any new instrument very closely when you receive it. I Returned it and Amazon promptly sent a replacement. Replacement was perfect, but once again. no hard case. Gig bag was a Deering product with the embroidered eagle design. While an ok gig bag, it wasn't a hard case. I opted to just purchase a Crossrock ABS hard case here on Amazon and it was a perfect fit and a well made case. I'm extremely pleased with the Goodtime 2 banjo. Crisp, clean sound and very well made. Action is perfect and combined with the light strings that come with it make it a great banjo to learn on that you won't have to struggle with while learning. I doubt a new player (if you keep practicing and playing) would grow out of it or feel the need to upgrade for quite some time. If you do decide to upgrade, used ones hold their value well if taken care of and are sought after instruments to learn on. ... show more

  • Lives up to the brand
Deering has always been kind of banjos. This banjo has excellent craftsmanship and action of a Deering without the 3-5 k you would spend on their concert banjos. Lightweight, and a crisp tone for the campfire when you want to keep your other one packed up.

  • Excellent Banjo
I was pleased with the prompt service. Banjo was shipped the same day I ordered it! It arrived a few days later in good condition. The banjo is finely finished and just wreaks of quality. I couldn't be more pleased. The hard shell case is solid and beautiful and keeps the banjo well protected. Now I just have to improve to justify playing such a fine instrument. Quality banjos are expensive but I believe this banjo is worth every penny I paid for it. If you are serious about playing the banjo and don't want to break the bank getting one. Take a hard look at this banjo! ... show more
