Description

Class reunions: a time for memories—good, bad, and, as Virgil Flowers is about to find out, deadly—in this New York Times bestselling thriller from John Sandford. Virgil knows the town of Trippton, Minnesota, a little too well. A few years back, he investigated the corrupt—and as it turned out, homicidal—local school board, and now the town’s back in view with more alarming news: A woman’s been found dead, frozen in a block of ice. There’s a possibility that it might be connected to a high school class of twenty years ago that has a mid-winter reunion coming up, and so, wrapping his coat a little tighter, Virgil begins to dig into twenty years’ worth of traumas, feuds, and bad blood. In the process, one thing becomes increasingly clear to him. It’s true what they say: High school is murder. Read more

  • Virgil is back and Virgil is still Virgil...which is a good thing.
Format: Hardcover
I am one of those people who have read all of the Virgil Flowers series along with the Prey Series and over the years they have given me a lot of reading pleasure and I am always excited when a new offering is released. Virgil Flowers, better known as ‘that F – ing Flowers’ returns to the smallish town of Tippton, Minnesota where in a previous novel Virgil arrests (for murder) the entire school board, breaks up a large Meth Lab and shuts down a dog stealing ring. While this repeat location seems to have disturbed some readers I personally was delighted. The reason for this is that a few of the familiar characters make reappearances and there is less ‘road time’ for Virgil. One of the few aspects of both the Flowers series and the Prey series is that many pages consists of characters spending page after page dashing here and there and the author, Sandford, gives a road by road, turn by turn and café by café account of each and every trip which I find to me more filler than adding to the story. In this novel we have much less windshield time and more story and plot. It is cold – the dead of winter which complicates things. The leading banker in down is found murdered by a fisherman and there is no motive but a large group of possible suspects. Virgil must do some deep digging and does it in a typical Flowers fashion. I have to admit that during the first 50 or so pages of this book I had a smile of my face and actually laughed (or giggled) throughout much of it. I found the dialog between characters to be as amusing and sharp as ever and I found the ‘whodunit’ aspect of the story to be up to Sandford’s normal high standards. The reading was smooth and I found myself drawn to not only Virgil but a number of other characters inhabiting this work. I must admit that I read this from cover to cover with very little letting off until I was finished...my wife did the same thing after I had finished...we both enjoyed this one. As a side note – I have lived and traveled all over the U.S. over the past 70 years and spent time in Minnesota and have traveled through the state; always in the summer. I doubt seriously if I will ever make a trip there during the winter....Good grief – I hate the cold and admire those that thrive on it. I cannot wait for the next ‘Flowers” offering. ... show more

  • ALWAYS GREAT READING
Format: Kindle
It's easy to become enamored with Sandford' s writing. His plots are always satisfying, and each have their tense moments. The Flowers series, unlike the Prey novels are moved along more by the interesting plot and oft witty dialogue than the drama of chasing a serial killer or a particularly gruesome murder with a who done it theme, and Deep Freeze was like that. Virgil Flowers, the protagonist, is a man of great depth, a LAWMAN who disdains carrying his gun and avoids confrontation whenever he can, but who more often than not shoots one or more of the bad guys. He prefers to solve his cases by detecting and intuiting the clues that lead him to his antagonist. Flowers is tough when he needs to be, gentle with his women and downright funny when cutting up with his fellow lawmen. I commend Sandford' s latest Flowers novel to his followers but highly recommend Deep Freeze be bought along with earlier Flowers tales to first absorb the depth of this beloved character. ... show more

  • Another great Virgil Flowers novel
Format: Kindle
Virgil is my kind of cop. He works alone until he calls for help. He usually has his boat hooked to the back of his truck always ready to go fishing. He is sent to places to figure out unusual crimes. This time the murder of a prominent business owner who has been found in the frozen river. Virgil starts following each lead trying to track down the last evening of the victim only to have another murder of her best friend happen, now he has two murders to solve. Follow along as Virgil uses his unique method of solving crimes finally catches the person who murdered the two women. The only thing left is the author never mentioned about who shot at Virgil’s vehicle. I know most likely the same as the bad guy but it was still a loose end. Or it might have been one of the people connected with another case going on. Who knows. The matter is sort of settled but in an off hand way. I love these books as well as all the Prey books. This author sucks one in and keeps your interest. ... show more

  • All That and a Bag of Chips
Format: Kindle
I don't know how John Sandford does it. His novels are compulsively readable, and un-put-down-able. The book I read before this took me an entire weekend and several days out of the ensuing week. I finished Deep Freeze in three evenings, after work. The Sandford formula is not complex. Someone in rural Minnesota commits a murder; the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (Is there really such a thing?) dispatches veteran investigator Virgil Flowers, and through his knowledge accumulated through experience, he solves the crime. The stories always unfold in a smooth, water-streaming-downhill flow. In Deep Freeze, readers know who the killer is before knowing there's been a crime. Flowers arrives in Trippton, Minnesota--a town he's visited before-- to look into matters. En route, he is directed by a Federal colleague to aid an investigation into the illegal manufacture and distribution of talking Barbie dolls that have been altered to say some naughty things. Thus the exasperated Virgil rattled the entire population of Trippton by looking into two vastly different crimes at the same time. Does he solve them both? Well, my friends, books are out there to be read. I can promise that reading Deep Freeze is like sitting down in a comfortable chair with a party sized bag of chips, vowing to eat only a few, and then the next thing you know, the bag is empty. An enormously fun and easy read, and a worthy entry in the Sandford canon. ... show more
