  • Phenomenal rod for the price
I’ll start by saying the listings for these rods on Amazon are horribly confusing and often mislabeled so double check the sku. In this case, this is the LAG702MFS, which denotes a 7’0” 2-piece medium-power fast-action rod. Make sure that’s the one you want before you hit buy. That said, that’s Amazon’s fault. As for the rod itself, it’s probably the best sub-$50 rod I’ve ever felt. SUPER light and very sensitive. At this price point a lot of rods are cheap fiberglass junk, but this one is a proper all-graphite rod and would still be a good value at 50-60 bucks IMO. At $35 it’s a steal. I will say the handle style is a little weird and different from many other rods and felt a little uncomfortable with no reel on it just out of the box, but once I actually put a reel on it (an old Daiwa Regal 2500 I had lying around) it feels very good in the hand. Casts little 1/8oz rooster tails excellently. I bought this rod as a backup/spare for bass fishing, but now I’m excited to try it out fishing for stocked trout come springtime because of how well it casts light lures. The flipside is that a 3/4oz max rating seems a bit high, I wouldn’t go above 5/8oz, but 1/8 to 5/8oz is still a very wide range that covers almost all freshwater fishing presentations. ... show more

  • Probably a good rod, but II returned it.
Probably a good rod, but it appeared the handling of bulk rods gave it a beating before it ever arrived with a bent guide and a broken tip. The upper and lower pieces were placed in a loosely fitting box with no padding. My guess is they have two bins of bulk tops and bottoms and just grab one of each, and who knows what treatment those bulk packages received. Reading reviews I see there are perhaps too many rods that arrive broken. ... show more

  • Rather Difficult to Get This Delivered, but Otherwise Excellent Rod!
Size: 7 Feet Color: Black
This rod is probably the best deal going for a quality casting rod. It can be difficult (impossible?) to actually find another inexpensive one-piece rod as most in this price range are 2 or even 3 pieces. Now, it's personal opinion as to whether or not a one-piece rod is superior to a multi-piece rod, but it's been my personal experience that a one-piece rod is better, as I have had several multi-piece rods (not this namebrand) fail at the joint while fishing. This rod does not have micro-guides (which would be better in my opinion), but it does have an appropriate, if not more, amount of guides for its length. I do feel that the shorter versions of this rod do not have enough guides, but this 701 model does. I really like the design of the handles/butt (especially how they are separated and not continuous) and the foam is very durable. I've had numerous inexpensive rods with cork handles prematurely fail on me, but I own 10 different Daiwa Laguna casting and spinning rods with this same handle material and none of them have failed. The reel mount is sturdy and stays tight, and it even has a nice hook keeper. I don't know if I would call the action on this rod "fast" like Daiwa does (I feel it's more moderate), and I would probably rate the power of this rod "Medium Plus" (if there was such a category) rather than "Medium Heavy", but I think that purchasers of this rod know what they're getting in terms of power by the line rating of 10-20#. Although most true "Medium" power rods are only rated for 17# line, most "Medium-Heavy" rods are typically rated for more than just 20# line. The only caveat to this one-piece rod is actually receiving it when shipped (versus picked up in a store). My rod was "sold/shipped by Amazon" yet for whatever reason, Amazon decided to ship the rod via USPS rather than have Amazon deliver it themselves. Remember, the version I purchased is 701 (7' one-piece), and out of all the shipping companies out there, USPS is the most notorious for not being able to handle "oversized" or unusually sized packages. In my particular situation, my USPS delivery driver is not a USPS employee and is instead from a 3rd-party company that uses their own civilian vehicle (in this case an economy sized sedan) to deliver the mail in my region. The delivery person's vehicle is simply not large enough to handle an 8' long box. So I received a notice in my mailbox that a delivery attempt was made, but the package was "oversized". No other explanation as to what was going to happen, if another attempt would be made, if I needed to pick up the package, etc. Basically, they were simply refusing to deliver the package because it couldn't fit in their delivery vehicle. Amazon support was of little help, as they recommended I call USPS and "insist the package be delivered as Amazon requested". All this was doing was putting me in the middle between Amazon (the shipper/seller) and USPS (the delivery/shipping company). After spending an hour in an Amazon support chat and speaking to four different support people (supposedly each one was a required escalation), I actually gave up resigning to the fact that I simply was not going to be able to get this rod. However, apparently one of those support escalations resulted in an actual contact with USPS (even though none of them told me this), and the 3rd-party delivery person's supervisor ended up making the delivery in their larger vehicle later that day. Would that have happened had Amazon support not contact them? I'm not sure. All that being said, though, it was difficult enough to receive this rod that I do not think I would order it through Amazon again and would likely just buy it elsewhere in person since it is apparently difficult to get it shipped/delivered. Excellent rod though! Highly recommend it! FYI, I paired it with an equally lower priced but excellent KastKing Zephyr baitcasting reel. ... show more

  • Really great as a light surf rod
Size: One Size Color: Black
This in an awesome, inexpensive 1 piece rod. I use this as a light surf/jetty rod, and I'm very impressed with its light weight and strong backbone. It is flexible enough to zing weights a light as 1/8 oz a good distance with very good accuracy. Fighting fish with it is fun and I've never worried about it snapping, even with some big halibut and sand bass on the line. I spool it with 6 lb, so finesse and patience is required. Buy this rod and have some fun. ... show more

  • Flimsy and breaks easily
Very flimsy. Broke in the secant cast. Looks good but not strong enough for the minimal job. Other half of the rod broke on the weight of a casting reel.
