Very reliable reel, excellent value, and my favorite thing is that I can service and troubleshoot it myself thanks to TackleAdvisor's detailed videos on YouTube.

Recieved a busted reel, so hard to turn. Still havent recieved my replacement. Got a BG 1500 thats really nice, but doesnt excuse the fact of recieving a defective $110 reel

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Built Solid
Bought this reel for a 9 ft crappie rod. A little overkill, but like a larger reel. Went through a season of moderate use with no issues. Plenty of line capacity for it's purpose. Was overly impressed when a muskie decided he wanted my crappie more than I did. The drag was put to the test for about 10 minutes before broke the flurocarbon leader off at the boat. Needless to say the reel performed like a champ to get the big beast that far on a noodle rod with 6 lb test. Needed another reel for a new rod this spring and bought another of these. Don't think that there's a reel that's more bang for the buck out there. For toughness or fishability, this is the one. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Took my new rod and reel out for a test and I couldnt be happier.
The reel is very nice. Smooth and solid reel. Today I hooked up with two bull pups and they put up a great fight but this reel handled it nicely. The bigger than standard reel handle made quick work out of these pups’s . I will update if I have any problems with the reel but first time out of the box it performed flawlessly ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars Good reels with a few weak areas
First let me say that I have been using the bg series reels exclusively on my fishing charters for around 5 years. The reels get a ton of use and stand up well. There are a few recurring issues that I have noticed and what bothers me is Daiwa's lack up support/customer service. The two major issues I have are the threading on the left side of reel (typical right handed fisherman) is shallow and stripes out. To replace the part you have to purchase the entire pinion and drive unit assembly which costs $40 plus shipping. To much for a $100 reel. I will say that as a guide Im sure I swap handle sides over much more then a recreational fisherman would so keep that in mind. I am sure this adds to the issue. The other issues is the female thread on a few handles has also striped out. I now have 6 2500 size reels sitting in a box unusable because of this. What's stinks is the threading itself is removable but daiwa does not offer this part for sale. Just an honest heads up. Especially to guides or people that may have lefties at home and swapping handle sides is a necessity. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Great Reel but has a Cold Weather Flaw
This is a great reel for the price! Can be used in salt or fresh water. The only issue is in cold weather(under 20°) the anti reverse switch fails and the reel back spins. Once back fishing in weather above 32°, there is no issue. I will be buying more of these reels to use solely on the warm months in brackish/saltwater. ... show more
