I have a number of macaws as pets and a couple of cockatoos. If you have parrots, you know toys for them can be very expensive, and none of them last very long. Although we do make wood toys for our pets, they seem to really enjoy chewing on, shredding, and unbraiding, the rope toys. I hang these from the top of the cage using a chain and a quick link. When buying rope toys for parrots, it's important they are made of cotton. Other materials can be harmful to their digestive system if swallowed. It's also important to remove the rope toy if it becomes too shredded as parrots can entangle their feet and legs in them. Having been a parrot breeder for over 30 years, I have found that the rope toys can be beneficial for parrots that pluck as they tend to chew on the toys rather than their feathers. Since these rope toys are inexpensive, it won't break the bank to replace them. The reason for a 4-star rating instead of 5-star is that these rope toys are only 1" in diameter. Judging from the product page, the diameter of the braid is the same for all of the longer lengths. Whether buying these toys for a large chewing dog or for parrots, a 1" diameter won't last very long. Even so, considering the price, I would buy them again and recommend them. I had gotten a knotted rope before from a different company and it started falling apart immediately after playing tug of war with my lab (one of the strands broke). I returned it and got this one. So far it has held up very well and my lab loves it. There is very little fraying so I believe it will last a long time. ... show more

If you have a chewer dog like I have, don't get this. If you have a puppy, it would be good for teething but if they like to rip things to shreds, keep it outside. My pit/lab mix had this tore apart in about 2 days....string everywhere. Luckily she is an outdoor dog so it was easy to clean up. These are good to play tug-of-war with and she loves that. One other thing to be aware of....if your dog likes to shake their head while chewing (like they have prey in their mouth), this can hurt you and them if they swing their head with enough force and the end hits you or them...due to the length. Our dog likes to swing her head back and forth and more than once this chew toy hit her in the head. We have since quit buying these types of toys because she quit playing with them....we think because of her incident with this one. There are shorter rope toys out there so you may want to explore those as an option. ... show more

Bought this rope after learning that playing tug of war was actually a beneficial type of play exercise for our herding dog. He loves rope. Unfortunately, he also destroyed this one pretty quickly. The price point is fair but I did also find a similar version of these at Target (the Boots & Barkley size M - Dog Rope Toy) for only $3.99 ea - which, honestly, is a better deal if your dog is a chewer. If Target doesn't have those in stock (I happened to nab the last 2 from my own last night), I would DEFINITELY repurchase this particular rope again! ... show more

The material (how they are woven) and the fact that they are not the soft fraying material, makes these a better choice for larger dogs who play heavy tug and actually chew (good for teeth) on them. Hold up great and knots never come loose.
