Description

The BG series ranges from ultralight freshwater actions to heavy big game saltwater models. With a strong black Anodized Machined Aluminum Housing and a solid faster in handle this reel is extremely rigid. The BG reels also feature an all-aluminum frame and features Digigear technology. Compared to most of the competition, the gears are between 20% to 40% larger. The gears also feature a larger tooth pattern, giving the gears a much longer gear life and durability than competitive reels. Tests reveal a gear life that is one to three times the length of competitive reels. Lightweight and incredibly strong, aluminium allows strength and weightlessness to be achieved without the cost and corrosion issues of other metals. Lighter, stronger and more balanced than any rotor system that’s come before, ‘Air Rotor’ delivers a great leap forward in rotor design and function and delivers the ultimate reel sensitivity and rotational balance. Daiwa’s Automatic Tournament Drag uses an improved drag grease that exhibits a low viscosity at rest, yet becomes more viscous immediately after drag start up. This reduces initial drag start-up inertia and combined with the structural changes of the ATD Drag System results in a smoother drag from the initial hook up. Daiwa’s first generation of digitally engineered gear design ensures a perfect mesh between ultra-tough drive gear and pinion gears for optimized speed, power, durability and smoothness.

  • Stealthy and powerful
Size: 6500
Daiwa never disappoints with quality. This reel isn't as high end as their usual but it still is one of the smoothest reels you can get for the price. Beginner friendly and worth it. Barely makes any noise too. Came greased and ready to use out the box.

  • Five-Year Surf Fishing Review
Size: 6500
I purchased this rod in the spring of 2020 for surf fishing with a 11' Okuma Cedros CSX surf rod Fishing Rod. I typically run a larger 8000 series with a heavier rod, but I wanted to lighten my "big" surf setup a little to add more cushion to my line. The Daiwa BG has held up to the surf and occasional submersion well. I do dunk my reels and spin them in fresh water after each visit, and I do the occasional internal inspection if I notice anything. The only modification I made to this reel was a ball handle as the factory grip was a rubber T-handle style which tends to cause a lot of lateral movement and fatigue when reeling. The rubber handles also typically get sticky when sun screen gets on them. Overall, the reel has held up as expected given the premium cost. The matte powder coat finish is one of the weaker parts of the reel. The finish doesn't hold up very well, and is rather susceptible to abrading. You can see this in the photos attached. The bail frame also scuffs pretty easily. Lastly, this reel has a tendency for braided line to bunch up on the spool. I've not experienced this from my other large spinning reels, even though the reel was lined with high tension and a proper spool knot to prevent slippage. I line this reel with 50lb braided. As for the function, it reels smooth, casts are good, and the drag is probably the best I've experienced. I've had a couple 80-120lb sharks, as well as a handful of jacks that took the clutches for quite a ride, and they are still working fine. It's trustworthy for the big boys ... show more

  • Great reel for the money
Size: 6500
I put the 6500 size on a 12 foot diawa surf rod and it pairs perfectly. I used about 75yds 20lb mono backing, then 450yards of 50lb power pro spectra braid, then a 12 yard shock leader. I tied the backing and leader to the braid with FG knots, since the leader knot has to cast through the guides. Great long casts, good drag power at 33lbs. Manual bail flip took some getting used to, but that is the way you are supposed to do it anyway. Very pleased so far. Will update after using it more. This replaced a quantum Cabo 80 size and is vey similar in size, capacity, and drag. ... show more

  • Robust.
Size: 6500
The one I got is too big, my mistake. But it is robust and heavy. If you're the type of person who thinks "heavy=reliable" well you'd be right with this product. I feel I could club someone with this and still catch a fish with it. If it breaks or wears out or something like that I'll edit this review. But it seems unlikely that'll happen. I fully expect this reel to be a generational heirloom. ... show more

  • Impressed
Size: 6500
Outstanding reel. Have used on many deep sea trips and set it up on a jigging rod. Great reel for the money. Powerful and durable. It also handled quite a bit of #80 braid. I have caught about a hundred tuna from little 5 pound footballs to 35 pound big eyes, this reel handles without any issues. I don't think you can get a better reel for this price... Maybe not even for twice as much. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Tank
Size: 6500
I gave it 2 stars for the lightweight category because this thing is not built to be light, it is built very good and is very durable. I have only used it once so far and caught a 33" redfish and a 28" black drum. I had to turn down the drag for the redfish because I wanted to tire him out before bringing him. As you know if you have done your research it has 33ib drag, I bought this to pull up grouper but have yet to do so, only thing I would be worried about when it comes to grouper is the gear ratio but I have this paired to an ugly stick tiger elite jigging rod 6'6. So far so good, do not expect this reel to fail anytime soon ... show more

  • Tough and smooth
Size: 6500
I use this with 65lb braid for halibut and salmon. Smooth. Tough. Feels substantial. Nice. I bought another.
