  • So good i can't go back to rounds.
Size: Long Scale Style: Light, 45-100
I bought these as an experiment to see what flats were like for my American Jazz bass. I went with D'Addario, because its what i know and I've used them for 35 years for Guitars and basses. The strings took a little getting used to, and i wasn't completely sold at first. But then- after about five months, the TONE became AWESOME. Smooth, silky, right there when you need it. And no scratching. Its hard to describe, but you will notice. I use fingers style for almost everything, so I haven't' had a need to use a pick. But that being said, I can't see why it wouldn't work with a pick. Also, its hard to go back to rounds now. The scratching just isn't there for flats. I just bought a new American P bass, and it came with rounds. I just don't like the round sound anymore, so i ordered another set for the new bass. Also to note, these 100-45 flats replaced my 105-45 rounds perfectly. They are stiffer, so you will need to adjust the action a tad. -Good luck! ... show more

  • Perfect fit
Size: Medium Scale Style: Light, 45-100
These strings are a perfect fit on my Fender Kingman V2 acoustic bass. (Intermediate scale) I chose them to replace the squeaky round wounds it came with. Very smooth playing, easy on the fingers, QUIET and they hold their tuning. I was a little concerned they might sound too dull but while not a zingy as the round wounds they have a nice bright sound and a fuller, rounder tone overall. I highly recommend. ... show more

  • Old School Thump, New School Brightness
Size: Long Scale Style: Light, 45-132 (5-String)
Been playing for a long time and I am in a band playing 60's through 80's music again. The roundwound strings I had been using just didn't seem to cut it for music from this period. Upper register notes just didn't have the authority necessary (strong mids) so I decided to go back to flatwounds. Did a lot of internet research and learned that the flatwound that appeared to me to be most respected by other bassists is the D'Addario XL Chromes. I'm here to say, these are the real deal and I think, through my bass's active tone controls, they have all the highs and lows I'll ever need for any kind of music. On one flatwound set I tried before (I won't mention the name), and on some roundwound sets, the B string was too hot compared to the other strings but with this set the string-to-string balance is excellent and, most importantly, my upper register notes have plenty of mid to cut through the mix and still sound like they came from a bass. Pictured is my lovely Pedulla Rapture RBJ2-5 with a set of D'Addario XL Chromes ECB81-5, the lightest gauge set of Chromes. And for you fellow Rapture owners, the B string was a tiny bit tight but fit in the bridge without modification. I was a bit worried at first because I like keeping this bass in original condition. I have a very light piece of foam at the bridge to eliminate unwanted harmonics and add a little Jamerson thump, and yes, these strings do harmonics well. Some flatwound sets do not. I am very happy with this set of strings. Oh, I need to add that my band plays tuned down one-half step. These strings handle that tuning exceptionally well at extremely low string height. The strings are a bit more taught than the roundwounds I previously had on this bass but not so much I cannot bend them easily. After setup (neck adjustment, string height and intonation) there is almost zero fret noise. I like that. These are great strings! ... show more

  • I have these on 4 basses now
Size: Long Scale Style: Light, 45-100
I like these so much, I put them on almost all of my basses. It's mostly about the feel, but I do not mind the tone either. I do slap at times and don't think I have lost much with these. They just feel too good. I keep meaning to try some Thomastik-Infeld flats, but these are much cheaper.

  • Great strings!
Size: Long Scale Style: Light, 45-100
I had played some basses with flat wounds but didn’t know much about them so read some reviews and decided on these and dropped down a gauge as suggested going from round wound to flat med light, put these on a Fender J and love them they stretch in real quick and stay in tune and I can practice longer with less finger fatigue ... show more

  • D'Addario Perfection
Size: Long Scale Style: Light, 45-132 (5-String)
In 2001 I needed a set of strings for a gig and the music store all I had. Was these in stock and I've been using them ever since. They're easy on their fingers. They sound fantastic and have been my choice of strings for over 20 years. I recommend these.

  • Second time around...Corporate Chromes are still badass, indeed.
Size: Long Scale Style: Medium, 50-105
I've pretty much tried them all: Pyramids, LaBella Deep Talkin', Ernie Ball, Thomastik-Infeld, various tape wounds, and I have to say the "corporate Chromes" are actually incredible quality through a host of playing scenarios. Their ubiquity of course annoys me, but it must be said that they live up to the hype for most of us who've been playing for a while (20 years gigging and recording). I'd say capable of a great vintage sound for sure, but maintaining a punchy, warm clarity. My theory is get all the tone out of the instrument possible, then use EQs and compressors, etc., to find your balance, be it live or during a recording. I don't know about lighter tension versions, but the mediums are right in the sweet spot for me. I dig in a little bit at times, but you can play softer with these as well. Quick note: TIs are indeed rad sounding, but the G is too thin and tension overall too floppy for my taste after a year with them. Chromes feel like you are playing bass and not electric guitar, while still being able to do fast runs if the action is set correctly. They're quite evenly tensioned with very relative string sizings and sound like butter after about three to four months when the zing wears off. Some like the zing as you'll note in the comments here, but if you want a bass to sound like a bass and produce that deep, clean, mellow flat wound tone, they absolutely fit the bill for the long haul. ... show more

I've been playing with these strings for 3 years now. Not a single issue. They are just as good as they were the day I got them.
