  • Way better than Elixirs
Size: Extra Light, 10-47 Style: 1-Pack
When it comes to coated strings, I choose D'Addario for their construction. The metal is coated, THEN wound, unlike competitors, which are wound, then coated. Not many players do enough research to know this. This means the coating won't flake off. Ever. This type of construction also allows for a little bit of natural squeak you get from non-coated strings. They don't sound coated. I rehearse/practice 2-3 times a week, perform every week for church, and play solo gigs about once a month. I usually change my strings every 6 months. ... show more

  • My new go-to strings
Size: Medium, 13-56 Style: 3-Pack
So glad I tried these strings. I find them to be superior to Elixir's in a number of ways: 1) They are not as bright/tinny sounding, and sound great right off the bat when strung - even better after they settle for a couple days. I even tried the Elixir's that are supposed to be "dark" sounding, and found they were too bright. These EXPs are my Goldilocks strings, not too bright, not too mellow just right! 2) I also find that they are more comfortable to play than any other strings I've used, and I have used them all. I think it's a combination of the particular tension of these and the fact that D'Addario coats the strings before winding them, maybe their hyped NY Steel too - these just feel better than anything I've played. I have these on all my dreadnoughts - Martin, Yamaha, Alvarez, and they sound good whether strumming or fingerpicking. Everyone is different, and it takes some time to find the right strings for a particular guitar/player/sound, but for me this was well worth the cost to give them a try. I recommend you do too. ... show more

  • My search is over!
Size: Light, 12-53 Style: 1-Pack
This opinion is based on my small body guitars, a Gibson LG-3 and Eastman E15-SS, w/ Adirondack top, Rosewood back/sides and a 24-3/4" scale lengths.. I flatpick, fingerstyle and light strum on these without any issues. My usual strings are D'Addario EJ16, But I don't like the way they sound at first. Too bright, then perfect after a few days of playing them in.This is the string I settled on after bouncing around from Martin, Elixir, Ernie Ball etc.... Basically, I've been searching for a couple years for strings that match this guitar and I'v finally found them. These EXP16, are amazing right out of the pack. The strings are easier on my fingers and the squeaking from slides is less pronounced. The only thing I'd note, is that they are a little sticky when bending, but it's not a deal breaker. Again, I can't believe how loud and clear my little guitar is with these on it. I love this (Eastman) guitar a lot, and this made me appreciate just what a special guitar it is. I mean, this thing is already a little boom box, but with these strings it got even louder and clearer. I could't imagine getting a better sound than what I've got going with these strings. We'll have to wait and see how long they last, but if my experience with this manufacturer is any indicator, I won't be disappointed. ... show more

  • Good initial sound that lasts 4X longer than non-coated 80/20 phosphor bronze
Size: Extra Light, 10-47 Style: 1-Pack
UPDATE: Lasts at least 4X longer than non-coated for me. I average at least 5 hours of play per week on this guitar. Pleasantly surprised how long they last while maintaining a tone nearly identical to when they are freshly installed. To split hairs -- The tone isn't quite as bright as the non-coated version but continue to produce the same tone for weeks. My style of play is neither heavy or light, with fingers and plectrum (pick). I keep my hands and guitar clean. My action is neither especially low or at flat-picking height but rather standard for greater flexibility and dynamic tone. Sounds very good on a Takamine jumbo. This is my first try of the D'Addario EXP15's. I have been using the non-coated 80/20 phosphor bronze for a few years now. Also sound very goon on a Seagull folk/parlor guitar made with all cedar body. ... show more

  • Fantastic for Maple Acoustics
Size: Custom Light, 11-52 Style: 1-Pack
My Tacoma DF-21SB is my constant companion. It's a rare bird, being composed of Curly Maple back and sides, paired with a Sitka Spruce top. I've tried all manner of strings, and some agree with this combination of woods more than others. Maple, intrinsically a bright and snappy wood, can be notoriously difficult to pair with strings. D'Addario EXPs are perfect. Previously I have tried coated/non-coated strings from Elixer, DR, and Ernie Ball, but I could never achieve the tonal response I was after. Elixers could come close, but I didn't like the texture, and noticed too much of a dampening effect. Meanwhile non-coated Earthwoods were overly bright and thin. D'Addario EXPs are the "Goldie Locks" strings I've been looking for: "Just right." They feel good, seem to outlast other coated strings, and don't suffer from the associated trade offs coated strings are known for (dampened tone. plastic/artificial feel, flaking, etc.). On the contrary, D'Addario EXP strings feel damn near like uncoated strings. In fact, I'm unable to discern a perceptible difference. They feel great, they sound great, and they last long enough to justify the slightly higher price premium. Well done D'Addario. ... show more

  • Ex-Elixir Addict
Size: Light, 12-53 Style: 1-Pack
Been playing guitar for 5 decades, 4 of them professionally. Back in the day my go-to string was D'Addario phosphor bronze. I went through well over 100 sets of them while gigging in Europe for almost two years way back in the 80's. I played hard, and a set lasted an average of 3 gigs. In the 90's I left my caveman style behind and started playing sessions and kept with D'Addario PBs , changing strings every two sessions. Then I was turned on to Elixir strings and was a loyal user for more than a decade, enamored with their longevity-to-price ratio. Due to Elixir's constant price increases over the years I tried a set of EXPs. I haven't done a longevity comparison , but they seem to last plenty long and more importantly I like the feel and sound. Oh, and the price. Oh, and they are made in the USA! ... show more
