  • Great Deal as a Zoneminder Server
Style: Intel Core i7-4770 | No Optical
I recently purchased a used, reconditioned Dell Optiplex 9020 Small Form Factor Desktop with Intel Core i7-4770 from Amazon. The reconditioning took place in a plant in Canada. I am very pleased with the performance of this computer and the ease of setup. I chose this system from Amazon after comparing it with other refurbishers because of Prime shipping. I had been running Zoneminder on a Raspberry Pi 4 to process the video from 4 cameras and store the footage on a 6 TB external Hard drive. That system struggled and I finally decided to upgrade. The newest Raspberry Pi seemed expensive, so I decided to look at used Intel boxes. I found this system on Amazon for less than the cost of a Pi and with a free keyboard and mouse. Seemed a great bargain. When the system arrived, it had Windows 10 Pro installed. I did not want to destroy that. I was able to shrink the partition on the 1 TB hard drive and install Debian as a dual boot operating system. The process was made easier by the fact that the drive came formatted using the GUID partition table (GPT). I installed Grub to manage the boot process, which was a breeze after I figured out that I needed to change the BIOS boot process from Legacy mode. I was able to connect the same external hard drive that I had used with the Pi to one of the USB 3 ports and it mounted without fuss under Debian. The system comes with both HDMI and Display Port video but sans cables. I had a spare Display Port on my monitor, so I bought a cable (one-day delivery) from Amazon, and I was up and running. After initial configuration I mostly log into the system with Putty, so I hardly use the monitor. But I did want sound capability. I purchased a cheap USB speaker, and it works great. My total investment was still less than the Pi and it runs circles around it. Rather than use the USB mouse that came with my purchase, I used the built-in Bluetooth to connect my Logitech MX master. Once again, no problems whatsoever, one less cable to mess with. I am using both the WiFi card, built-in and the 1GB ethernet port. The drivers for Debian installed by default for both. I didn’t have to hunt for anything, plug-and-play! I love the size of this thing. You can see it in my picture beside my full-size desktop system. The external Hard Drive (purchased separately) is sitting on top of it. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend this product to anyone looking for a reliable and affordable computer that is easy to install Debian Unix on. ... show more

  • Beware they do not refurbish or install new OS, I got Walmart locked portal was never tested
Style: Intel Core i7-4770 | No Optical
This was a terrible experience because I invested far more time getting no where than the computer cost. My 95 yo mom needed a replacement computer to surf web. send emails, watch youtube, this claimed "refurbished" unit claimed to have a "fresh" Win 10 Pro install. 1) The computer did not have any documentation or paper work in box. 2) I kept getting walmart page asking for my walmart employee email or security code. 3) I typed in the various service codes on back the Dell with no success. 4) I bought a 3 year warranty from Asurion. I spent a lot of time with 3 different techs trying to do a master reset. One Asurion tech told me to buy USB flash drives over 16 Gig I did and the other two techs stated they did not know why I needed those USB drives, I told them they were going to help me download some updated win 10 pro software according to them, the next 2 techs said that's not true it can't happen they don't have that capability. 5) Asurion forwarded my call to Dell. Dell told me I need to buy a service agreement from them so i hung up and called Asurion back. 6) USTecno was the seller and Hitech Bay Inc, Scarborough Ontario claimed to have refurbished it and shipped it. I called these people a number of times and kept getting hung up on so I went to website and sent message. I never heard back from them. 7) I called Back Asurion, the tech told me it means Walmart had locked out the ability to reset software and obviously the refurbisher never updated software like advertised or tested it. Basically junk from Walmart that was unusable was shipped to Hitech, they didn't do anything and shipped the junk to me. 8) I have to send the junk back now. 9) I have an enormous amount of time and frustration with this experience, the lies, the hassle, no service. 9) Amazon was great in giving me a refund! 10) Bad experience all the way around, I guess I should have known better. ... show more

  • I bought 3 at once. No issues at all.
Style: Intel Core i7-4770 | No Optical
Listen, it’s a computer. Stuff happens. I bought 3 of these, and one new dell as a server that cost more than the 3 of these combined. Guess which unit didn’t POST and I had to replace? The new dell. So far all 3 booted up and are running just fine. I opened one up and used the second hdd port to clone a hard drive, no issues at all. Windows 10 pro is licensed and fine. The only issue I had is the display port to HDMI adapter didn’t work. I bought these because all of my monitors have VGA and am using those. I wouldn’t use the adapter. Computers break, parts fail, etc. it’s the name of the game. I use mine with the Ethernet cable. The WiFi adapter is a dongle, 2,4g only and slow so just know if you want fast wifi buy a wifi card and install it or run a cable to the machine. For $230 it’s hard to beat. The ssd isn’t name brand but it works and speeds the machine up. I replaced one with a 1tb cloned WD blue to test the machine and it did run slower. The likelihood of a component breaking is random. I have a 10 computer network in my office that is on 24/7/365. This is joining those so we will see. These are old, but newer than most of my machines. They are old commercial machines, optiplex. I see from some bad reviews that it’s luck of the draw. Guess I got lucky 3x. ... show more
