  • Amazing Knife Set
Style: Bodo
The customer service on this set is fantastic. The knives themselves are incredible as well. Some knives have wooden handles which are basically an indicator that the knives days are significantly limited, however these are solid metal from base to tip, so they get the job done so much better. Overall with the great customer service and the knife set being as efficient as it is + the cutting board? It's a fantastic option in my opinion. Definitely would recommend these. ... show more

  • Made in China; decent for the price.
Style: Kin
This knife set is a decent value but it is by no means a great set of knives. For that you'll need to buy a more substantial set by, say, Wusthof or Global. The set includes two santoku blades which is a bit odd for this Western kitchen but they do cut fairly well if you like that style of blade. The "block" is meant to display the set in a modern, flashy style but I find its base width makes it prone to tipping and I have to put the stand out of reach of my moving quickly to cook and cut, making this form over function styling w/out much purpose if I can only display the set in an area far from my hands and arms. The knives are sharp and they are easily sharpened with a whetstone, my preferred method. The blades have a very lightly etched pattern which is attractive and adds nothing to the cutting ability of the knives. Cuisine::pro has gone to great lengths to advertise this set as made of Japanese steel and everywhere in the included literature Japan is prominently implied to be the country of manufacture. These are made in China, as you might expect. Whether the steel is necessarily better at slicing, I cannot really say. My Global set (made in Japan) is one of the best and have a slightly thicker spine, making separating what I'm cutting an easier task. I also prefer how the handles are shaped. The handles could be slightly longer and these knives are fairly lightweight so on the plus side, they move quickly and easily through their tasks. On the other hand, their lack of weight is a negative if you're used to relying on the weight of a knife to help direct cutting. That all depends upon your style and preference. For myself, I wish they were slightly heavier. The shape and angles of the blades are pretty standard and the chef's knife (the one I use most) does the job although I prefer a blade that rocks on the board rather than this one that tends to hit the board with a relatively horizontal cutting edge. Again, it's all in what you're used to using. For the price, this is a decent set of knives that goes out of its way to promote its supposedly Japanese heritage. Misleading at best. For the money, I think these are OK but I would spend a bit more and get a really high-quality German or Japanese or American set of knives as this set isn't really inexpensive. These are better than the sets you'll find at TJMaxx but not the gourmet's blades, not by a long shot. ... show more
