  • Does the Job I Bought It For
Style: Bypass Hand Pruner
I was looking for a hand pruner with a maximum cut beyond the typical 3/8” or 3/4". After doing online research, I found Corona offered several models. I was familiar with the Corona brand and its reputation (I already own Corona Micro Snips—very sharp, very precision cut). From Amazon, I bought the Corona BP7100 DualCut Branch and Stem Pruner, which has a maximum cut of up to 1”. The DualCut offers what Corona calls Precision and Power Zones—precision for smaller cuts and power for the thick stuff. Corona accomplishes this with what it calls a “notched hook” design. I’m not quite sure what that means, but I think it may be related to what caused me a problem right out of the packaging. Before taking the pruners out of the packaging, I noted what looked like a ding or burr on the blade edge in the middle of the blade. I took a photo with the pruner in the package, which I have included with my review (note: the blade is protected by a clear plastic window, which makes it hard to see the ding). Is this supposed to be the “notched hook”? After taking the pruner out of the package, I found I could not close the blade past the bypass anvil. Before I could use the pruners, I had to file down the ding (I bought the Corona sharpener, too, and resharpened the blade). That can’t be right. It must have been a defect. A purchasing feature for me was the Max Forged steel chassis and handles. For a good strong tool, especially a tool like this, forged steel is best. But it also introduces another problem: it can rust easily. After my first use, I sprayed and wiped down the blades and upper chassis with WD40. I put the pruner in the drawer of my toolbox in my garage. The next day when I went to use the pruner, I discovered some surface oxidation and pitting (must have been the humidity in my garage). I cleaned it up with some light steel wool and WD40. Now I keep them inside. I think the steel parts may need some type of coating applied by Corona. It’s because of these two things that I gave the pruner only a 4-star rating, instead of 5 stars. So, how do they work? They’re excellent and have no problem cutting through the thick stuff. The only issue I have with cutting is that sometimes the shrub leaves get caught between the blade’s backside and anvil, which causes the blade to jam. Other things I like are the enclosed spring, the handle bumpers and the soft grips, which don’t slip or move/twist on the handles. Others have complained about the locking mechanism. I’m OK with it. I discovered it can be tightened with a 2.5mm hex wrench to keep it from moving around. Also, if you push the bottom end of the lock handle into the groove, it will keep the blade open, which is handy for sharpening. Would I recommend this pruner and buy it again? Yes. ... show more

  • Great pruner shears. Lock lever could be better. I'd buy again!
Style: Bypass Hand Pruner
I wanted to really put these corona pruner shears to the test before I sat down to write a review. I was able to do that today. I was using this in the woods of Southeast Louisiana and mainly cutting climbing tree vines and china ball tree branches. The ergonomics are good and the handles were comfortable. I had no issues cutting green vines and branches that were far bigger in diameter than what these shears should be expected to cut. The blades were very sharp and the alignment was good. I had no problems cutting any green branches or vines I used them on. I definitely cut a few branches and vines that were 11/4" thick and while I had to use 2 hands and put a little muscle into it, it cut right through them. The pruner itself was very good and I have no complaints about it. The lock can be a little stiff to operate, and while I wasn't going to remove a star for it, I did only because someone who might be operating the lock mulltiple times a day might find it a bit frustrating. For home use where this is not the case, I would leave it as 5 stars. The lock can be very tight and you have to pry on it sometimes to release it as opposed to flicking it open with your finger. Honestly even with one star removed for the finicky lock I would never hesitate to purchase these again. I am very satisfied with these shears and can recommend them. The steel will discolor and stain so I do recommend cleaning them with some wd-40 after cutting lots of green juicy branches and vines because it is tough on the steels in my experience of brush and trail clearing. I have paired this the corona AC7220 leather holding sheath, the corona pruning saw held in the Weaver arborist saw scabbard, and a longer handled loping shears and I can clear brush and trails like a beaver with these simple hand tools. Great tools for deer trail maintanence and cleaning up along the woods line where I live. ... show more

  • Corona "Dual Cut Bypass Pruner" versus the "Pro Bypass Pruner", BUYER BEWARE!
Style: Bypass Hand Pruner
The Corona BP 7100D Forged DualCUT Bypass Hand Pruner is awesome, I love it. However and the reason I only gave it a 4-star rating is that Corona Clipper is engaging in some deceptive marketing and here's how: I ordered both the Corona BP 7100D dual cut for $22.79 (as currently priced this date when I purchased them), and I also order for comparison the Corona BP 7200 Forged Pro Cut for $26.95. I received them both at the same time and GUESS WHAT, they are the exact same bypass pruner, just some different wording on the package for the "Pro", but the exact same pruner, and Corona is charging an additional $4.16 by simply calling one the "Pro" and the other the "Dual Cut". I consider that deceptive marketing! (see included picture of both versions, identical, but with different wording on the packaging) So if you are considering buying either of these good bypass pruners, save yourself the extra $4.16 and buy the Corona BP 7100D dual cut version. ... show more

  • Locking mechanism
Style: Bypass Hand Pruner
Good quality pruners. However, the locking mechanism is a pain. It engages to oiginal position while in use because when unlocked, the plastic mechanism can move about. It also engages to the opposite of locking and jams the pruners as well. Not happy with these from that standpoint. Also feel handle is a bit too small. While working I tend to have my hand ride up toward the blades and loose any leverage I had starting with my hand at the bottom of the pruners. I would definitely not buy another pair of these. ... show more

Style: Bypass Hand Pruner
I always buy Corona. This one is sharp. What i don't like is the lock doesn't work correctly to engage or un-engage with out force. The blades seem to be a bit bent to not make a clean slice. I may have received an unbalanced tool.
