The adjustable pitch Compass provides motorized awning comfort with Carefree's standards for looks, strength, and dependability with a successful blend of style, quality, and economy. The awning arms are made from lightweight, no- rust aluminum and includes motor. The Compass is retrofittable to both Carefree and competitive brands such as A&E by Dometic and Lippert Solera with 3.4" and 3.0" diameter roller tubes. It has the shortest mounting surface footprint with an 8' extension. Compass looks great on every RV from Class A motorhomes and 5th wheels, to smaller travel trailers and Class C. The Compass replaces the discontinued Carefree Longitude part number 87JVAPHW.

The arms were an exact match to the Carefree Traveler Awning that we damaged the arms on. Unfortunately Carefree quit making the motion sensor with the three buttons like is on our 2018 Newmar in 2020 or so. In talking with a Carefree technician, I discovered that the motion sensor is in the motor head, secured with double-sided tape. I removed it along with the “phone type” cord that runs down the arm to the coach, and installed it on the new arm. It works almost perfect. For some reason that I’ve yet to determine, the awning begins to retract after it finishes deploying. I stop it, extend it to full out and shut the power switch off for about 20 seconds. When I turn the power switch back on, the awning stays out. The three settings on the wind sensor switch work as before. They should since it’s the same motion sensor. Carefree wants to sell you their new switch and motion sensor. You can go that route. Or you can scarf the old motion sensor from your old motor head and easily install it in your new awning arm. It was relatively simple and straightforward to replace the awning arms on my coach because they were an exact match to the old ones. The only problem I ran into was that a few of the holes in my coach were stripped out because the mounting lag bolts are set into a thin fiberglass wall. So I had to drill and set some new bolts in existing holes in the metal arms. Don’t neglect to use silicone on all the bolt heads and under the awning arms against the coach where the bolts are located.

Used it to replace the Traveler arms, holes were not in the same spot, so I had to make a few adjustments. They look much more heavy duty than the original arms and the motor is much quieter. Thank you

First of all, when we received this it was missing the two bottom mounting brackets, the lock for one side was already broken, top piece to one of the arms was broken, no installation instructions, and it is NOT universal. It also arrived late. Being in a pickle and needing this right away my husband had a rig it to work, and we had to go to camp world to spend another $60 on the lower mounting brackets. Getting ahold of Carefree of CO was a NIGHTMARE. When you call them it’s extremely hard to get ahold of someone for one, and once you say you purchased on Amazon oh boy, they transfer you to their “Amazon guy” and he never answers the phone. I left 3 messages before getting a call back and by that time I had already gone to camp world to buy the lower mounting brackets. Now for the “universal fit” claim that they make. This is absolutely not universal. My husband had to drill out a portion of the top so that the canopy roller would attach. I understand this voids whatever warranty they claim to have but we had to do what we had to do. It’s pretty flimsy too so it’ll have to do until we can get a better set. If I could give this 0 stars I would. Do not waste your money or your time—carefree won’t make it right anyway.

The arms were pretty straightforward to replace. I would recommend 2 people minimum for the install. I had an extremely difficult time doing this by myself. Everything fit very well, except for the very top mounting area. My old arms had a single hole slightly larger than the bolt to hold it in place, but the new arms had a large space where the bolt hole should be. I had to cut a piece off of the old arm to make a "washer" to cover the large hole and hold the top of the rail to the camper. Other than that, it is made very well and performs excellent.

Replaced our old arms and motor with this one. Fairly straight-forward install but there were no instructions in the box. Some complained that the motor wires were too short and that would be the case if this were a first-time installation and not a replacement. Trailer manufacturers run a separate set of wires from the inside motor control to the outside of the trailer. The wire used to connect this motor is only long enough to get you inside the trailer but not some convenient place to mount the controller. The kit does include a switch and electrics for it but not enough wire for a brand new installation. We took off the old hardware leaving only the aluminum span attached to the awning itself (the round tube the awning rolls up on). Installed the arms, wired the motor using the existing wire coming from inside the trailer. Putting the old awning back on is a little tricker, you have to let the awning unroll a bit (or all the way) and lift it into place while collapsing the arms just a bit. That is a two-person job but it is not difficult with a pair of ladders. There may be a better way but it was quick for my teen-aged son and I- about 45min. Just don't try and do it outside if there is any breeze. The Motor is strong and quiet. It is nice having a working awning again after a microburst threw the last awning and arms up on top of the trailer!
