  • Sews through very thick leather
Style: 10-Bearings
This machine, as delivered, is not for the faint of heart. It is possible it will work out of the box. But most likely you will need to spend a great deal of time cleaning, polishing, rebuilding, adjusting, cursing, readjusting and repolishing a few times before it might sew correctly. Once you get everything just right, it will do a rather amazing job sewing very thick leather or other materials. I think this machine is best suited for budget-conscious, mechanically inclined masochists. It is satisfying once you get everything in order. There are a ton of YouTube videos explaining how to set it up and what to polish / grease. There are also Facebook groups that are incredibly helpful. I ended up making quite a few modifications and enhancements. In hindsight, I probably would have considered one of the other types that are about $350-ish and appear to be more finished. Just DO NOT buy this one thinking you'll be sewing leather Day One. It's possible. Just not likely. ... show more

  • Is the 10 bearing worth the additional cost?
Style: 10-Bearings
I ordered the 10 bearing machine. I believe the extra 2 bearings are added to ride in the cam wheel handle and widen the bearing contact surface. That would really make a difference if you intend to add an electric motor. The flywheel is grooved for a v-belt. That groove makes the bobbin winder pretty useless as the rubber wheel can't decide if it rides in the groove or on the outside rim. The package arrived intact, but a few pieces were loose inside the packing. The machine was covered in rust preventative and Styrofoam pieces just like everyone else stated. The machine had no rust on it. The included stand is not usable, so plan on mounting it to a base. You can see lots of ideas on YouTube. I mounted it to a base, oiled it, and turned the crank to use up some of the sample thread left over on the test piece supplied. It sewed. After cleaning it all up, I wound a bobbin by hand and set the machine up with the included nylon line. The machine sewed with no issues. Yes, the thread broke a couple times until the tension was right and there was a learning curve. There are lots of good videos to show how to get it working well. I'm not sure if the 10 bearing is worth the cost over the 8 bearing, but it does work. I would definitely buy the 8 bearing as a minimum. The standard machine is only 4 bearing and there is metal to metal contact that has to be lubricated often. So far, I really am happy with my purchase. I dropped it by one star for 2 reasons. 1) The poor bobbin winder function. 2) The second bobbin carrier supplied does not have a tension spring and is not useable. Other than that, it is a good value on a machine that works and will likely last a very long time. ... show more

  • Impressive machine, but be patient! Impressive machine, but be patient!
Style: 10-Bearings
I went with the 10 bearing model for the extra smoothness. Now that I've looked at the construction closer, I'm really happy with that decision. This will likely NOT work out of the box -- you will need a bit of patience and tuning to get it running smoothly. Some needle files, a magnet and some lube will help. You'll need to tidy it up after manufacturing and shipping, and then really file it to deburr so your thread doesn't snap or get caught on things -- they've done some of it but you will want to do more, and sometimes these will end up out of timing if knocked about in transit. Be PATIENT. It is worth it. The base as other reviews stated is not ok as is but most folk don't use it. I welded mine a bit and it works like a champ. This thing chomps through layers of leather with ease. The long arm and walking foot are fantastic and essential with what I was doing (fixing my motorcycle leathers -- impossible with a traditional machine). Stitch length and tension are easy to adjust once you know what to look for. It's impressive what you can do with these. YouTube videos and the Facebook group will help a ton, for setup and shooting. For the price, compared to a vintage or new one, you will be happy. Add a servo and foot pedal if you want to automate it! They can be had on here for another 20-30$. Overall love this thing. Customer service was also quick and responsive when I had an issue. Thank you! ... show more

  • No quality control
Style: 10-Bearings
I got my machine this week and waited until today (Saturday) to unbox it. Inside the box the machine was wrapped in plastic and coated in a light, though dark, oil which is what I expected, and everything that should have been in the box was there. So far so good. I've watched hours of YouTube videos, read dozens of posts in the Facebook group for these machines, I'm a blacksmith, shade-tree auto mechanic AND I have refurbished a couple sewing machines ... so I thought I was ready to set it up. The short version of my problems: - The pitman arm (which drives the bobbin housing) was practically seized in the raceway. It was bent AND had a bulge in it from where it was hit while it was hot. I had to grind out the bulge and all of the burrs along the gear teeth. - The shuttle bearer (hold the bobbin and the shuttle hook) was not square. That is, the side was not 90 degrees to the surface that the gear was welded to. When I moved the pitman arm the bearer would bind against the inside of the bobbin casement. Fortunately a little sanding was all that was needed. - The needle control arm was 5mm too long and it could not move past the bearing housing at the crank. I had to grind off the material to get clearance. FIVE millimeters!! - The needle control arm was twisted. When I finally got the crank to turn but the needle arm also scraped against the main body. I was able to fix that with a little filing along the area where it was rubbing. So why 1 star for a machine that I knew was going to need assembly/setup? This amount of setup and adjustment is beyond anything I've heard anyone else report (most folks would have stopped at the stuck pitman arm and sent it back). I shouldn't have to spend 4 hours fixing errors that should have been obvious of anyone had tried the machine at the factory - even giving the crank a single turn before removing the crank wheel for packing would have told them this machine was bad. I still don't have it sewing. I'm onto the usual adjustments and settings for thread tension and timing that most people have to do, but I ran out time for now. I'm really hoping I don't find any other problems. ... show more

  • Not exactly as advertised
Style: 10-Bearings
Not exactly as pictured, the legs do not have screws and so fall out when you try to move it. The "instructions" are poorly written and so you need to watch the video to figure out how to assemble it. the bobbin winder is a little finicky. it says to Oil it, but it is not obvious as to where to add oil. Also the thread has to go through a long tube and they give you a very thin piece of wire to help with that, but that wire is easy to bend. ... show more

  • It's a clean machine. It's a clean machine.
Style: 10-Bearings
Very pleased. After reading all the reviews and watching a dozen videos, I was expecting to spend the next week cleaning, polishing and adjusting the machine. However, when I unpacked the machine ,it was clean and in perfect working order. It came with a four page instruction manual, and accessories included needles, a spool of monofilament thread, extra bobbins and a shuttle. The crank is already slotted to adapt to my servo motor from an old machine. I have now only to design and build a stand to make it portable. I look forward to using it in my leatherwork. ... show more

  • Awesome steam-punk cobbler machine!! Awesome steam-punk cobbler machine!!
Style: 10-Bearings
Worked right out of the box. This machine is sick. For under $150 i have a cobblers machine capable of sewing multiple layers of leather and being able to get in the toe of any shoe. Anyone looking at a cobblers machine should appreciate this. Yes, it is literally rough around the edges. Yes, lack of a stand that will work as is longer than a day saved me $100. Yes, with the machine you can sew webbing tension support for the base, in that first day. See pics. Already repaired some high end merino wool shoes that were losing stiches. Not possible without this hot hunk of metal. ... show more

  • WORTH THE TIME
Style: 10-Bearings
This is NOT a plug and play machine, if you don't mind doing some TLC this is for you. Its about $100 so what do you expect to get... I spent around 5-10 hours fine tuning the machine, fabricating a base for the machine, griding and polishing rough surfaces for smother operation, and tinkering with the tension. All said and done this is a very cost effective machine if you are a leather hobbyist, most of the name brand machines are over 10x the price. There are plenty of YT vids on this machine so you will have plenty of resources to troubleshoot it. If you don't have half a brain this isn't for you. ... show more
