  • It is what it is, with some effort it sews fine.
Style: 10-Bearings
Out of the box this bad boy was ROUGH! Yes it would sew as it was delivered. Edges of some components could and did cut me if not handled carefully. Edges were not radiused, scale was present, back of hand crank wheel was really rough from machining. The arms that drive the needle, and the walking foot were contacting the frame of machine. I took the machine apart, did a lot of filing, some gentle bending, added washers as spacers where needed, smoothed and polished all things concerning the bobbin and bobbin shuttle. Took everything apart concerning the walking foot and filed and polished…. To make all movement smooth and easy no matter which direction I sew. The bobbin winder is the jokester, you may well need to replace original equipment provided. I I used one salvaged from an old treadle machine. I also mounted my machine on a treadle machine base. It is now foot powered allowing both hands to mind that which is being worked. It sews really nice now. Also squared up the ring of arm that drives the walking foot. Out of box it was not square resulting in a change of stitch length that varied with the direction being sewed. I would suggest purchasing extra feet and bobbins. The foot is aggressive, I needed a less aggressive foot and a no mark foot. Purchased additional feet and modified to suite my needs. For the money and effort I’ve put into the machine I’d do it again as it meets my needs. Might fox a boot, might fix livestock stuff, currently making a custom tent for my truck and some heavy duty bags for gear. Oh suggest replacement of the super cheap handle provided with machine. Currently modifying machine for motor drive when desired. ... show more

  • Is the 10 bearing worth the additional cost?
Style: 10-Bearings
I ordered the 10 bearing machine. I believe the extra 2 bearings are added to ride in the cam wheel handle and widen the bearing contact surface. That would really make a difference if you intend to add an electric motor. The flywheel is grooved for a v-belt. That groove makes the bobbin winder pretty useless as the rubber wheel can't decide if it rides in the groove or on the outside rim. The package arrived intact, but a few pieces were loose inside the packing. The machine was covered in rust preventative and Styrofoam pieces just like everyone else stated. The machine had no rust on it. The included stand is not usable, so plan on mounting it to a base. You can see lots of ideas on YouTube. I mounted it to a base, oiled it, and turned the crank to use up some of the sample thread left over on the test piece supplied. It sewed. After cleaning it all up, I wound a bobbin by hand and set the machine up with the included nylon line. The machine sewed with no issues. Yes, the thread broke a couple times until the tension was right and there was a learning curve. There are lots of good videos to show how to get it working well. I'm not sure if the 10 bearing is worth the cost over the 8 bearing, but it does work. I would definitely buy the 8 bearing as a minimum. The standard machine is only 4 bearing and there is metal to metal contact that has to be lubricated often. So far, I really am happy with my purchase. I dropped it by one star for 2 reasons. 1) The poor bobbin winder function. 2) The second bobbin carrier supplied does not have a tension spring and is not useable. Other than that, it is a good value on a machine that works and will likely last a very long time. ... show more

  • It works but requires effort and patience
Style: 10-Bearings
I am a total beginner to machine sewing. I saw all the reviews that said this machine was hard to put together but took a chance anyway. It is not hard to put together. It is together right out of the box. You just have to put on the fly wheel and put it on a base. If you don’t want to use the base it comes with you can make one. I made one with a 18x6x1.5 board, hammered a 7x7x1 board on top of that and bolted the machine to it. Then I clamped it to my desk. I painted the boards too for fun. I cleaned all the grease off the machine that it comes protected in during shipment, and I watched a few short videos on YouTube from Flexitool sewing, which has step by step directions on exactly how to use this machine. Check out Flexitool.net. Check out Mainely Acres too on YouTube for detailed videos. My husband was amazed I set up my own machine within a couple hours without his help. If you are use to putting toys or children’s furniture together, or are into crafts, you likely have enough skill and patience to handle this. If you want perfection out of the box, and don’t like to tinker, this is not for you. But colouredpeas, does have a lot of good photos too and instructions came in English. Make sure to get sewing needles that have a flat side to them. You can get flat needles from Bantamsaddletack.com. Right now I am using 69 nylon bonded thread with an 18 needle and am sewing 3-4 and 4-5 ounce leather. Check on YouTube for the specific needle thread combinations you will need for heavier leather. I give it three stars since the presser foot makes lots of marks on the leather, but the foot can be sanded or ground down some. After a year of tinkering with this I bought the more expensive machine and ditched this. This requires a lot of effort to keep it running well, but I learned a lot with it. There are also groups on Facebook that can give you info or help. ... show more
