As someone just getting into some wood working it can be overwhelming to think about the different tools and equipment you need to do things. I can't buy rough milled lumber and save money because I don't gave a planer. A good piece of advice is buy things like router bits as you need them and don't get the cheapest thing. This surfacing bit is large enough to cut down on time, well made to do a pretty clean job, and thoughtful enough to be able to rotate the cutting blades for extended life. My first few times using this have been excellent. It cuts clean, smooth and flat lines allowing me to get the job done that a planer and joiner could do. Yes, those other tools would be faster but since I already have a router, a simple sled allowed me to get 2 flat surfaces that needed nothing more than finish sanding. I've used this to reduce thickness of boards and take out some errant marks made from milling. Extra screws are nice especially because they're likely a specific size to hold the cutting blades. The 1/2" shank keeps everything secure and tends to heat up less than 1/4" This should be good for all wood types and I'm sure it will work for soft metals like aluminum or brass without destroying the blades. I am very happy with the purchase.

Built a gian 22x22x6" chopping block made of white oak, and needed a way to flatten it. It was too tall for my CNC, so I used a router sled and this chonk of a flattening bit. Having flattened on a CNC with a wee 1/2" bit, I started this taking a tiny amount and overlapping by half. After a few minutes, I noticed I was getting dust, not chips. Rather than size the board in tiny steps, I lowered the bit a couple of mm to try again. I was paying attention to make sure the router didn't get bogged down, the board didn't move, and that my lines looked clean. This thing just CHEWED through the endgrain and left me with a super flat surface with no burnout whatsoever. Sanding from this point was so easy with such a smooth surface. If you're on the fence, get off the fence and buy the thing. It's a chonk, seems like it's a great quality, and the price is right as well.

Exactly as expected given the price. For light use this is a great tool if used properly. The build quality isn't great and the included tool was a loose fit but it still retains its functionality. Where this review differs is in an unexpected use. In the market of high speed hobby type cnc routers such as the X-carve by inventables, there are few tools for cutting aluminum successfully (let alone facing operations). The closest tool available for facing aluminum on a high speed spindle off the shelf would be the Datron stepped two flute cutter which is upwards of $100. With a few slight and easy modifications this tool can mimic the job done by real face or fly cutters that are 4 times its price in aluminum. This absolutely should not be done without proper consideration for personal safety but the lack of literature on the subject is reason enough for me to point out this possibility. I would have no problem using this as intended in woods and manufactured wood products like mdf. *A couple safety precautions for this kind of tool* 1. Acquire and use personal protective equipment ie. safety glasses and/or an enclosure on a hobby cnc 2. Before each use check both insert mounting bolts for tightness and ensure both inserts are firmly held into their recess. This eliminates the issue of loosening inserts mid op.

I use this along with several others for making live edge tables etc including my own twist on poured epoxy live edge table. Overall this works very well for me. The key is to rotate the cutting edges as soon as you even think they may be dulling. If not you will get tear outs especially any figured hardwood. The replacement blades are cheap enough why struggle with a "mostly" sharp bit. The bit is well balanced and I get no vibration even closing in on 18000 RPM. Now my Freud flat cutting bit has a slight vibration which it had from the start. It was my first bit I used for slab flattening and while it cuts fine the vibration, though slight, causes issues when final flattening after pouring epoxy. However this bit is very smooth. Now sometimes when I am flattening out a pour I will resort to s smaller diameter bowl bit since it tends to not get those little nicks in epoxy that a flat bit can. So overall I like it...is the better...I am sure there is but not sure what or how much better it can get. Make sure if you are flattening a slab that your router is actually parallel to the surface and you should get clean cuts. i built my sled and i incorporated the ability to level the sled side to side to avoid getting any dishing or ridges in the cuts. I bias it just every so slightly to leave a faint rise between cuts because if it dips just a tad on the outcut it will tear and thats not easily sanded out unlike a very faint faint ridge

I will be honest, this was my first wood cutting bits with inserts. I thought it would be more economical as the Chinese surfacing bits with brazed carbide cutting tips didn't last long when cutting hard woods but now I am not so sure. I thought I'd take light cuts (.25 mm) to get the feel of the new bit but the tool chattered and gouged the workpiece. I thought maybe I needed to take deeper cuts so I tried taking a 1 mm cut on a piece of dark cherry. Not but a few minutes into the cut on my 3018 CNC router the tool chattered so bad it knocked my dust boot off, shattering it and sending pieces sailing across the room. Since losing my dust boot I have not used my router or this bit so I can't say much other than I wished I'd purchased a half dozen 1 inch surfacing bits from China instead of this bit with interchangeable inserts. Bad thing was I bought a box of inserts when I bought the bit. If I happen to find out I was not using his bit correctly in will update this review. As a retired machinist I am very familiar with metal cutters with replaceable inserts and thought I wouldn't have any problems. I ran the tool at high rpm and a low feed rate, maybe someone can tell me if I am doing something wrong? After upgrading to an 800w spindle motor the but no longer chatters and leaves a good surface finish so I raised my review from 3 to 5 stars.

Awesome little bit. I bought this to flatten a 98"x25" black walnut slab. I paired with a market place Ryobi router and cheap plastic sled. Worked great, even when taking off 1/4" at a time!
