This is a pretty nice item for the price. It’s made of thick, painted particle board (not plastic) and takes about 15 minutes to put together. You just align the holes and screw in a total of 8 screws. You’ll need a Phillips-head screwdriver & a hammer (to firmly attach decorative caps to the screws). Not rocket science at all. The item does come with brackets for affixing it to a wall for greater stability. I didn’t find that necessary to do; I put 2 units side-by-side in our entryway and the shelves are heavy enough that they don’t tip over easily If you have very young children and are worried about them tipping it over, you’d want to take that extra step & mount these to the wall, particularly if you’re stacking 2 or more units. (Each unit has 2 shelves and is less than 18” off the ground.) In terms of shoe storage capacity, our family has shoe sizes ranging from a youth 2 to a men’s 10. Each of these units holds 9 pairs of kid’s/women’s shoes or 6 pairs of men’s shoes. Overall, these are a nice addition to our home. I bought the larger ones many years back to solve the issue of my shoes taking over my closet - I think my shoes multiply when I am sleeping. : ) They lasted – and still look great after all these years. This time around I bought the shorter ones - this way - between the larger ones and these smaller ones side by side in my closet - I still had room in my closet for a section for my dresses to hang down to the floor too. Plus all my shoes are pretty tidy at this point too. Pretty easy to put together - although you have to use a bit of muscle to get the screws in tight with a manual scredriver. They also have a bit of weight to them as well – which I think is a good thing. My older ones have never sagged and the particle board is quite thick and sturdy. (One guy's review said he was disappointed when it broke when his friend sat on it - and another review warned not to let your children stand or play on these... I have no idea what some people are using these for - but they are MADE FOR STORAGE OF YOUR SHOES!?!?!? Oh - and another reviewer also exclaimed surprise that the box did not include a hammer and screwdriver – seriously? I guess his butler must have been off that day. : ) Some reviews here complain that the back of the finished product is not actually finished - just pressed board showing. I don't understand this complaint at all. If you have them in the closet against the wall - you can not see the backs at all. Even if you have them out in an open room - I would assume they will still be against a wall - so what is the problem? The only problem I have – as being a woman with high heels as well as flats – most heeled shoes – especially higher ones will not fit in the slots. Flats, sneakers, most sandals – great. Even for lower heals or maybe higher heels but in a sling back style or something – again no issue. For the higher heeled sturdier shoe – they just won’t fit. I wish they would make one “for the women” – it would be very helpful. Seriously – one that may be a bit higher just for the women would be GREAT! For now – my highest heels either sit on the closet floor next to the shelves – or I put them on the top of the units once stacked. Still a great product. This organizer is so much more useful than I expected. I have been using it as a shoe rack, but it works just as well as a book rack or really anything you need it to be. The dark cherry finish looks really nice and gives it a clean solid look that fits in anywhere around the house. It is sturdy enough to hold a good amount of weight without wobbling or feeling flimsy. I have been looking for a nice looking shoe rack to help me organize the clutter of shoes in entryway closet. My budget was small so I started scowling amazon for a deal. Everything I was finding in my price range looked cheap and was made of plastic until I found this shelf. I feel like this was the perfect find! It really looks high quality but was an awesome price. Below are the pros and cons I have found with the product. Pros: 1) Easy Assembly- It took my husband about 2 minutes to put together. There were only 4 pieces and the holes were already drilled so it was as simple as can be. It came with one sheet of directions that were clear and easy to follow. 2.) Sturdy- My biggest fear was it was going to be flimsy and fall apart quickly. This is definitely not the case! The wood seems sturdy and appears to be expensive. No body would guess that I actually got it for $13. 3.) Nice Color- I ordered the Espresso and I am loving the way it looks! It also is great because it hides dirt. My kids like to jump in the mud and then throw their shoes in the closet so I am glad that the color really hides a lot. Cons: 1.) Made out of Laminated Plywood- The product does not look or feel like it is plywood but it is. I don't think anyone will ever know though! ... show more

We chose this option mainly because of the price and our experience with the smaller, lighter, balsa-wood-like shoe racks that we've had in the past. The ClosetMaid also SEEMS to have a more "finished look" so we felt it would work at our front entrance where we get the most foot traffic and have the clutter of shoes 24-7. The product arrived on time via UPS, double boxed. Upon removing the four pressed-wood pieces, two were scratched (4-inch + scratches) and one board had a "dent" on the bottom. The pre-drilled holes were also very rough and the espresso laminate was torn away exposing the light-colored pressed wood underneath. All the contents were there and assembly was simple, but the screws did not sink flush to the surface. I tried to over-tighten one screw so that the screw head didn't protrude from the side... crack, crack... the pressed wood started to strip so I stopped. Of the eight screws only two were properly countersinked (countersunk?). The finishing step was pressing the little plastic caps on to cover the silver screw heads. Since the screws are not countersinked, the caps pop off. Two of the caps could not stand up to the pressure of being pressed into the screw head. Bummer. You really notice the 2-5 silver screw heads (depending on whether you find the black caps when they fall out). So it works. Three stars = "It's okay." It's a shelf for shoes. But what is missing is the attention to detail. Our brand new ClosetMaid espresso-finish shoe rack looks banged up and used, with silver screw heads sticking out on the surface and a big scratch that we masked with a Sharpie.
