Great Intro

Novellas are a tricky thing for me, I really love books with a lot of character development which is just hard to do in a short format, which is why I normally only like novellas that take place with already established characters. This one is an intro to a series, which is another one of my exceptions for novellas, so I figured I would give it a shot. I want to say first off that I really liked this introduction to the town, the characters in the book aren’t local, they are on vacation, so we get to see the town through their eyes. I think this is a great way to set up a series that takes place in a town. I also really liked that these characters had a years long preexisting relationship (or what seems like dislike), so it’s believable that things would develop, it doesn’t feel like insta-love which I generally don’t like. It feels authentic. I really liked Cleo, my biggest problem with her is that while reading the book all I wanted to do was eat a cupcake or a muffin (she’s a pastry chef). I love that she feels very down to earth even though he dad massively rich. I also like that she is doing this for herself, that she ran away to Montana for a much needed vacation and space from her overwhelming family life. She’s a grown woman, she deserves to stand on her own. Austin is also really likable. He’s a self-made man. He’s a good son and a good brother. He basically has a crush on Cleo, the woman he is suppose to be guarding through his security firm, which he knows is a bad idea, so he’s kind of mean to her as a way to protect himself. It definitely pulls at the heartstrings when he really sees that he hurts her feelings. I liked the two of them together, I liked the epilogue, and I really liked the town. I’m excited to read the series.

Cute

This is a cute, quick romance about Cleo Hillcrest and Austin Myles. Cleo comes to Quincy, Montana, for a vacation over Christmas. She has always been under her father's thumb and she needed to get away. Austin is in charge of the security team for her and, unknown to Cleo, is also there in Quincy to watch and protect her. She is not happy about it when she finds out. Cleo thinks that Austin hates her and that's what he wants her to think. He feels way too much where Cleo is concerned and he needs this job. If he let his feelings be known, he knows he would be fired. Of course, Cleo has always had feelings for him, too. I like that we did get an introduction to some of the Edens in this book. It didn't truly feel part of The Edens series as they weren't the main focus. Enjoyable, but I should have read it before Juniper Hill as I would have understood some of the mentions about Cleo better.

Cleo and Austin

This was a cute holiday novella and a great introduction to Quincy and the Edens. It combined the bodyguard romance, forbidden romance, and enemies to lovers romance tropes with a little bit of “it’s always been you” thrown in. Cleo ran away from LA for a three day vacation over Christmas, to do something for herself and get away from the glitz and glamour of her father’s Christmas celebrations. Her bodyguard, Austin, was tasked with going to Montana and bringing her back, but ends up agreeing to stay. As the two spend time together it gets harder and harder for them each to hide their attraction. They both have harbored crushes for the four years they’ve known each other each other and when they finally act on it and have an honest conversation, there’s no going back for them. In this short prequel, many of the Edens are introduced and there is a great glimpse of the town of Quincy. I loved that Devney Perry used a couple outside of the series to introduce the town and I loved the holiday feel.

I miss the Edens something fierce

I worried that if I showed how much I loved your food, everyone would see.” “See what?” “That I’m in love with you.” I always believed that writing a good novella is, in many ways, harder than writing a full length novel. Sure, it has less pages. But to make it feel like a complete story? That’s hard. So, it always amazes me when an author can pull it off. But it really shouldn’t. Not this time. Devney Perry has taught me she can deliver big. Over and over again. And Christmas in Quincy is no exception. Cleo and Austin’s story didn’t feel rushed. It didn’t feel incomplete. Cleo and Austin’s story was pure gold with Christmas in Quincy as the perfect background. Their attraction, their banter, their past. Goodness, it was incredible. Everything felt so natural. So inevitable. Not sure how I feel about Mateo winking at her but I’ll allow it 🤨

Prequel/novella to The Eden Series

3.5-4.0 Stars We are first introduced to the lovely town of Quincy Montana in Christmas in Quincy, a prequel (novella) to The Edens series by Devney Perry. Cleo Hillcrest is tired of pretending to the fake people at her father’s and stepmother’s parties. She decides to skip them and instead take a short vacation to Quincy for a quiet and relaxing Christmas. The Eloise Inn is run by Eloise Eden and is beautiful. Cleo is not surprised when her father calls demanding she return home. What does surprise Cleo is when Austin Myles, the head of her father’s security, shows up at her door to personally escort her back to California. I thought Cleo was a great character and I liked her very much. I did like Austin too, but he was unnecessarily unkind to Cleo at times. Both fought an attraction towards the other that neither knew existed, so I get this was Austin’s way of forcing distance and keeping things professional. The story was overall cute and I did enjoy it, however the first book in the series Indigo Ridge is so much better. It’s a great book and I’m looking forward to the entire series.

Quick and Easy Read

It was a quick and easy read. The book wasn't really what I expected, and I wish there was more of the Edens in the book. I still liked it and so far, I haven't found a Devney Perry book that is bad.
