I currently use a water container with a built-in heating base. It's a pain! I have to unplug and hull the whole thing inside to fill with water. I like this base because I will be able to switch out the water without fussing with a cord everytime. The description says 12" and it is almost 12" on the bottom, but the top is 11" in diameter (if that makes a difference with the water container you're using). The bottom piece of sheet metal has shape edges, and you could easily cut yourself if you're not careful. I"ll update my review after using once it gets cold. I'm concerned about the water container sliding off this heating base because there is no lip or anything to secure it. There is a long 9' 7" cord, and the whole thing seems to be made well. ... show more

    • Seems to heat up just fine, cord unprotected
This won't turn on till it's very cold (35 degrees F). It's not that cold yet, so I put the unit in the freezer for a bit, got it nice and cold, then took it out and plugged it in. Using thermal imaging, we could see that the coils were heating up. So, it works. The one thing I don't like about this, the cord is unprotected. It should be encased in chicken peck-protected metal casing. It is just a standard heavy duty electrical cord. So, as chickens love to peck EVERYTHING, I will have to figure out a way to encase the cord part that will be on the ground. ... show more

Ordered this for our freezing PA winters. The unit heats up nicely and the metal waterer fits perfectly on top. The cord is nice and long. I wish it had the metal coil (like horse waters have) just to provide a bit more protection of the cord (mostly in case of rodents) but I'm hoping it'll be fine. Nice product! ... show more

… may be too warm. I’ve set this up to try it out so I could do a review. I’m not sure the chickens like the water this warm. I think this would be perfect once the temperature drops. So don’t use it yet. Otherwise it’s easy to install and it’s easy to run and when we get snow and temperature below is 30, it’s gonna be great. But not right now. I don’t know that I would give this as a gift but if you have a chicken, love her as a friend, give it a try. The price is right.. ... show more

This product is exactly as described, though it does get too hot to touch during it's warming cycle. It shuts off when the ambient temperature reaches a certain threshold. I would keep this under a covered area and propped up on some bricks or a piece of sheet metal. So far so good.

This water heater (for keeping poultry water from freezing in winter) only turns on in low temperatures, so to test it we froze a metal cake round of water and set it on the heater. It began to warm pretty quickly and effectively. Heater has a good surface area for a large bowl. This heater is not to be used with plastic. Metal waterers or heavy pottery type water bowls will work well with this. There was one area on the side that wasn't heating but there is enough heat overall that it works fine to thaw/prevent frozen water for the birds. We've not used this kind and maybe that is how they are designed. We measured the cord at 114 inches in length. Our hens are outdoors under cover, but the entire length of the cord won't be under cover so, for safety in wet conditions we will put a protective waterproof cover at the junction where this cord attaches to the other extension cord. ... show more
