  • Good Looking, Easy to Customize & Assemble
Size: Queen
I bought this bed for several reasons: storage potential, materials, and customization opportunity. The floor-to-platform clearance under this bed, with no middle support leg, was a huge selling point for me. If you get the Queen sized frame you can fit both the Trundle and Drawers (on opposite sides and ordered separately) under the bed which allows for quite a bit of very customizable storage vs. many bed frames on the market with built in drawers. The solid, Tulip Poplar wood was another big selling point. You'll see in some of the photos I have attached that the natural color is pretty light - personally, I found this very attractive. Out of the box some of the ends were a little rough and there was one major dent (probably due to shipping) on one of the leg pieces. I used 220 grit sand paper to soften the edges and take off any roughness, but there wasn't much. The dent wasn't bad enough for me to justify sending it back (you don't even see it, since it is on the leg against the wall). I read another customer's in-depth review about staining their frame and it was super helpful (ie: I didn't stain / finish the center beams, that just support the mattress). Since this was my first wood-related project I read several articles online (and watched several youtube videos) about Tulip Poplar, and the best options for finishing the wood. Some helpful takeaways: my frame had streaks of green in the wood; but this will turn a bit more brown in color over time, you can hasten the change by setting the boards out in the sun for a few hours. I laid mine on the back patio and opted for a clear coat of Satin Wipe-On Poly which is why they're spaced out in my photo. I did the first two coats and then sanded with 440 grit sand paper and did a third coat based on recommendations. I have to agree, sanding between coats 2 and 3 is the way to go. I tried a few boards with three coats, no sanding between, and they are noticeable more rough - I ended up sanding and re-coating. By sanding in between you will get a silky smooth finish. I posted a photo with the various supplies I used to help anyone who likes the look (though it's not really distinguishable from the out-of-box color, it is protected better from wear). Just in case, I did take a photo of the color difference between a naked board and one with three coats of the Wipe-On Poly. It seemed to make things a smidge darker and "warmer". Assembly was incredibly easy and straight forward, but it did help to have a buddy and a power drill. As soon as it was finished we plopped the mattress on and I jumped right on it. Seems sturdy and my first guest had no problems. Update: several guests and 5 months later, still in great shape. ... show more

  • A very happy return customer
Size: Queen
At this point I have 3 bedrooms in the house replaced with different frames from KD Frames. Absolutely love the quality, craftmanship, the super easy assembly, and the durability - the oldest frame in the house is 10 years old, was disassembled and re-assembled through multiple moves, and is solid as rock to the day. The beds have slowly replaced offerings from the local Ikea. While Ikea uses glued wood for slats and such, these are solid wood and have stood the test of time and my wild bed-jumping children. The slats from Ikea broke - or rather came apart layer by layer - from the middle. A second big plus for this bed is the unfinished wood. Easy to pop into the local Home Depot and grab one of the many polyurethane options. For the one in the picture I used an espresso poly-and-stain all in one. The first coat sinks into the wood, the second one sort of standardizes the color across all the slats (they start with various shades of beige to green), and the third finishes off to a nice dark shade. I probably skipped steps and did them wrong - I did not use any sandpaper at all. Given that the oldest bed with this approach has given me 10 years already without any maintenance, I'm OK with the price-value curve here. Assembly of the bed takes about an hour with my 8 year old helping me match up the parts to the part numbers, a power screwdriver with a hex bit, and a second adult helping put the final assembly together. I'm not sure if this matters in today's day and age, but I really like the manufacturer's statement that this bed is made in the US from wood sourced from the US. ... show more

  • Premium quality
Size: Twin XL
This bed has an amazing quality. It’s immediately apparent once you see the wood. Very solid- just as it should be. The color is beautiful as is, but I decided to stain and finish mine to match existing furniture. I’ve never stained or finished wood so this was a first for me! I chose not to stain the mattress slats but stained everything else. (Twin XL) For anyone wondering what I used for staining/finishing this bed: - Minwax pre-stain wood conditioner - Minwax red mahogany wood penetrating oil stain (one coat) - Minwax fast drying polyurethane clear satin (3 coats) - 220 and 320 sandpaper Anyway I just love how beautiful this bed is, I love the natural wood grain that is present. It really shows off its quality. I really love how the stain brought out the natural wood grain as well. I will say FYI that most of the notches for the mattress slats are rough/kind of splintery on the edges (where the top side is/mattress sits). I just sanded them down slightly because I was worried about the mattress dragging across it, or my kiddo getting curious and running his fingers under the mattress one day. Assembly was super easy. Very pleased. I ended up laying down anti-slip material on top of the slats but I’m not sure if it’s necessary- I did it just in case. My kid loves his bed and I will be updating this to see how it holds up but so far it has been VERY solid and sturdy. No squeaking. We bought a 10 inch twin xl mattress here on Amazon (Coolvie 10 Inch Hybrid Mattress) just to clarify to anyone for mattress size/height reference on my photos. This is truly a great bed! A premium quality product and I am so happy I decided to buy this bed for my kiddo! **update** It’s been about three months now that my kiddo has had this, no problems with it at all. We did tighten the screws as suggested one month into using it. Still really solid and sturdy, no squeaking at all. We (parents) sit on it all the time too. We love it! Edit # 2- Six months later and we still love this bed. No issues and I highly recommend this bed! ... show more
