  • Way better than the Harbor Freight ones
My experience using spreaders in the past has always been the hardware store quality ones or walk-behind spreaders from stores like Harbor Freight. This is my first time using a brand name one and the difference is pretty obvious, this thing works better, has less issues, and is just all around built beefier than anything I've used before. I'm really impressed. There is more assembly required than I expected but it wasn't too bad and the instructions included are decent. I had to try this out even though it's the middle of winter here. And this thing was a champ. It handled every type of salt that I tried with ease and didn't get bogged down. The weight and rigidity meant that it was easy to push even over slushy ground. This thing's built much better than other spreaders I've used and gets two thumbs up from me. I can't wait to use it in the spring to lay down some seed. ... show more

  • Quality Spreader
I've never used a Chapin product before but my first impression is that they provide quality. There's minimal plastic used when it comes to the mechanical parts. The stuff that's likely to wear out. On top of that, the assembly instructions are clear and concise. However, the manual does mention a rain cover included but that's not the case. If you look this model up on the Chapin website, it mentions a rain cover in the description but then says one ISN'T included under the specifications. So I'm not sure where the error lies. Putting that aside, design wise, I appreciate the features. The real handlebars/grips vs a plain metal looping handlebar stood out to me as well as well placed controls and the pneumatic tires. There are similar spreaders that come with plastic tires. Not ideal for setting up a fresh lawn. Also, the pneumatic tires should last much longer and take some abuse. Being a contractor level piece of equipment, it makes sense and plastic wouldn't be acceptable at this level. All in all, these features make for a well functioning spreader. ... show more

  • Heavy Duty Lawn Coverage Made Easy
This broadcast spreader is built like serious lawn equipment rather than a lightweight homeowner tool. The frame feels sturdy, and the hopper holds a large amount of material so you’re not constantly stopping to refill. Rolling it across the yard feels smooth even on uneven ground. The adjustment lever gives you good control over how much product comes out, which helps avoid uneven patches. Whether spreading seed or fertilizer, it stays consistent and doesn’t clog easily. The wide spread pattern helps cover ground efficiently without extra passes. The handle height and grip make it comfortable to push, even over larger areas. It doesn’t feel awkward or top heavy once loaded, which makes longer jobs more manageable. ... show more

  • Lawn seed spreader
Picked this baby up to replace a super small one we used for salt spreading and it is a bit of an overkill for how much salting we need done buuut I also have a huge yard that requires some TLC this upcoming spring as my dogs and their ways have destroyed some grassy areas I will need to repair. I adore this thing and recommend it. Easy to put together and clean as I can see and much better than my previous one. ... show more

  • Fast, Commercial-Grade Spreader, but Pricey and Needs Better Part Labeling
The media could not be loaded. Rating: 4 out of 5 Price: about $300 This is a review of the Chapin Turf Spreader Pro. It’s a 100-pound capacity spreader that comes with two different augers, which I didn’t expect at this price point: one meant for denser materials like ice melt salt (what I’m using), and a finer auger for things like fertilizer/seed. Unboxing and assembly Assembly is doable, but it was a little nuanced. Part of that is on me because I was assembling it while juggling my toddler and infant, but the bigger issue is the parts in the blister packs weren’t clearly labeled. The instructions will reference something like “H1,” but you have to keep bouncing between the diagram and the packaging to figure out what “H1” actually is. If the packs or parts had clearer labels (even simple stickers), assembly would go much faster. Performance and use This thing moves product fast, even with the gates closed down for a straightforward spread. I noticed immediately how quickly it drops material and how efficiently it disperses. The biggest takeaway: it made me more efficient with salt. I finished my driveway and my neighbor’s driveway in about 5 to 6 minutes, and only used around 25 pounds. When I was hand-spreading, I’d burn through way more product because the coverage just wasn’t as even. So while $300 stings, this should save money long-term on material, and it saves your back because you’re not lugging and flinging by hand. The build feels legitimately stout, and the 12-inch tubeless air tires are a nice touch. Pros • Spreads product very quickly and evenly • Helped me use less ice melt while covering more area • 100 lb capacity is genuinely useful • Includes two augers for different material densities • Feels commercial-grade, sturdy tires and overall build Cons • $300 is expensive, even if it’s “commercial grade” • Assembly is slower than it should be due to unclear part labeling • I wish the hopper had a lid to keep moisture out (salt, seed, etc.) Bottom line This is a strong 4 out of 5. It’s fast, efficient, and robust, and it’s already saved me time and product. If Chapin fixed the labeling/assembly experience and included a hopper lid, it’d be an easy 5. ... show more

  • Works but QC problems and price don’t match
I got this spreader expecting contractor-level quality for the price, and it didn’t land quite there. For nearly $300, I shouldn’t have to wrestle with basic quality control. One wheel arrived with the valve stem tucked inside the rim. It wasn’t broken, but I had finagle for a bit to carefully dig it out without damaging it further and reseat it before I could inflate the tire. Assembly also requires tools the box doesn’t include, which feels cheap at this price point. A rain cover isn’t included, even though it’s listed as an available replacement part, so that was another disappointment. Once assembled, it does function as advertised, and the 5-year limited warranty is a point in its favor. Still, for the money, I expected something closer to ready-to-use and a lot more dialed-in. ... show more
