  • Good quality.
One of the best salt spreader. It was easy Easy to Assemble. Heavy duty products.

  • Amazing heavy duty spreader
This thing is a beast. It's extremely heavy duty, meaning it can take 80 lb of salt and still be completely stable. The wheels are massive and made of proper rubber instead of just plastic that all scratch dent and fall apart over time. Assembly just took a few minutes. This has really nice functionality in the form of being able to put down guards on the left and right of the spreader. This would allow you to help limit any spread off of a sidewalk and onto your yard. It comes with multiple different auger types to be able to move around or break apart clumped up product. Don't use regular rock salt with this, as it is corrosive and can be harsh on the metal parts. Ice melt is a safe alternative. You can also use fertilizer with this. ... show more

  • I have a couple of concerns with this one. Potential design flaws
The good news about this unit is that it arrives about 90% assembled. All you need to do is assemble the upper assembly bars and screw on the auger. Easier said than done though. The manual states assembly should take no more than 5-10 minutes. It took me about 2 hours. Let me save you some frustration and time and just say a socket wrench is going to be your best friend with assembling this. Use a 10mm bit. Funny how the manual states that when doing the auger, but not the upper assembly. They need to specify that as that would have saved me some time knowing what size to use. The instructions didn’t help me so i started looking up how-to videos on YouTube. I found one good one but it went too fast, so i instead just looked at customer images to figure out what i needed to do and that believe it or not was the biggest help! The part that holds the salt is made of heavy duty plastic and it definitely feels very sturdy. I’m a bit disappointed with the auger as it feels like thinner plastic. Time will tell to see how it holds up. It comes with 2 different augers; one for salt, one for seed. I think it’s a nice plus that this unit comes with pneumatic tires that look like they have good traction. Note, it takes 30 psi to fill them and they arrive filled. The unit is lightweight and super easy to move. You can rest assured that it won’t tip over thanks to the rear bottom bar when not in use. Potential buyers should know that the manual states this spreader is NOT recommended for use with rock salt. You will need to use ice melt (Calcium chloride) as this is what the manual states. I’m assuming that is due to the plastic auger as ice melt is more granulated and easier to dispense than rock salt which probaly needs a metal auger to break it up. I have a couple concerns with this unit and maybe this is a design flaw but the bar that you pull in that spreads the salt, one end (as you can see from my pics) goes through the upper bar assembly while the other end DOES NOT. It is flush with the hole. Now if you close the gate it increases the length which makes the bar easier to pull in but it also makes it LOOSE and it might come apart or out of the holes. However, if you open the gate, it decreases the length and it tightens it (which is where i have it set in my pics) however this makes it harder to pull in all the way to spread the salt. I don’t understand why Chapin did this but it needs more metal pole to poke through that hole to give me peace of mind. I wonder if there is anything at my local hardware store that can hold in both sides. It’s too bad they didn’t have these threaded for nuts, because it needs nuts to hold it on there. This is my reason for 4 stars. Time will tell how it holds up and i will update my review. ... show more

  • The Salt Pro that cant spread salt
I was very excited to get this salt spreader only to be immediately disappointed upon reading the user manual where it says not to use rock salt in the spreader...Its called the Salt Pro! How can it not spread rock salt? The spreader comes with two blades - one for seed, fertilizer, other spring items, the other for snow melt (but not rock salt). I think this is just totally unacceptable, and Chapin needs to address the design or change the name of this spreader. Assembly took maybe 15min. It wasn't hard by any means, but it wasn't all smooth sailing. There are extra parts included which are never mentioned in the manual. There is also 2 sets of hardware for connecting the handles - one for permanent installation, the other for 'quick' removal for storage. The quick removal hardware isn't really quick or easy, its simply tool-less. These options were also not mentioned in the manual; I just figured them out on my own. The spreader does work well with snow melt, which I just happened to have on hand since the store was out of rock salt. The spreader broadcasts evenly, and controlling flow is pretty easy with the hand lever. The leavers over the wheels control broadcast width, and they work well. The reservoir holds the equivalent of about 50-60lbs of salt, but the actual weight would vary depending on material. The reservoir cover is a nice addition for the winter months. The build quality seems reasonably good, except I fear the blades might break since one is plastic and the other is aluminum. So far nothing has broken though. Overall, the design is fairly good, but Chapin needs to address this rock salt issue. This should not be advertised as a rock salt spreader if you cannot use rock salt in it. The price is high but is typical of spreaders of this caliber. ... show more
