Seeder works great. It’s the best one I’ve ever used. Great product

  • Premium-feeling handheld spreader with a large hopper and good controls
Style: Newer Version
TL;DR -- This is a very nice chest-mounted broadcast spreader with a large hopper, solid straps, and better adjustment controls than I expected. Overall, I’m impressed with this spreader. It feels like a premium handheld/chest-mounted broadcast spreader rather than a cheap little seed shaker. The only assembly required was attaching the handle, which was simple enough. The hopper is quite large. Roughly speaking, it feels like it could hold about two basketballs worth of product, which is pretty wild for something you can carry. The lid opening is also nice and large, making it easy to pour in grass seed, fertilizer, or whatever else you’re spreading without fighting a tiny fill hole. The strap attachment to the hopper feels solid, and the padded straps make sense for the amount of weight this can potentially hold. The padded support handle for the off-hand also seems like a great design choice, especially if you are using this across a larger area or on uneven ground. The adjustment controls are one of the better parts of the setup. Being able to control both the product flow and the direction of flow is really useful. That makes this feel a lot more capable than a basic handheld spreader. My hopper did have some plastic abrasion on the rear, which looks like it probably happened during manufacturing. It does not affect function at all, but it is worth mentioning. For me, it is not enough to remove a star because the overall product still feels very well made. The idea that you could handheld-broadcast an entire decent-sized yard in one go is pretty cool, especially for hills, weird terrain, tight areas, or yards where a rolling spreader is annoying to use. Overall, this feels like a quality spreader and a very useful tool. Large capacity, good controls, solid-feeling construction, and a smart chest-mounted design. ... show more

  • Ergonomic Efficiency for Large Lawn Jobs: The Chapin 8700G Chest-Mounted Spreader
Style: Newer Version
If you have ever tackled a large-scale seeding or fertilizing job with a traditional hand-held or bag-sling spreader, you know the physical toll it takes. Constantly carrying the weight on one side of your body inevitably leads to a painful muscle kink in your side, and the small capacities mean constant trips back to the garage to refill. The Chapin 8700G Chest-Mounted Spreader solves both of these issues beautifully. By centering the weight right on your chest, this spreader balances the load evenly across your torso. The padded straps are comfortable to wear, and so far, the front-mount design has been completely free of the side cramps and muscle aches that plague other portable styles. The mechanical functions are equally smooth: the hopper is easy to fill without spilling, the hand crank operates smoothly, and the flow gate adjustment is easy to set. The standout feature here is the generous 35-pound capacity, which holds ample seed or fertilizer to make short work of large yards. It bridges the gap between small handheld units and bulky push-spreaders, allowing you to easily navigate tight paths, garden edges, or uneven slopes. The primary pain point is the cost. While it is a high-quality tool from a highly reliable lawn care brand, the price tag makes it difficult to justify if you only have a small yard or plan to use it infrequently. A basic bag spreader can get the same job done for less than half the price. However, if you have a larger property to maintain and want to save your back from unnecessary strain, the ergonomic design and massive capacity make this spreader well worth the investment. ... show more

  • Fantastic for patching, spot seeding, and tight spaces
Style: Newer Version
I picked up this Chapin chest‑mounted spreader because my tow‑behind seeder just can’t get into the tight spots around the yard — the narrow strips along the fence, the corners near the shed, the little patches where the mower tires always seem to chew up the grass. I was tired of trying to hand‑spread seed and ending up with clumps in one spot and bare dirt in another. The first time I strapped this thing on, I realized how much easier it was going to make my life. The padded straps sit comfortably across the shoulders, and once it’s clipped in, the hopper sits right where you need it — close enough to reach, but not bouncing around. I filled it up, cranked the handle, and immediately saw how evenly it was throwing seed. No more guessing, no more handfuls tossed into the wind. What really impressed me was how well it handled those awkward areas. I walked right into spots my tow‑behind could never reach, and the side baffles kept the spread tight and controlled so I wasn’t blasting seed into the driveway or flower beds. The gate control is simple but effective — five settings that actually make a difference, letting me dial in exactly how much material I want to drop. After a few passes, I stepped back and realized I’d covered all the problem areas in a fraction of the time it usually takes. No dragging equipment around, no wrestling with a bulky spreader, no uneven coverage. Just smooth, controlled seeding exactly where I needed it. For spot checks, patch repairs, and all those little areas a tow‑behind can’t touch, this thing has been a game‑changer. It’s one of those tools you don’t realize you needed until you use it — and then you wonder how you managed without it. ... show more

  • Even Application Around Lawn Obstacles
Style: Newer Version
I used this chest mounted spreader to seed and fertilize a lawn that has several drainage pipes running across it and like that I no longer accidentally dump product when going over those obstacles like I do with wheeled spreaders. The wide mouth hopper makes filling and measuring straightforward and the translucent plastic lets me see remaining material while working. The padded straps and quick release let me set the unit down without spilling and the flow adjustment gives usable control over application rate so I can keep product off the pipes, driveways, and mulch and concentrate coverage on the turf. The spread pattern is consistent at walking pace but becomes less uniform if I move faster or if the seed is very coarse. The plastic feels durable for occasional yard work and the compact size stores easily, making it a reasonable value for homeowners who need a portable spreader that reduces accidental dumping over lawn features. ... show more

  • Reliable Backup Utility: Smooth, Jam-Free Spreading for Quick Jobs!
Style: Newer Version
The Chapin 8700G Chest Mounted Spreader is a highly convenient and well-designed tool that serves as a dependable addition to any landscaping or lawn care routine. This item arrived promptly and was packaged securely, ensuring the lightweight poly hopper and mechanical assemblies were fully protected from any scratches or physical damage during delivery. Out of the box, the sizing and overall weight distribution are excellent; it sits comfortably high on the chest without feeling overly bulky or unmanageable when filled to its full 35-pound capacity. The materials feel solid for standard application, featuring robust padded straps that effectively relieve shoulder strain and a quick-release mechanism that makes taking it on and off completely hassle-free. Functionally, this spreader performs admirably for casual use and quick spot-treatments. I gifted this to a professional landscaper who noted that while it isn't quite engineered to endure heavy-duty, day-in and day-out professional landscaping abuse, it is absolutely perfect to keep on hand as a quick backup or emergency unit for tricky, inclined terrain. Throughout testing with grass seed and granular fertilizers, it provided flawless operation with zero instances of spread jams or clogging, and the manual crank mechanism flows very smoothly. For an entry-to-mid-tier unit, it easily earns a 4 out of 5-star rating for delivering reliable independence on the job. As a helpful suggestion, ensure that you fully dry out the interior of the enclosed hopper and clear away any fine dust after each use to keep the gravity-fed gate working seamlessly and to prevent any future moisture blockages. ... show more

The quick-release harness is a thoughtful feature that makes taking it on and off fast and easy. The spreader feels well built and provides smooth, consistent distribution when properly adjusted. The wide-fill opening makes loading simple, and the controls are easy to operate while wearing the unit. • Wished I had known about this style before I purchased the push kind
Style: Newer Version
This backpack-style spreader is a great alternative to a traditional push spreader, especially if you have a large yard. I found it much easier to maneuver, and it was simpler to keep track of where I had already spread seed compared to pushing a wheeled spreader back and forth across the lawn. The spreader feels well made, and the overall construction seems durable enough to hold up to regular seasonal use. The straps are adjustable, allowing you to get a comfortable fit for different body sizes, and once adjusted, it stays in place well while you're working. It's very easy to use, although there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to the weight. If you completely fill the hopper, it may be a little too heavy for some people depending on their size or fitness level. If that's the case, I'd recommend only filling it about halfway until you get used to carrying and operating this style of spreader. For most users, though, a full hopper should be manageable. The only real downside I found is that you have to take the unit off to refill it, unlike a push spreader where you can often just dump another bag of seed into the hopper. For me, that's a worthwhile tradeoff considering how much easier it is to move around the yard and maintain an even application pattern. I've only used it for spreading grass seed so far, but it appears versatile enough that it could likely be used for other spreading applications as well, depending on the material. Overall, I think this spreader offers good value for the money. It's functional, easy to use, adjustable, and appears durable enough to provide many seasons of service. If you're looking for an alternative to a push spreader, this is definitely worth considering. ... show more
