Description

"It is rare to find a book on art that presents complex aesthetic principles in clear readable form. Ceramics, by Philip Rawson, is such a book. I discovered it ten years ago, and today my well-worn copy has scarcely a page on which some statement is not underlined and starred."―Wayne Higby, from the Foreword Read more

  • Fabulous book Fabulous book
Format: Paperback
Fantastic book. Horrible reprint. The text on the left hand page is hurried in the binding!

  • This book is printed badly This book is printed badly
Format: Paperback
I was very excited to read this book. But when I opened it, all the left side pages bleed into the binding. You can't read it. Sad.

  • Useful Thinking About Clay
Format: Paperback
This is not a how-to or design book. Rather, the author takes a step back to consider fundamental aspect of ceramics, historically and aesthetically. I found it super helpful as a potter in keeping my eye on the big picture.

  • Understanding Ceramics with Philip Rawson
Format: Paperback
This book is not a glossy full-color presentation of the world's spectacular ceramic pieces. It does contain a hundred or so black and white illustrations of ceramics from almost all cultures; ancient and modern. Philip Rawson writes about the general concept of ceramics, the techniques, and the philosophy and symbolism. I found this book to be very helpful in that it gives an overview of all types of ceramics and allows the interested potter or sculptor to survey Rawson's intriguing perceptions. This book promotes ideas and facilitates their coming to the reader through discussions of his seemingly infinite observations. Rawson was a brilliant art professor and brings amazing viewpoints to his readers. Ideas, after all, are the most important factor in creating works of art. ... show more

  • good reat
Format: Paperback
this book is a good read. not easy to read, but its a good read, lots of vocabularies and sentence structures. you have to be awake to understand it, and that’s not in the first round.. good luck.

  • Get the Earlier Edition!
Format: Paperback
This was required reading for a pottery class. That part is "okay" -- a little stilted language. The book is poorly printed (some pages are chopped by the binding, so reading is difficult). Some margins are really wide; other pages have margins that are tiny. The cool chart (figure 16) is cut off both at the top and middle of the chart. ... show more

  • older book but still very good info
Format: Paperback
another ceramics book every serious ceramics artist/student/instructor will benefit by having in their library of knowledge. Analytical, concise, pictures and diagrams, and deals with a wide range of topics and technical data.

  • This reprint is terrible. Do not buy. This reprint is terrible. Do not buy.
Format: Paperback
As someone else mentioned, this reprint wasn't resized properly, at all. The book binding goes over every center margin, so good luck trying to read and understand. There are diagrams that have been cut off too.
