I cannot wait to give this to my grandson. His mother just started reading Harry Potter books to him. He loves Legos and making paper airplanes. He is nearly 8 years old. I suspect this will be a team project. I can imagine the many hours we will have together bonding on the numerous projects in this book. Origami will be a new creative adventure for him. Purchased as a birthday gift for an 8-year-old. She's getting into Harry Potter, and she enjoys crafts. She was excited to receive this. I flipped through it myself; it could be a tad challenging. Hopefully, she ends up enjoying it.

I have always loved to do origami art, and when I saw this, I debated back and forth whether to get this for my son's upcoming birthday. Some origami books that are just the same patterns but just re-named to fit the themed book. (i.e. I already have those patterns and would just be buying a book that repeats them under a different name.) NOT the case with this book! 1.) The directions and pictures in the book are colorful and great! Even for a newbies to origami (as my son is) 2.) There are different levels of projects to try 3.) This is NICE quality paper the book was printed on! 4.) There are origami patterns I have not seen before in other books I have, they are unique to Harry Potter world 5.) Includes some cut out origami paper specific to some of the patterns :) ... show more

    • Beware: Inadequate instructions for beginners!!
My 9 year old grandson loves Harry Potter, and I thought this book as well as Volume 2 would be the perfect gifts. While there are some great things about this purchase, there are some words of caution to pay attention to. First of all, the positives: The illustrated paper and clever designs were outstanding! Next, the negatives: The perforated paper was hard to remove from the book even with perforations. The pages of Volume 2 were somewhat easier to remove from the binding. Most frustrating of all, almost all design instructions were overwhelmingly inadequate for a beginner or nearly-new beginner. This book needs a disclaimer that it is NOT for beginners. I am so disappointed in Scholastic. As a retired teacher, I trusted the fact that this book was published by Scholastic who, in the past, had almost always provided wonderful books for my students and families. I wonder if the authors and designers gave these instructions to origami beginners to gain feedback before publication. I hope this company listens to me and does some revising. Please note my comments also apply to Volume 2 that I purchased at the same time. Also note that I’ve done origami in the past, and even I had trouble following the instructions. ... show more
