Description

Celestron’s StarSense Explorer 150AZ is the first telescope that uses your smartphone to analyze the night sky and calculate its position in real time, making stargazing easier than ever. Perfect for beginners, this app-enabled telescope lets you dock your phone, launch the app, and follow on-screen arrows to planets, stars, galaxies, and more. Unlike other astronomy apps that rely solely on gyroscopes, StarSense uses patented sky recognition technology and a Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA)—like the sophisticated location systems used by satellites—to deliver accurate, real-time guidance. Simply align your phone with the telescope optics, and within minutes, you’ll be exploring with confidence. The app automatically generates a list of the best objects to view based on your exact time and location. Choose one and navigate there by following the on-screen arrows. When the bullseye turns green, your target is ready in the eyepiece. The high-quality 150mm Newtonian reflector with highly reflective coatings provides bright, detailed views of the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and deep-sky favorites like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy. The tabletop base is compact, lightweight, and easy to transport, making it perfect for travel. The base’s low profile makes accessing the eyepiece easier for some observers (especially children). Includes two eyepieces (10mm and 25mm), a red dot finderscope, a and a StarSense smartphone dock. StarSense Explorer works with most modern smartphones; it is compatible with Android 12 and later, as well as iOS 18 and newer, including iPhone XR and newer models.

  • Great product
Size: StarSense Explorer 150mm
I got this telescope as an upgrade to my simpler telescope from the same brand, and I was impressed by its quality. I feel it is quite easy to use. (The app and the computer program are also pretty awesome, and they make everything much easier to see and to make sense of!) The assembly part was fairly easy, but the instruction manual is not very helpful. That would be my one criticism of the product. It is very sturdy, and the base sets easily on a table or the ground. It is stable, and the view angle is adequate and easy to adjust. The lens that came with it and we got some great viewings of the moon and planets. This item was not cheap but I feel it delivers great quality for the money. ... show more

  • Celestron 130 mm DOB = WINNER!!
Size: StarSense Explorer 130mm
I never review, but this scope (130 mm) deserves one! Fantastic packaging, crystal clear instructions, easy assembly, very high level build quality, beautifully executed, overall. I had the DX 130AZ - FORGET IT!!! This scope, currently, is considerably cheaper and WAY better, in all key aspects. Like what? Tube connection and mount are rock solid on the 130 mm DOB. TERRIBLE, SHAKY, WOBBLY MOUNT ON THE DX! The DOB has no Bird-Jones lens (that's a good thing) AND has a parabolic primary mirror. Build quality is MUCH better on the DOB. Focuser is superior. Take the money saved on the DX and get the dedicated Celestron tripod AND invest in better optics (check out Celestron's E-lux line; get a 25 mm and a 5 mm, or go telescoping high power like the SBOVNY 6-18 mm). Overall, couldn't be happier. Optics are stunning. Highly portable. Remove tube, put in a padded zipper case, base can stow easily in car, RV, etc., grab the tripod and see the night sky like NEVER before!! ... show more

  • Excellent telescope
Size: StarSense Explorer 150mm
Fantastic tabletop telescope. Optics are very clear and the lenses were collated right out of the box. Set up was not difficult and all the instructions, tools and parts were included and easy to follow. It is a bit on the heavier side but not to the point it can’t be moved from spot to spot. Setting up you mobile device to use with the Starsense app and telescope was simple and the Starsense app makes night sky viewing easy, fun and educational. I am very happy with this telescope and think it is one of the better telescopes at this price point. ... show more

  • Not ideal for transport to other locations.
Size: StarSense Explorer 150mm
This seemed to be a nice telescope. I have a lot of trees around my house and planned on taking it. And setting it up somewhere else. Unfortunately, this particular model is not ideal for transporting to another location, other than your home. I had a lot of problems with setting up the programs to make it work. And also it's a main program that it's forty nine ninety nine that is given free is only good for the computer. Not good for out in the field. I was a little bit disappointed with that. I put this together and realized how much effort it was going to take. To use this anywhere so I had to return mine because it was just gonna end up sitting somewhere. And not being used due to the amount of foliage around my property. The telescope seemed like it was very well made and looked to be pretty nice. There was a lot of assembly and the base of it was there. Very heavy, I'm not sure that this is meant for anyone. But an adult or a teenage child at a minimum. The actual base of this telescope was pretty heavy and I was disappointed that they used press board for it other than a quality product like solid wood or or an aluminum, especially at the cost. The other issue I had was the tripod, and any other things that you would definitely need to have with it. We're extremely costly. I tried to use it one time and the moon looked pretty good, but it wasn't really what I expected, to be honest, not based on what I've read from other reviews. Was slightly disappointing, but it's probably a good start off point. ... show more

  • Nice size for a 150mm desktop DOB
Size: StarSense Explorer 150mm
The setup takes a few hours to assemble right out of the box. The instructions could have been better. They need a good set of orientation pictures at better angles. The only trouble I had with the assembly was that the holes that were predrilled were drilled too short. An easy fix to this problem was with a hand drill. I took the 150mm Celestron out for a test after assembly and found that it worked as expected. The lenses were just ok! And, I will be buying Possel lenses with better eye relief. The moons of Jupiter came in as clear points of light even with the packaged 10mm & 25mm lenses. The focus wheel was a little stiff, but a drop oil helped. The DOB frame and base are solid and are easy to handle. But, the 150mm DOB table top is a little heavy. So, if you are thinking about the weight being a problem, then the 114mm desktop DOB might be a better choice. The DOB was on sale at the time I ordered it, and at a discounted price. So for the price I paid it was great. ... show more

  • Would be great with better instructions Would be great with better instructions
Size: StarSense Explorer 150mm
I want to love this but the instructions are lacking. My son has taken it out maybe 2-3 times. It’s really nice. It’s huge but easily transportable. It mounts nicely to the tripod sold separately. Great for older kids once you can figure it out. It’s adjustable and supposedly has a range to see the rings of Saturn . ... show more

  • Worth the stars
Size: StarSense Explorer 114mm
The Celestron StarSense Explorer 114AZ is an amazing telescope for beginners and casual stargazers! The setup was quick and straightforward, and the StarSense app makes finding planets, stars, and constellations incredibly easy — no more guessing where to point. The optics are clear and crisp, and the mount feels stable for its size. I was able to see the Moon’s craters and even Saturn’s rings on my first night out! It’s lightweight enough to move around but still feels solid. Great for anyone who wants to explore the night sky without a steep learning curve. Highly recommend! ... show more

  • Great Telescope
Size: StarSense Explorer 130mm
Great telescope for the price. I was a little worried about the app not being reliable but I followed the instructions and with a bit of patience I was able to get my phone properly aligned with the adapter so the app worked perfectly which made viewing things very easy and a lot of fun. Everything looks nice and clear while viewing and I love how easy this thing is to store since it doesn’t have to be attached to a tripod. Assembly was tedious but easy although I do recommend using a better screwdriver than the one that was provided. ... show more
