The panel is 1 inch think and I used a Dremel with diamond cutting wheel to cut the opening. Make yourself a cardboard template to make things even easier. The media could not be loaded. Great product with the exceptions of a slightly lacking locking system and an ‘okay’ seal strip on the door. I installed this fairly quickly -quicker if I didn’t have to get through a stud.- It was super simple. I found that my son and my cats like to play with the lock causing some trapped cats. It would be more ideal if the lock had to have a slightly stronger hand/fingers turn it and the strip of fibers that seal the door were a bit thicker as well. My wife caulked the outside because “sometimes it just looks nicer” she says and I agree. The door magnet is strong but could always be a little stronger. I found that when it was very windy outside and with the garage door cracked- the door would gently flap at times.

Nice door for the price. I used the included screws to mount each side to the respective side of the door. They are plenty tough to hold the plastic frame in place. This is my 2nd pet door install. The first was mounted on an interior wood door, and I used a jigsaw to cut the hole. I considered a jigsaw for this install, but after doing some reading, I decided to try my angle grinder with a 1/16" thick cut off wheel. I used the outside facing frame of the pet door as a template (the part of the frame intended to fit through the door). I traced it with pencil, and went back over with a sharpie. I cut on the outside edge to leave some wiggle room. The outside frame will cover quite a bit of over cut area. The trick was the thin cut off wheel. Once through the steel, it cut very easily through the steel, and it was easy to hold a straight line without any guide. I did pre-drill the four corners of my tracing, just as a guide. You cut one side of the door at a time. Use the drilled holes as your guide for tracing the other side of the door after cutting the first side. It's easy to remove more material with the grinding wheel if you need to take a little more off for the frame to slide through. I'm going to link the 1/16" cut-off wheels I purchased through Amazon. The cut-off wheel performed great. Definitely pop the pins out of the hinges and put your door on sawhorses. I used a face shield instead of safety goggles (face shield doesn't fog up). You can wear glasses under a face shield too. The cutting of the hole is the trickiest part for sure. I used a punch to start the holes for the 8 screws that hold the frame on (4 on each side). Great for installing in interior doors. Works well for installing through walls. And the latching mechanism lasts for years, rather than the PetSafe latches, which I’ve had break, and wear down to the point that the cats could open the locks themselves.

The media could not be loaded. Just got it today and installed it, so I cannot speak to its longevity. Should it break in a short time, I will update the review. I can see the plastic door getting scratched up after a while as a distinct possibility, but frankly, how is that supposed to be prevented? We wanted one with the ability for the cats to see through, so unless you want one with an opaque swinging door, I think you are just going to have to assume that over time, the clear plastic will have visible scratches and smudges. Right now it's perfect (just installed) but I will come back with an update as to how long it took before it got scratched up (I'm just assuming it's going to happen.) Install was super easy for me, just a drill, drill bit, screwdriver and jigsaw. The thickness of my door was perfect for it, and mine are standard doors, so most people should be OK. I think these are 2 3/8" doors... I THINK! So I didn't have to cut down the plastic at all, but I can see how that would be obnoxious and hard to do, so I got lucky, but not really. Like I typed earlier, these are designed to fit standard thickness doors, and it did. I did not use the wood strip they recommend getting (not included), nor did I use double sided tape. When I cut the door, I cut it on the small side (so I thought), and it turns out it was super-duper snug but not actually too small. I was actually afraid it might be pinching it to the point where I would not be able to fit the second piece, but I got lucky and it fit so tight that I didn't bother to remove it and use the other items. I didn't see the point. If in a little while I notice it starts to get loose, I'll update, but at that point, that will be my fault, as I am admitting I didn't fully follow the instructions (yeah...lazy, I know). My only complaint, even though I am giving it five stars, is that the screws you get are soooo soft, that you want to make sure you use a screwdriver and not a power drill to install them. I barely touched the screws with the drill and it stripped the heads. I was able to salvage it and make it work, but the last 6 I put in by hand, with a screwdriver, without incident. Use the right size screwdriver too or you might have an issue. The 4-way mechanism is straightforward, seems like it will be durable (I'll update as needed), and it doesn't take a lot of effort to push it open, so even little cats and kittens can do it once they are trained. I would recommend, and I like that it comes in white because I think black on my doors would look funny.

Dogs like to poke heads out the door. Sometimes they accidentally activate the latch. Then they farce the door.cracked it pretty quickly and then broke it. Cats use it all the time though. Five stars for functionality, minus one for durability and another for a lock that's too easy for pets to accidentally engage.
