That's me, not the violin. Well, actually, it sorta is the violin, too. If you've priced a lot of musical instruments, you've noticed they fall into roughly three groups; professional models start in the low thousands and go up (up, up, up) from there. Student models can come in from a little over $1K to as low as a couple hundred bucks. And under a hundred bucks? That's a toy. The change is very abrupt. The differences between student and professional models need a professional (or a very good student) to really tell. A toy, on the other hand, is unplayable, and would be less than useless for a student (as it would at best teach them all the wrong things -- and more often than not, drive them away from the instrument with the misapprehension that the problem lies with THEM.) I'm saying all this because this is one of those rare birds that is priced like a toy but delivers a good solid student instrument. This isn't a thousand-dollar instrument. But it belongs among the $400-600 student instruments. And you are paying less. Now about that "adult beginner" thing. A child has more access to academic tutoring. To music rooms and private lessons in studios and all of that. They should get a standard acoustic violin with all the peccadillos attendant to that type. Where this ELECTRIC violin truly shines is with the adult beginner, the self-taught and the dilettante; in short, with people who want to be able to "give it a go" at a stringed instrument without losing the lease on their apartment due to the awful noises issuing from it. It isn't silent. It is, however, quiet. Quiet enough you can practice in a thin-walled apartment or an upstairs bedroom without anyone making a fuss. It is just loud enough on its own so you don't really need headphones. The other part of "adult beginner" is I am old and have messed around with a lot of music-related things over the years and I read a ton. So I knew better than to make a lot of first-timer buyer assumptions. For instance; it comes assembled (I hesitate to say "set up") but not tuned. Really, it should come with the bridge in a box and the strings in their packs, but never mind. As an experienced buyer of bargain instruments I didn't even bother tuning the strings it came with and dropped thirty bucks on a new set of Thomastik Alphayue's. I had no trouble with peg slippage (the reverse, actually), but then I'm a uke player and used to having to shove the pegs in to make them firm up. The electronics worked (sans headphones, which came out of the box with one dead channel already but who cares? I've got better headphones already). But that's not really fair to ask of me, because I'm an electronics tinkerer and as long as the pickup was okay I really didn't care if the electronics worked. The finish was nice and none of it came off on my hands, everything seemed straight and nothing has fallen off. In short, a fantastic instrument. A word of caution. I get the impression from other reviews that Cecilio's build quality is excellent but their quality control lacking. You might get a lemon. So box it back up and have them ship another. Because I got one with no issues I've been able to detect. Well, okay...the hairs on the bow are a wee bit ragged, but it is a starter bow anyhow, and a nice student-quality carbon fibre is only another thirty bucks or so. The two purchases I made within a few weeks of starting to play were a Snark tuner and a Resonance shoulder rest. The Snark works just fine clipped to the upper bout, which puts it at a comfortable viewing angle. So give it a good inspection, put some decent strings on it, and be prepared to add a few more bits and pieces to pimp the ride a little, and I think it will support the adult beginner for the first few years of learning to play a violin.

This is my first electric violin--I wanted one because I have a beautiful acoustic that sounds absolutely fantastic but is a bit too gloriously loud to be played past my parents' bedtimes, regardless of the use of a mute or not. When I received this instrument, I was thrilled to find it in a decent case with double straps. I tried setting up and playing with it, though, and realized that the bow it comes with, even after a good rosin treatment (using my own good rosin), literally wouldn't make a sound against the strings. No matter--I grabbed my original bow and tried, and YESS!! the instrument sounded GREAT through the headphones and then also through my amp. This violin is also not too heavy, an issue I've heard from several people about electrics. Sure, it's a little heavier than my acoustic, but nothing unmanageable. Since receiving it, I have replaced the bow and then soon after, the strings. They're not unusable, just not what I like to use. (I replaced them with a set of helicores.) Replacing the strings was a little bit of an issue--the fine-tuners are very narrow-pronged and required some forcing open to allow space for my good strings... this eventually led to my decision to replace the whole tailpiece altogether. This might just be a personal preference--I just really, really prefer tailpieces with the fine-tuners built in, so I don't have to deal with the detachable fine-tuners. That said, there's nothing wrong with the tailpiece that comes with the instrument, I'm just a little picky. I LOVE this instrument still, and am really, really happy I got it for the price that I did. It's so worth it, even after the replacements I made, and is exactly what I wanted. It's quiet enough to play all the way to dawn, attractive, not too heavy, and sounds great without any distortion or meddling through both the headphones and the amp. (Of course, it's also lots of fun to play with the output..) I definitely recommend this deal, as long as the mentioned issues are kept in mind. Don't expect PERFECTION from such an affordable price. By the way--mine didn't come with an extra set of violin strings--which is TOTALLY fine by me, since I hated the strings it came with anyway, and instead came with a soft cleaning cloth. Hey, I'm happy with this substitution. :) Also, the headphones that come with it are pretty crappy (not too sturdy), but they get the job done. I'm not complaining--headphones are so easy to replace--so if I tire of the ones it came with, I'll just use others. (They sound fine at the moment.)

The violin is great. It is not absolutely perfect, but for the price you pay, it is amazing. I've played for over 17 years (since I was 5) To start, anything this cheap for any instrument can be expected to be pretty trashy. This violin is so much better than that and is easily worth the $400 it used to be. I hesitated a lot to make this purchase because of some of the negative feedback. Honestly a lot of that negative feedback is coming from 2 types of people: 1: New players who have no idea what they are talking about and just complain when the instrument didn't work out for them easily and perfectly. They complain about the tuners (which are perfectly fine for a brand new instrument which will obviously slip in the beginning). 2. People who legitimately got a bad product. I actually bought this violin 3 years ago and it came broken. The electronics didn't work, but the return policy was fantastic. At first the company sent me new electronics for free. When it still didn't work they offered me a new violin for free, but I decided just to return it then. So yes, you might get a bad product, but the company policies are great and will right any wrongs if you give them the chance before freaking out and writing a bad review. Just a few CONS: -Bridge is actually pretty high, but NOTE: Every violin bridge comes needing work. There is no such thing as a previously fitted bridge from manufacturing. So people need to stop complaining about this too. Sand it down some, fix the action, and it's perfect. -The bow is a little bit heavy and not the highest quality. What did you expect? It works perfectly, is perfect for playing, and for the price justifies any shortcomings and some. -There is some loose piece (probably wood chip) inside the area they hollowed the violin out for the pickup. This rattles if you shake the violin or turn it upside down. So that really bothers my OCD, but still, is not that big an issue to cry. -A bit of the metallic finish at the scroll did get sprayed onto the fingerboard/fretboard (can't remember what it's called, getting my guitar terms mixed in here). Again, it does not influence the playability, but it does represent a sloppy finish. OVERALL The violin is so awesome. It's sound is pretty darn good plugged straight into an amp or through the headphones. Plug it into an effects board, and the tones get too sweet to describe. Sand down the bridge a bit and the action is perfect. Ignore the inner jiggling of the loose wood chip and the sloppy finish and you'll be well on your way to enjoying a fantastic instrument at a better than fantastic price!

Overall, the violin is a wonderful product, but it does have some minor flaws. I ordered mine in pearl white, and the paint coat could of used a bit more help; the scroll was a little messy and there were a few thin cracks in the painting along the fingerboard and neck of the violin and along some of the seams. This was kind of expected (being it is white, they are more noticeable) and it may be from the paint drying or dry conditions. The cracks are thin and not in obvious places so it was not much of an issue, but ordering a darker color may hide these flaws altogether. When the violin arrived, the bridge was not in place, rather on the side and not in any packaging, indicating it may of been set before being shipped. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be, but it was not difficult to put back on (I recommend if you don't know how, take it to a music shop and they will do it for free, along with tuning your instrument). The only issue was when I put the bridge on and started to tune, I noticed the tailpiece rattled. The fine-tuners were not entirely secured and was causing a rather annoying buzz while plucking or playing the instrument. If you look closely at the fine-tuners, there is a second knob that attaches the tuners to the tailpiece. All I had to do was tighten these (it's easier if you remove the tuning screw first and loosen your strings) and screw back in the tuning knob. This fixed the problem, but it took 30-45 minutes to fix the tuners and bridge and tune the violin. The violin is slightly heavier then an acoustic and even though it would seem to be off balance because it is missing the left upper bout, it surprising isn't that noticeable. The headphones that come with it work, but are of very poor quality, and it wouldn't hurt to invest in a nicer $10-$20 pair if you plan to use headphones (in-ear headphones work also and that is what I'm currently using). It uses a 9-volt battery for the battery pack, and comes with one which was very convenient. The rosin isn't what it shows, and actually seems to be pretty nice and comes with a box. The bow is of nice quality and works fine, but I personally will try to find a wooden or fiberglass bow that matches with the violin. I was surprised to see it came with a nice cleaning cloth and cover. The case is comes with a in-bedded box above the scroll for your rosin and other small objects, two bow slots, a Velcro strip to hold your instrument in the case, and a outside zipper for music, although it is too small to fit music in and close it fully without folding it. There isn't much room in the case for your shoulder rest (I suggest using an Everest shoulder rest, they are affordable, lasting and work with my acoustic and electric violins). It does come with a amplifier cable, and the quality seems nice but it ins't significantly long. The pegs, tailpiece and chin-rest are what looks to be ebony, but the fingerboard seems to be painted wood (the fingerboard matches fine and doesn't stand out but looking closely, it does look different from the tailpiece or chin-rest). The Mother of Pearl inlay on the tailpiece and end of the pegs adds a very nice touch to the instrument, but on one of the pegs part of the thin strip of metal surrounding it fell off. It isn't that noticeable and I'm not too worried about it, but it would be nice if the manufacture checked the instrument for minor flaws such as this and not-so-good paint jobs before shipping it off. The violin seemed a little cheaper in quality then my acoustic violin also made by Cecilio but overall I am very satisfied by the product. I was very excited about getting this violin and the shipping was fast (I selected free 5-8 day shipping and it came in 3 days, but different areas may have different shipping times. If you live in a larger community, I suggest choosing free shipping rather then paying $10-$25+ for faster shipping) The sound is great and it is significantly quieter then an acoustic. All in all, it is a great buy and nicely priced for the quality you get. Other then its minor flaws, I love the instrument and recommend it to anyone looking to get a good quality electric violin for a nice price.

If you are already a violinist, and you want a cheap electric for quiet practice and/or easy recording/amplification, go for it-- this is a functional and competent electric that comes with a case and a working bow, a decent case, steel strings, and micro-tuners. The sound is okay, and it's ready to go out of the box. You might want some bridge adjustment, but you might want that with any violin. It's a great deal for an electric. This review is more for people who are looking for a "starter" violin. A solid-body electric violin like this is actually a great way to start/test your interest because it is very quiet, and is easy to integrate with computer-based lessons and recording. It's also cheap, and kind of like the difference between a digital keyboard and a real piano, except for the fact that all the issues of tuning, setup, intonation, playing action, etc, are still very emphatically NOT digital, and very real. One of the worst mistakes well-meaning parents make is buying bad instruments for their kids. They figure "no sense spending money on the good stuff", and so start junior off with some cheap, ugly-sounding, badly-intonated, unplayable, wheezy, buzzy piece of junk. Junior, of course, gets discouraged in her efforts to learn "twinkle twinkle little star" on an out-of-tune, difficult-to-play, bad-sounding instrument, and parent and child alike give up on music until the kid gets to college and starts doing remixes and loop-based stuff on a laptop. Bad instruments are not good beginner instruments. Beginners, more than anyone, need capable and competent instruments. Brilliant musicians can get great sound out of a cardboard box or a Gatorade bottle. They have already done the hard stuff. They know the scales and modes and chords inside and out. They know the instruments and what they sound like and what they are capable of, in a visceral sense. A 10-year-old does not. You can't just hand a child a cheap instrument, a tuner, and an instruction manual, and expect good results. One in a billion savants will be a natural genius, but most people need competent hardware. This is a cheaply-made violin, but it is capable of being a decent one. 99% of the difference between junk instruments and competent instruments is setup, tuning, and playing action. This will never be a world-class heirloom violin, but it can be a competent and adequate violin, if it is properly set up and tuned. Somebody somewhere needs to understand string action, intonation, and tuning.

Before I start, it is best to know that I am a novice to the violin, so fellow beginners may find my review useful, while those that have more experience under their belt may find it over-enthusiastic. With that being said, I shall break down what I find good, 'meh', and bad. The Good: - The case is amazing quality. It is light-weight but sturdy and could probably take a good bit of a beating when toted around. The zippers zip and unzip easily - though, the zipper on the small front pocket needs a bit of force when zipping it back up around the left corner. All the straps feel secure and the rubber grip on the side strap is very comfortable. The interior is a beautiful sky blue velvet material that really makes the red of the mahogany violin pop. - The violin itself is stunning. The photo did not do the color of it any justice. The photo makes it seem more like it is a deep burgundy when it is, in fact, a rich, red mahogany. The fading on the back of the neck definitely adds to its beauty. - EDIT: The strings do just fine. The sound they produce is clean and crisp. I will not be replacing them until they need to be replaced as they do their job right. - The rosin is Cecilio's own brand and they claim it is of high-quality. I was surprised that it was dark rosin as I had heard that light rosin is best for violas and violins while dark was for cellos and bass, but it did it's job perfectly. - DAT PRICE TAG. The MEH: - The bow is alright. I was disappointed to find, like others, that it was fully tightened, which is a big no-no. A few of the hairs were already snapped - I am unsure if that is the norm with new bows or if it was because it was fully tightened. I will most likely replace it in the future with a better quality bow. - The AUX cable seems fine, I don't have an amp to test it and I probably wont use it for a very long time, if ever, but it was nice to have one included in case one planned to use an amp. - The fingerboard does leave a black residue on the fingers when touched. A simple swipe of a thin cloth easily cleans it off. - The battery is nothing special, the usual free battery brand you get with almost anything, but hey, free battery. - EDIT: The pegs definitely need peg dope freshly applied when you get it. My G and E pegs would not stick when I tried to tune the strings. The Bad: - The headphones are the cheapest pieces of crap I have ever had the misfortune of touching. They went straight into the trash. I rather they weren't even included in the set. - There are some imperfections with the paint. There is a drip streak along the concave curve on the back and some build up on the ribs, nose, and scroll. I do not find them to be terribly bad, and I understand that every violin is hand crafted and painted, but others may find the imperfection as a disappointment to the quality. Overall, even with a few bads and some 'meh's, it still gets 5 stars from me, because I do love it. I would definitely recommend this to fellow beginners that wish to learn how to play an electric violin but don't want to blow a hole in their wallets. [I have recieved my tuner and have edited my review as promised. Still love it.]

I had to sell my violin and didn't have much money for a new one. I haven't so much as touched a violin in 6 months and the nightmares and desperation got to be too much for me to handle. This was a great deal within my very limited budget. I was beyond excited to open it today, but the fingerboard is scratched, or rather, scraped. It looks to be just cosmetic, but I was still really disappointed. I'm afraid to send it back though and risk getting one with a defect that affects functionality, so I'm going to see what I can do to fix it. The chin rest also has scratches on it and the pegs were difficult to get positioned. Luckily I still have some peg compound and peg drops, so I used those. Two of the pegs needed peg compound to get them to stick and two needed drops because they were too difficult to turn lol. Of course, I didn't expect to be able to take this violin out of the box and immediately be able to begin playing it, so that stuff's ok. I'm still just mostly focused on the scratch. My apartment's kinda dreary so I try to personalize it as much as possible. I really wanted to put this violin on my stand in my music section, but I don't really want my friends to see it like this - it's kind of embarrassing - and I don't like looking at the scratch either. For now, it's just in my closet :/ As for the case, I really like it! My last case didn't have as soft an inside and didn't have this neat little cover that goes over the violin. It also came with dark rosin in a very nice little case with a cloth. Most often, people will insist that I should use light rosin, but I've always preferred dark, so I was surprised to find dark rosin tucked away in the case compartment especially since it's light rosin that's shown in the picture. I usually use d'addario rosin, but this looks to be of good quality, so I'll keep it for now :) I'll definitely be replacing the strings with d'addario strings though. The bow is just a basic $25 bow and works as you would expect such a bow to work. I'll be using it until I have my bow rehaired, but if you can afford it, then I would suggest buying a better bow especially since the bow I got wasn't loosened when I opened it. For the beginner though, it's a perfectly fine bow to use for a few months. I really haven't played much on it, this is just my first impression and I will most definitely update after I've played for a while. I just wanted to post about the fingerboard asap. I'm posting a couple pictures of the scratch and will post pics of the fix if I can fix it.

So, I haven't played the violin since grade school. And I rent a room in a house, so I was wanted a violin that would be quiet. So, I choose this one... Alas, it's not really "quiet" or silent (even with a mute). Its "quieter" than an acoustic. But still, due to the vibrations, it still gives off its own sound. I was looking for a inexpensive violin. But the other ones I checked out, looked like crap. They had a plastic body, which I am not into. I love the fact that this Cecilio has a wooden body with the mother of earl details. It actually looks much nicer in person, than the pictures. Smells great too (but then I love the smell of fresh cute wood and rosin... call me crazy). And the sound is great (to me anyways, as a beginner). And since it is new, I know that in a few years the sound will mature. (hence another reason I wanted a violin with a wooden body, not plastic). Buying this violin was a big step for me. Since, Electric violins are relatively 'new'. I came across questions and concerns regarding maintenance (etc). You know, the argument about whether or not to get specialized strings since it is electric verses just any steel strings. In the end, I went with, buying from the manufacturer of the actual violin, Cecilio. I found no problems using their basic standard strings. I love the case (and everything that came with it). The rosin is decent and so is the bow. I love the fact that I can carry the case like a backpack, so I can go out and practice out in the nearby park, without feeling awkward about carrying the case. It is very light, that surprised me. Disadvantages: I don't like where the plug in is on the violin. I think it would have be better, if placed on the side. Because it is underneath, the plug-ins come out. Which is irritating. Recommendations: ~ Get Peg mix, to stop the pegs from slipping (which is naturally going to happen from a new violin that hasn't been 'set' yet) ~ Get a Shoulder Pad ~ Mini Amplifier. The one I got was the "Danelectro HoneyTone Amplifier". I felt it sounds pretty decent with my vioin. And perfect, for travelling with me (it can attach to my belt buckle). Looks great too! (I also got the ac adapter to the amp, even though it can operate by battery) ~ mute (helps little) ~ violin stand Personal Preference Additions: ~ A Bow. I plan to upgrade the default bow, to something of more quality. Once again. The bow provided is decent, for beginners to practice on. But at some point you will find, that you will want to upgrade. Ultimately, I am very satisfied with my purchase. I was browsing other sites, to find a starter set plus the violin. And believe it or not, I got EVERYTHING +MORE on Amazon for cheaper, than if I bought one of those bogus starter sets. Plus, all the items I purchased were of better quality. Anyway, if you are hesitant about buying this violin. Don't be. For the price, it is DEFINITELY worth it! In fact, it's quality (in my opinion) would put it on a higher price range. Plus, this violin will mature with you, as you play. Hopefully, my review helps. ;-) Good luck! P.S. Soaap are a great provider. Thanks you guys!
