Style: easy cleaning
After having owned countless numbers of litter boxes over the years, this is without question the absolute best one I've ever owned. Yes, that is high praise. Particularly if you consider that I was very hesitant initially to purchase this sifting cat box due to the wealth of mediocre reviews submitted here on Amazon. In my previous experiences, I generally could count on the reviews from loyal Amazonians (whether favourable or unfavourable) to be very consistent with my own experience. So in spite of such reservations, and somewhat against my better judgement, I decided to order it anyway. For about $60, I figured that if it didn't meet my needs, at least the investment wouldn't be too extreme. I had also planned to try the Litter Spinner as well. If the SmartSift proved unsatisfactory, then I'd turn to the Litter Spinner in my quest for kitty litter purr-vana. In the past, all of the new and innovative boxes I've used ended up being replaced by the obligatory cat pan that required constant and tedious cleaning. I was looking for a better, more clever solution. One previous purchase included the Omega Paw box that you roll (tip the box over) to sift the waste from the clean litter. It lasted about 1 week before I just started using it as a regular litter box. Why? The clips holding the sides failed, and the design seemed poor in overall quality - such that when I rolled the box, litter would spill everywhere. And the actual act of physically rolling the entire box was just awkward and cumbersome. I had also purchased an earlier iteration of the Litter Robot. At first, it seemed like the Holy Grail of litter boxes. But it wasn't long before I encountered electronic gremlins. While walking by it I would suddenly notice an array of flashing lights that reflected annoying and all-to-common technical glitches......which invariably led to lots of frustration and troubleshooting. A common one involved the drum stopping half way through it's cycle. Or issues related to the sensitivity of the step entering the drum. And these weren't the only problems. The waste bin was small and needed to be emptied frequently. I remember at the time wishing for a manual version of the Litter Robot that allowed me to rotate the drum by hand (cue foreshadowing music) to completely bypass any temperamental electronics. In effect, I was left wishing for NO circuit board, manual control, and a $300 reduction in price. Of note, apparently, the newer versions are more reliable. But I don't want to risk gambling more than $400 again to find out. When the financial loss was factored in, it ended up being the worst litter box I'd ever purchased. Ultimately, I ended up reverting back to the tried-and-true litter pan. Next, I tried the CatGenie. I was once again hopeful that this would be the one. It was clever and innovative. But my cats simply would not go near the thing, even after painstakingly and carefully exhausting all of the suggestions the manual offers to coax cats into adopting it. On top of that, I found that when transferring hard waste from the regular cat box into the pan of the CatGenie and running a cycle, the filtering shovel would automatically shake to remove excess plastic litter before dumping (like it's designed to do), but then shake the waste off the shovel as well, and back into the pan where it would eventually be heated during the drying cycle and baked into a smelly Easy-Bake-Oven-like brownie. These issues and the fact that the consumables were too costly, had me unfortunately, once again, reverting back to a simple cat pan. So after reading through all the reviews on this site, I wanted to make sure that I was well equipped, and well prepared to try this litter. If it didn't work, I wanted to make sure that it was due to the box itself and not anything related to the quality of the litter. So based on suggestions, I made sure to buy some Exquicat Crystal litter, as well as some Arm and Hammer Clump and Seal, and threw in some Precious Cat for good measure, as these products seemed to clump well according to claims on Amazon. My regular litter is Odour Buster clumping clay cat litter and is fantastic. Still, I wanted to have some options available should troubleshooting be necessary. My experience? I have the litter in my basement near the washer and dryer. First of all, I never use the plastic bag in the little pan itself - even though it's recommended in the instructions. As many have suggested in these reviews - the box seems to work much better without it. I only use a plastic liner in the waste container. I also removed the cat door as well as the filter at the top of the box to allow more light to enter inside, thus more closely mimicking the openness of the cat box my cats are more accustomed to. The door and the filter just seemed completely unnecessary to me. Removing them also allowed me to monitor the litter level better which made it easier to replenish the pan with fresh litter when needed. I love the fact that I can simply free up the handle and SLOWLY rotate it back and forth to sift. Nice and simple. Just move the handle, not the entire box. Brilliant. Just make sure to do it slowly, and to NOT overfill the litter pan. Otherwise - you will waste fresh litter when you sift. The quality also seems very good. When assembling the product, make sure to insert the arm into it's slot with some deliberate effort to help prevent the arm from loosening later during use. I find this box to be easy to disassemble and clean. Everything just seems well thought out. It's hard to believe I'm saying this, but I actually enjoy sifting the litter now. The box also stays cleaner longer and my cats seem to like it - they acclimated to it very quickly. I have used the Odour Buster litter exclusively (there has been no need to try the other litters) and it works well. Occasionally there are clumps that hold a bit more tenaciously to the bottom or side of the pan (as described in other reviews) but I use my litter scooper to quickly dislodge them when this happens. It's quick and painless. And to be honest - such sticking has always been a common occurrence with any litter pan I've owned - so the SmartSift is no different here. I also love that the waste bin is large. I was thinking that another SmartSift might be necessary with 3 cats, but I'm finding that I can easily get by with only one. I empty the bin each week and toss out the waste with my regular garbage. I'm also pleased that the smell is virtually non-existent. Granted, this might have something to do with the litter choice, but the reasonably well-sealed bin certainly seems to help in this regard.. A big surprise for me is how much money I anticipate saving over the long-term. So far, it's looks like I'll be cutting my litter costs by 2/3rds. I was wasting so much litter previously. This is definitely, an extra, unanticipated perk. Overall, as you can tell, I'm very pleased. So pleased that I've purchased another one as a gift for a friend who has 2 cats. What would make the SmartSift even better? It would be great if it was offered in a slightly larger version that allowed one to add more than the normal 3" or so of litter to the pan. With that said - I've noticed that many reviewers here have commented about how inconveniently large this box is. Ironically, many reviewers have also complained that the interior litter pan is too small. Changing the size of the pan would likely increase the overall size of the box too. In addition, some cat pans are now available with slick, non-stick surfaces and this would make the waste fall even better into the lower bin. I see this as the single most important simple improvement that could be made to enhance it's functionality. Aside from that, there is really little to criticize here based on my experience. If any issues appear, I'll make sure to update this review. *Update* - April 8, 2017. I have now owned the SmartSift for 3 months and still absolutely love this litter box. Is it perfect? No. But neither is a brand new Honda Civic. Yet, just like a Civic works so much better and represents such a large technical leap in convenience, efficiency, and functionality next to a horse-drawn chuck-wagon - it's hard to resist feeling like this product represents a revolution in litter boxes. It's my hope that the design will see incremental improvements over time to address what I view as minor flaws in an otherwise excellent time and labor-saving litter pan. My suggestions for improvement outlined above - in my original review - still stand. Overall though, I'm very happy with this product. And so is my friend who I purchased another one for - also mentioned in my original review. Highlights? Well, I've just run out of my first bag of litter a few days ago, so I effectively reduced my litter use from one 15 kg (33 lb) bag per month, to one every three months using this box. Considering the reasonable up-front cost of this product - I have saved almost enough in 3 months in litter alone, to cover the initial expense of the box. Not only does the SmartSift save time and effort, it's also saving me money, and reducing waste.

LONG OVERDUE EDIT! I don't recommend this after all. My cats urine kept leaking to the bottom and the litter started to clump all the time, and yes I use the good litter. I got not take all the extra work so I get rid of it and broke down and bought the litter robot 4. Best thing I did, I am not scoop free. I'm not trying to promote any products I'm just telling you my experience and what I choose to do because I do not want to scoop little anymore. I love this litter box! Absolutely love it! I am glad I did not listen to the negative reviews. I know I have only had it for a week but my life has been so much easier. I no longer step on cat little tha5 has been tracked on my floor, I have not had to sift through cat pee and poop, My life is just easier with this litter box. I do not use the liner in the litter pan, only in the bottom bin. My cats will just rip it up, if your cat is declared then definitely use the liner in the pan. As of now I have no complaints. I did read a lot of reviews how the handle gave out, I can kinda see that happening due to the plastic not feeling like a high grade plastic, but for me I will just buy another one. I also only fill the litter to the litter line and I use the handle gently, hopefully this will keep working at least a year. I change the liner bags every 3-4 days for my 2 cats, I'm also going to try regular garbage bags, probably less money to spend since I choose to change it so often. The only thing extra I had to do is when sometimes a small cat pee clump will get stuck, I just get my cat scooper and loosen it and dump it through the sifter, no big deal, Alot better than having to sift through cat litter every day. When you own cats you can not expect to do nothing to keep their area clean. Also make sure you use good clumping cat litter, if you use the cheap stuff your litter will not clump properly and you will just have broken up urine that sifted back into your pan. I use Tidy cat, the next one I buy, I will get the extra clumping cat litter and see if that solves the occasional cat pee clump left behind. Since I do not use the liners I'm guessing I will wipe the pan out ebery 2 weeks to once a month. I will update my review in one month. For now I am a happy cat owner again, I love this litter box, if your thinking of buying it, go for it, you will be happy you did.

Style: easy cleaning
So I purchased up to 5 of these units over the last 5 years. I have many cats and they loved these boxes. The last one I bought about 3 years ago. My cats do urinate in the grates which are hard to clean. That seems to be the only downfall. The parts are wearing out now ant I have broken a couple of handles. I have had to scavenge parts off of 2 of my older units to keep 3 of them going. I finally found a phone number for Hagan Group whom make the boxes. I spoke to a nice man there and explained what I needed for the boxes. He was not sure if the litter pan comes with the grate and put me on hold. In less than 3-4 minutes he came back and said they did. I was excited that I could get the grates but not as excited because I had to order pans too. In 4-5 days I had my items (fast service) I opened the box expecting to find pans with grates but I was so disappointed (NO GRATES!!). I called this nice man back and explained to him if there were no grates I did not want the pans. He offered me to return them, I told him I wanted the grates! He said he would look into it and call me back. 1 week later no phone call. I called again, spoke to the same man who again said I will call you back. No phone calls yet. I will not buy this product again just because of this man! It sucks because I like these boxes. Now I am in search of another litter box that is easy to clean :(

HACK TO FIX ISSUE FOR FRONT-PEEING CATS INCLUDED! I bought this litter box to help me manage the frequent cleanings (went back and forth between these "manual" sifting litter boxes and automatic ones). I wasn't ready to invest in an automatic one, so this was my choice. It wasn't difficult to put together and I was glad that the arm & hammer litter box liners fit over both the litter pan and the collection bin in the bottom. My cats don't like doors on their litter boxes, so I removed that right away (easy to do). After a few weeks of my cats using it (which they took to quickly), I realized a design flaw...when my cats pee at the front of the litter box, their pee goes through the sifter. This causes a massive clump to form within the sifting section. Each time I had to take of the lid of the litter box, take off the sifter and manually scoop it out, then put it all back together. I got fed up with this pretty fast and realized the solution seemed pretty simple...the sifter just needs a cover for when you're not cleaning the box (so no pee can get through). So here's what I did (with photos attached)... I bought a cheapo trash bin that's larger than the dimensions of the sifter, cut the trash can to line up with the sifter (traced the outline on the bin and cut with a box cutter and heavy-duty scissors), then added strong magnets on both the sifter (on the inside of the sifter), then added magnets on this plastic cover to line-up with the magnets on the sifter. So what I do NOW is, when I clean the litter box, I can easily take out this shield, I lay it on the litter mat temporarily, THEN SIFT. After I'm done, I put the shield back inside the litter box, and slide it down vertically onto the front of the sifter (just to get as close as possible). The magnets are quite strong so it snaps right in place. So far this has made cleanings SO MUCH EASIER. I've seen this same issue come up for automatic sifters as well and I'm surprised that this is such a common design flaw. With this alteration, I very much like this litter box and my cats do as well! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ UPDATE: 09/18/2021!!!!!!!!!!! (decreasing from 4 to 3 stars) After using this litter box for months now, we started noticing an increasing cat urine smell coming from the litter box area. Our solution was to just keep up with cleaning it out more, however the strong smell lingered. After shampooing the carpets, checking the area for pee spots, we realized it was the freshly-scooped litter box. Our one cat aims high when he pees, which usually means it hits the sides of the litter box. I thought I accounted for this enough but apparently not. What happened was that over time, my cats pee was dripping down the inside of the litter box, under the swinging litter pan, and dripping down into the bottom bin. When I actually took a look at everything, taken apart, under the pan was covered in dried pee. On top of that, there was pee dried around the inside edges of the litter box as well. I've added photos for reference. So, even with a "clean" litter box, it was still quite dirty as it was covered in dried cat pee. We are now throwing this out because we will just not be able to use this again.

Style: easy cleaning
I had reservations about buying this litter box because I saw a lot of complaints about it leaking pee. I have a cat that stands to pee and has managed to pee outside of every other litter box I've gotten her (except for the Catit Jumbo hooded litter box). So I was very scared that this would be a problem but I haven't had any issues. I always make sure to close the little drawer on the bottom to prevent leaking and I leave a trash bag under the box in case it ever does leak (which is more out of habit because I typically have them taped to the walls and everything as a safety net for my cat that stands to pee) but I haven't had any issues with leaking. I was also concerned with it being too small because I have a maine coon and a Siberian that are each 15lbs, but they use it without any problems. I saw the reviews that said it was large but I was more surprised with how high the box was off the ground. I have a senior cat that had difficulty getting in it but I put a plastic stool in front and he gets in and out without a problem now. It also does a better job of containing litter scatter than other litter boxes I've had. I also can't say enough about the liners and how easy it is to clean. I used traditional liners before and my cats didn't do so well with them but they do fine with this system. They are difficult to buy through prime and fairly pricey though, so keep that in mind. I love being able to turn the handle every day, have the clumps isolated in the waste bin, and not have to stick my head down there and sift through anything. I also think because of that is smells less than my traditional litter boxes. I also saw some reviews that said the grate was an issue in the sifting mechanism. While occasionally a tiny piece here and there will get stuck, it's never actually hindered the functionality of the design. I make sure that I don't sift it right after my cat uses it because it doesn't give the litter time to clump/dry out any moisture. I think that it's the moisture that causes it to adhere to the grate. I also move the handle very slowly so it doesn't break the clumps apart and cause it to stick. Lastly, I love that I use half the litter I was using. It takes a half a box of the 15 lb. lightweight clump & seal cat litter to fill it to the line. I was using an entire box every time I changed litter before. I have 3 cats and change the bags out every week and I wash & spray it down with an enzyme cleaner monthly and it keeps it smelling fresh and the grate working optimally.

Style: easy cleaning
I did a lot of research before buying my latest litter box. I felt this one would work for me and my cat. Unfortunately, it's not all pull & dump as stated. I have a mature, small, female cat. I was looking for help with litter scatter, odor control, and, of course, ease of cleaning. I have back issues & arthritis so I'm always looking for ways to make life a little less painful. This box seemed like it was really going to help; no crazy motorized gadget to get caught in a noisy loop at night or weird washable toilet thing to deal with. My thoughts were that manual just might be better. Litter control: I have to say, I am thrilled at how much the litter scatter was reduced after we set this box up. I would have to sweep 3 times a day or more with other boxes to keep it under control. Now, I sweep maybe once a day, sometimes every other day. The inside 'step' seems to really help catch the litter. Odor control: This... not so great. The drawer under the box is supposed to help minimize odor, but realistically, if you keep more than 3 days of urine and poo clumps in there, it is going to start to smell. The carbon filter on top is pretty much useless. My guess is that it's just another accessory for an owner to waste money on. The limited amount of litter one can put in this box can also make it difficult for your cat to cover their business up, especially if they only potty on one side or pile litter up in one area. Ease of cleaning: Not so easy. My cat pees in the front left corner on the sifting grate. This means that there is wet clumpy litter in between the slats, which are very difficult to clean. You have to take the locked, attached-in-the-back lid off to do a decent job. Since my cat pees in the corner this also make a big clump of litter that doesn't just dump in the box. It has to be broken down to fit properly. To prevent this, I'd have to sift every time she pees. Not possible since I work during the day. When sifting, the inner tray tilts towards the front of the box. The unclumped litter flows through the grate into a receptacle, while the clumped litter falls into the waste drawer. This is how its SUPPOSED to work. When it works, it is very nice. But, it doesn't work that way most of the time. Remember that blocked grate with pee clumps? It HAS to be cleaned well. Otherwise, only a small amount of the litter will be able to get through the grate. The remainder will dump into the waste drawer wasting a lot of usable litter. If you have a cat that uses the back of the box, this may be a good option for you. The waste drawer might hold 2 weeks of waste, but I think it would be really full, not to mention stinky I'd you let it go that long. Taking it apart to clean and change the inner liner when needed is a bear. You must unlock it, unclip the attachment in the back (and manage to keep it unattached), then juggle the very large lid while getting the pull lever out of it and not relocking the back attachment. It's not very fun when you have a bad back or other reason to want something that's easy & convenient to clean. In my experience this litter box is neither of those two things. I'm probably going to remove the grate and just scoop it. I just hate that I paid such a high price for a hooded litter box.

Style: easy cleaning
I hesitated to buy this because of the poor reviews, but it sounded so good, I thought I would gamble and try it anyway. I have just started using this SmartSift littler box. By reading the good and bad reviews, I learned some things without having to learn the hard way. I am posting this because I think the litter box is getting a bad rap from some users.. THE BOX IS MADE UP OF AS DECENT MATERIAL AS ANY LITTER BOX. UPDATE: This morning I took out the litter pan and "top" sifting clean litter box to wash it out with a hose. This could be done in a bathtub. When I reinserted it, the litter pan did not lock in place properly and would swing although I had locked the handle. A mystery to me. I fiddled with how I had inserted it in the grooves made for the pan to be inserted in, made sure the handle was firmly in place, and then the litter pan locked in place. DON'T GIVE UP SO EASILY WITH MINOR PROBLEMS. FINE OUT WHY SOMETHING DOESN'T WORK AND TRY TO FIX IT. THE BOX IS WORTH IT AND MY CATS LOVE IT! 1. Ignore the pictures that come with the box to help you assemble it. They are useless and it is simple to put together because there are only 5 parts: top, bottom, inside litter pan, top container box (attached to litter pan but removable), a handle for dumping the pan, and the bottom collection pan. 2. It is large but only huge in a small place. It works well in our roomy laundry/pantry/storage room. 3. After assembly, at first, leave the swinging door off until your cat(s) get used to the box. 4. It has been made clear that you should rotate the handle very slowly. In the beginning, you should look inside the box as you rotate the litter pan (may need a flashlight) to see what is going on when you pull the lever forward. You will find that the clean littler sifts into the top container (not allowing clumps to enter). While it is being sifted, wait until all the "clean" liter is in the box. However, if the litter stops flowing into the top container, YOU HAVE PUT TOO MUCH LITER PAN FOR THE COLLECTING CONTAINER TO HOLD, so you have no choice but to waste some in the bottom box with the clumps. Of course, use less. 5. After you have collected the clean litter in the top container, pull the lever all the way to the FRONT to dump any remaining clumps (some will have already tumbled down as you sift but they land in the bottom box). Then push the lever all the way to the BACK and the litter being held in the top container will now flow freely back into the litter pan. BE SURE TO "LOCK" THE HANDLE or a large cat can hit the top container when exiting and it will cause the litter pan to dislodge. 6. The box will take almost any size cat, but a very large cat (maybe 18 lbs or so) takes up so much room that it cannot help but do its poop business on the side of the pan, sometimes creating a mess. The box is not suitable for truly large cats unless you are willing to put up with some messy problems at times. My cat is 14 lbs and I have no trouble. 7. In the reviews, I have picked up that Arm & Hammer's SLIDE cat litter will eliminate "stuff" sticking to the side or bottom of the liter pan. I have just purchased some and cannot vouch for this statement, although the box swears stuff will slide off and not stick.. 8. Some people, including Hagen, suggests several methods to get the cats to use it. You know your cats, so use your own judgement. As for my two cats, which I know sounds super silly, but I talk to my cats, and I bragged on their new litter box. I went on an on and was glad nobody could hear me. However, I didn't push them to use it, just removed the two boxes they were using, and they immediately started to use the new one. I HOPE THIS HELPS THE UNDECIDED ONES DUE TO BAD REVIEWS. Style: easy cleaning
This seemed like a great idea. I wanted to be able to quickly handle the litterbox and minimize my actual touching of used litter (because, be honest, that's gross). Unfortunately, this litterbox was problematic from the start. First, is the size. I mean, it's huge. Huge. I don't know where a cat owner is expected to keep such a monstrosity but it won't fit under the bathroom sink, or most anywhere else for that matter. Ok, so I have to have it in a closet that I now have to leave open all the time. If that was the only problem, I could have lived with it; but it wasn't. I'm so sick of these products that you buy and then in order to keep using you have to buy more products (I'm talking about the liners). On top of that, these liners are crap. The litter gets caught in the folds when you rotate to sift, so how the hell is that supposed to work?? I had to be reaching in and shaking lose the litter; remember how I said I wanted to minimize my actual touching of the litter? Yeah, didn't happen; instead I am touching it more directly than just with a scooper. So, I thought that maybe the think could work without the liner for the actual litterbox part. And it does; partially. The litter will be sifted and the poop will fall into the bottom. But the urine sticks to the litterbox, so you have to scoop it loose to get it to fall in the bottom. What's the point of a litter sifting cat pan that still needs scooped? Again, possibly something I could work around, but now I'm getting frustrated. This is three strikes, but I'm gonna try anyway because the d*mn thing cost a good bit. So what was the last straw? When my cat, in distress, had to pee on the floor because the handle-hook that's supposed to keep the litterbox locked in place had gotten loose during use so the litterbox swing up a bit during the last cat use, blocking the door, preventing the kitty from being able to get inside. Oh, and icing on the cake, the thing does nothing for odors. Nothing. Not a thing. There's so much space between the sides of the clear flap and the wall that plenty of odor can get out. And if you're thinking 'I can sift the used litter into the bottom drawer and only change it every other day' or anything along those lines; you'll need a ton of febreeze or scented candles because that drawer has absolutely no odor stopping power at all. So I've detailed my experience. I have two kitties and they're really great about switching to new types of litter boxes, never having mistakes on the floor. So when my kitty had to pee on the floor (happened while I was witness) and was in such distress about doing it, I was done with this thing when I realized it was because the litterbox essentially locked them out.
