I don't know why everything plastic like this has to smell. It has a weird smell like air freshener and it didn't dissapate even after a few days. My cat has asthmas and so do I so I didn't like this. After opening it, I did as the instructions say and I put something heavy on both of them to flatten them for over 2 days. It helped to a degree. Then I used the hair dryer on high on both of them and that did the trick in taking out the creases and flattening them. So I recommend doing both of those in that order. I am going to go buy two more for the other litter box I have in a different area of the house. I use a cat litter that has large grains and tracks like I've never seen in my life. It's completely dust free and unscented so that's why I'm sticking with it for my boy's asthma. These mats could be bigger but they work well and so far the litter tracks are cut way down. I don't know about cleaning yet as I haven't had to, I've only had it for a few days. I'll update after awhile. But so far it's exactly what I was looking for and my cats don't mind stepping on it, seems soft on the paws and to the touch. I just want to add that there are not any rubber or anti slip materials underneath these. So watch your step if you have it in a high traffic area. The mat was delivered quickly and looks just like the advertised photos. It did come folded up so it took a few days to lay flat and some heavy objects to get the creases out. It's super squishy and fits perfectly under the litter box. The hexagon openings are big enough to catch any tracked litter and the large envelope opening is plenty wide to dump the excess litter. The material is really easy to wipe clean but the hexagon shapes makes it time consuming to clean all the openings. Of all the solutions to keep the cat's litter in their area, this has been the best. Even if they wet on it, the urine stays trapped. You need to be a little crafty to get it outside or wherever you plan on dumping it, so you don't spill, but it's not too hard to figure out. If you keep your litter box clean, then not a big issue. If you hope someone else in your house will do it, then you have the same trust issues I have and live in a state of disappointment. ... show more

I use blue crystal non-clumping cat litter (silica gel crystals). If you use it, you know the crystal chunks can get big. They also hurt like a m*****f***** when you step on them. Wanted a litter mat that would trap the crystals which my cat loves to track all over. Since the mat arrived, not a single crystal has found its way onto the carpets (or anywhere else in the house really). Size is perfect - got about 8 inches sticking out in front, the rest is underneath the litter box. Mat is super soft. Had no issues with the mat smelling nor getting the folds out (weighed them down with the litter box and then rotated which side of the mat is sticking out). ... show more

We bought two of these mats. As mentioned by other reviewers, neither of them ever laid completely flat due to the deep creases from the manufacturer folding them for packaging. The best I can say about the mats is that they were better than nothing. But even with the mats, we still had some litter tracking. After some online research we found out that other feline owners had discovered ANIMAL BEDDING. It is made of wood sawdust tightly compressed into pellets. We promptly bought two forty-pound bags at the local feed store for $16.69 with state tax. For a couple of days we mixed the two litter-types so our cats might more comfortably adjust to the change. No problem! They didn't skip a beat. We happily discovered that the pellets are every bit as absorbent as clay or fancy cat litter and now our cats track NEAR ZERO particles when they leave their litter boxes. We found by using a better litter, we didn't need the litter trapping mats anymore. Oh, by the way, the animal bedding pellets costs a lot less than the fancy cat litter. We have two good-sized indoor cats and one 40 pound bag last us about 2 months of maintaining two litter boxes, one on the deck and in the laundry room. ... show more

I've four of this brand mats in two different sizes. Do you still need to sweep even with the mats? I feel like that's a duh yes it's litter and NOTHING will 100% stop the spread. Do I have to sweep my cat rm daily nope! I could do it once a wk when I mop but even then I could probably still get a few more days. I use Worlds Best Litter and I have dark floors. The litter spread would/does show easily when it's time to clean the mats. That's not saying it doesn't do a great job! The mats catch 90% or more percent in my house. I have multiple boxes in a 3 different rms and so I feel like I can say how well it catches the tracking. Make sure you get the right size for your box/cat. If you have a cat that a litter kicker then order a size up or even two size. I use hot water amd dawn dishsoap to clean the mats in my bathtub and let them air dry which doesn't make long. You can vacuum, sweep or dump the litter that's caught in the mats. ... show more
