I settled on this after a few years trying different litters
Size: 18 lb
I wanted to give a very detailed review because I tried using reviews to choose litter, but it was very hard to do because often the reviews vary wildly in describing the same qualities of the same litter. I’ll start by saying I’ve tried Fresh Step, Tidy Cats, Arm & Hammer, Pretty Litter, and various other silicone litters before settling on this one. I have one short haired, older female kitty who has one litter box. For a long time, I used Arm & Hammer clump and seal litter. I didn’t hate it, but felt like it didn’t clump as well as it could and I wanted to try something else. So I switched to Pretty Litter for a while because I liked the color changing aspect. However, I started to notice that it wasn’t lasting as long as it was supposed to and I didn’t want to keep paying that much for something that wasn’t doing what it was supposed to. I liked the no-clump aspect, but it seemed to irritate my kitty’s toes. She was constantly picking stuff off the hair on her feet (and she doesn’t have long hair at all) and I felt like it tracked a lot. I then tried a few different silicone litters, but the more affordable ones were too hard to find regularly (ie often out of stock). So after all that experimentation, I had a few qualities I was looking for: - low dust - low tracking (I live in a very small apartment where there aren’t many steps between the litter box and the couch or the bed) - low odor - hopefully non-clumping I ended up compromising on the non-clumping part, because this litter meets my other wish list items so well. - Dust: I haven’t tried some of the “natural” litters like the ones made from corn, wheat, etc. so I can’t speak for those. But otherwise I have used many of the popular litters and I have concluded that there probably isn’t a 100% dust free litter. I think it’s just the nature of such a product. However, this has less dust than any other litter I can think of and I love that. - Tracking: again, not sure if there exists a 100% no track litter. But in my experience, this tracks the least. I did notice after I was sick for a couple weeks (still scooping ofc but not as worried about cleaning up the litter on the floor) it did start to get a little spread out and ground into the carpet. But as long as I was vacuuming regularly I barely noticed any tracking. - Odor: this and the low tracking were probably the main selling points for me. I’ve honestly forgotten to scoop the box a couple times because I. NEVER. SMELL IT! Even when scooping it, it hardly smells. Only towards the end of its life cycle does it tend to stink much, but again, that’s only when scooping. And I use the scent free one! I hate the smell of scented cat litter (it gets too strong for me and in my head it’s a “cover up” smell, like spraying perfume on a dirty shirt or pants lol) I think this is the best quality of this litter. If odor is your sticking point, I’d definitely recommend trying this. - Clumping: as I said above, this was what I compromised on. **This IS a clumping litter.** But it clumps EXTREMELY well. Honestly sometimes it’s a bit like scooping a rock. If it’s a larger clump sometimes I have to put in some effort to break it in half. So because of that and how great the other qualities are, I was fine with switching back to a clumping litter. I have a Litter Genie so it’s not too much of an inconvenience. Actually, my only (very minor) complaint would be that the clumps get too heavy to fill the Litter Genie bag as full as I’d like, but it doesn’t bother me that much. - Price: I haven’t sat down and figured out how this one compares to the others in terms of price, but it’s at least comparable and I think very reasonable for the quality of what you get. The 18lb bag is a little more than enough to fill up the litter box, and has been lasting about a month. So glad I decided to try Dr. Elsey’s! I hope this review is helpful to anyone else shopping around for litter like I was. ... show more

The best litter EVER!!!! Get it, you'll love it!!! It's heavy, but worth it!!!
Size: 18 lb
This is THE BEST cat litter I've found in 30 years of having cats. I've tried them all! The clumping, the non clumping, the natural, the silica crystals. Trust me, you just go nose blind! This litter right here Dr. Elsey's Ultra is absolutely THE BEST for odor control! I had a friend visit whom I hadn't seen in over 10 years, and he said he'd never know I had cats had he not seen them. I have an open floor plan, the litter boxes are in one corner of the large open house. We actually have 2 litter boxes because there are 3 cats and for now 2 is fine, that's what we have room for in that one corner available for litter boxes. No odor. It is absolutely lower dust than all the other litters I've tried! Low tracking! It wouldn't track in my house at all except my new kitten likes to play in the lower side box and kick litter out in all directions. Before she came along, there were no issues with litter tracking anywhere. I had a small rug under the bigger box and that was it. Very nice. It's definitely harder clumping than any other litter I've used. Makes scooping really easy. I waste less litter because I can do the extra shake or two with the scoop to get the loose litter out and not have to worry about the clump breaking apart. I seriously wish I'd have found this litter so many years ago. I found it almost 2 years ago I think. And I won't use anything else as long as they're making this. I usually get the 40 lb bags, I did get the 18 once when money was a bit tight. I also buy from other sources when it's on sale. I know my delivery guys don't like bringing it but I'm so glad to get it delivered! Sometimes there are free food samples or free collars in sealed bags in the litter bag. My cats enjoy these food sample treats, shhhh don't tell them it's not really treats lol. This litter just really is amazing! I highly recommend it! If you've got tub from one of the other brands, keep it to put this litter in. Otherwise, I keep my bags in a closet so the kitten doesn't dig to the bottom throwing all the litter onto the floor. Ask me how I know that's what happens lol. Very good litter. Very good price for what you get and how well it works and how long it lasts. I recommend it to everyone I know, and even people I don't know. All the cat groups, I mention this litter. It really is good. You won't regret it. ... show more

Why isn't there a 6 star option?
Size: 18 lb
Cat litter. It's dusty. Dusty and gray. Also, granular. Decidedly less so upon being used, it forms a foul smelling hillock that waits for the low-man-on-the-totem-pole of the household to reluctantly scoop it. It smells of...cat litter? What else does cat litter smell like? I dunno. It's the medium in which we expect our pet cats to expel their waste. That's it. That's about as much brain real estate each of us has devoted to the rousing topic of "Cat litter" and deservedly so. Cat litter is one of those things that is so inconsequential in our lives, so banal of a product, that any amount of conversational effort devoted to it is too much. That is, when it works. And yet...here I am reviewing it on Amazon. In addition to having a decent (boring?) enough of a life that I can devote time to reviewing cat litter on Amazon, I have two cats. One is a white flame-point ragdoll cat that is the reincarnation of Steve McQueen that'll befriend a Rottweiler within minutes of meeting (Tucker) and the other is a painfully shy siamese that closely resembles a raccoon that swallowed a medicine ball - we call her "the basement troll" for her penchant for cool, dark spaces and cardboard boxes. Formally, however, she is known as "Bailey". While Bailey is extremely sweet, she's very nervous and scares extremely easily. She hides in the basement whenever anyone comes to the house and hates being carried. While Tucker is as cool as Billy Dee Williams and makes the Dos Equis guy look like Don Knotts, Bailey is more sensitive than an open cavity. As a result, she's suffered from chronic bladder infections for years. While both of these cats are polar opposites of each other, both had one thing in common - they both had a penchant for leaving tootsie rolls just outside of their litterbox. In addition, because Bailey suffered from routine bladder infections, we were starting to see rust-colored spots in not-so-inconspicous places around the house (essentially every carpeted corner in the house). While I certainly don't condone the tendency for families to throw their hands up in the air in exasperation and send their pet cat straight to the kennel when this happens, I can understand how it happens. If only there was some sort of miracle product that keeps such tragedies from happening... Yes, Precious Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter is that product. How incredible is this stuff you ask? I'll tell you: it's so damned good that here I am, semi-supine in my cozy bed on the last Tuesday before Christmas and instead of figuring out how I'm going to get every last gift that I'm obligated to buy, I'm reviewing this cat litter. That's how f---ing great this stuff is. It's simply sublime - transcendent even. In a world where every product is so over-hyped, brightly packaged, and intrusively advertised on every screen in your house and yet is woefully and ultimately ineffectual, here's a product that's the equivalent of a circa 1974 George Foreman right cross packaged in a manila envelope. Before I continue, I would just like to say that this isn't one of those inane, dipsh-t "ironic" reviews that self-entertained hipsters write in the hopes that they get recognized by Buzzfeed - I'm as sincere as I can be - this is the Alpha and Omega of cat litter. With that out of the way, the first thing that comes to mind about this litter is that it saved our carpets, piles of dirty laundry and sanity from Bailey's sketchy bladder. Cynical as I am, I was fully expecting the worst for Bailey - her bladder infections were a more consistent recidivist than Tyron Biggums and there was no end in sight. Like seemingly all pet ailments, I was fully expecting Bailey's treatment to be outrageously expensive. Thankfully, we're blessed with a vet that had long since paid off her exorbitant student loans and rather than recommend more "tests" (i.e. $$$$), she recommended Precious Cat Litter. Always in favor of the cheapest, easiest, and simplest answer, I happily ordered it from Amazon. I replaced all the litter in the house (Tidy Cat) with the Precious Cat stuff and was ill prepared with how fast I saw results. Literally minutes later, there were fresh clumps in one of the litter boxes. Both cats took to this stuff like a fish to water. No longer do we find "surprises" propped up against the litter box when it comes time to clean them out and that's pretty damned nice. So, I give this stuff an easy 5 stars right off the bat due to its ability to coax Bailey to start using the litter box again, and thereby curing her bladder infections for good. That alone makes this a 5 star product. It fully exceeded my expectations. What really makes this stuff special is the comorbidity of the following: 1.) Cost - This litter is significantly cheaper than the major brands you see in large jugs at just about every supermarket in the country. For the longest time I couldn't understand why cat litter was so expensive - I mean it's not like clay and "proprietary scent crystals" are rare earth metals. Precious Cat Litter brings sanity back to cat litter pricing. It's also pretty sweet that a 40lb. bag of this stuff ships with free 2 day shipping with an Amazon Prime subscription. Thus, the value proposition is off the charts with this litter. 2.) Scent - There is none. No, I'm not just talking about the actual scent of the litter - I'm talking about after it's been used. Bullsh-t you say? I can't blame you - every friggin' litter I've ever used that advertised such a claim has failed miserably. Cat urine is so putrid and so powerful that it causes many landlords to refuse cats to be present on their premises. I wish I had known about this product years ago because it effectively renders this objection null and void. The way this stuff absolutely smothers cat urine smells is positively game-changing. We have four cat litter boxes in our house - one is in the upstairs laundry room right at the top of the stairs. Normal cat litters would assault the olfactory senses of any poor soul unfortunate enough to walk upstairs in our house. Not so with this litter. It's ability to c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y void the stench of cat urine is truly other-worldly, maybe even a little bit spooky. Absolutely nothing should work this well at canceling out one of the worst smells known to the human race. Thus, I have no other choice than to conclude that simple logic dictates that Beelzebub himself MUST be involved somewhere in the supply chain of this product - there's no way humans alone have unlocked the superpower of neutering cat urine funk. However, this raises a philosophical question unto itself - how bad could the devil really be if he/she/it is involved with such a flawless product? Eh? Think about it. So, Precious Cat litter is not only super good at eliminating cat urine stench, but it also forces consumers to deeply ponder some of life's most mysterious philosophical questions. Tidy Cat don't do that, jus sayin'... 3.) Clumping performance - To me, next to the puke-inducing smell of cat urine, scooping soggy piles of cat mess is the absolute worst part of changing the litter box. With the mainstream brands, I've noticed there's about a 50:50 chance that the litter will clump. When it does, things are a-okay. When it doesn't, you might as well don a painter's mask and goggles to deal with the resulting acrid fumes. Once again, Precious Cat punches far above its weight here. This stuff clumps so consistently and so tightly that Detroit should consider using this stuff to fill potholes. Cleaning the litter box with Precious Cat is a much faster, much easier, and much less painful experience than ever. So, I conclude my review. Is Precious Cat a fantastic cat litter? Indeed. However, it's something better than that - it's a product that transcends its meager goals, which is to merely be a substance that cats crap into. For one, it's absolutely unmatched in its ability to do what no other cat litter can do, namely "leave no trace" that a cat resides in your house, a "silent warrior" if you will. Yes, I said it - it's essentially the Navy SeALs of cat litter. It's also cheaper than its inept competitors. Perhaps most importantly, it can be the difference between a cat being happy and comfortable in a loving home and a cat finding itself in a shelter. Lastly, it's so outstanding that after witnessing its perfection, you'll be highly motivated to write paragraphs about it on Amazon. Cat litter. It's Precious Cat or nothing. ... show more

All the quality without the cost!!!
Size: 18 lb
This is a great quality hard clumping cat litter! I have tried many different brands in the past 6 months, but, since I am on a tight budget,I needed to find one that was just as affective as the expensive brands, but more wallet friendly. Dr. Elsey's Clean Tracks is that one!! Everything clumps perfectly, liquids and solids alike! It does clump the liquids extra hard of left to sit too long, but if you are like me, and you scoop the litter-box once a day, all you have to do is just run your scooper across the bottom, below the surface to loosen everything up before you start scooping. If you just start trying to scoop by starting at the top and working your way down towards the bottom, you're going to have a bit of a struggle. It seems that if you were to let it sit too long at a time it would probably be more like trying to scoop bricks. Scooping once a day is best as it doesn't give the larger pee clumps a chance to set up and stick to the bottom and get rock hard. This litter clumps quite nicely and doesn't fall apart into micro pieces that fall through the scooper like many of the low end brands do. This is like a high end litter at a low end price. Most cost somewhere around a dollar or more per pound...this litter is at least half of that and has all the performance qualities as the top shelf brands have! 40 lbs. for under $20 is a steal!! Especially for the great quality you get!!! Also, the amount of dust, even when pouring, is extremely low just like it says.(barely noticeable). This litter is unscented, yet, it still somehow masks the smell of any cat business going on. I am on day 4 and so far, so good...still no smell to speak of...and I havent had to change out the litter, add any additional litter, or add any masking powders to keep the smell down! There is a little bit of tracking but not enough to complain about. No litter is 100% track free. All around,& hands down, this stuff is worth every penny!!! I finally found a litter that checks all the boxes and doesn't cost a ridiculous amount of $money$!!! Oh, and my kitty likes it too!!! I highly recommend trying Dr. Elseys brand cat litter. You will NOT be disappointed!!! ... show more

Pretty good, kinda pricy
Size: 18 lb
I've used this for a full week. One adult senior cat. It clumps perfectly. Meaning when I scoop it doesn't try to crumble as I'm lifting it. It does track, however I have decided if its the litter or my cat. As far as smell, it's just okay at keeping the smell down. To be more descriptive, the box is in the bathroom, at 2pm she uses it.. at 4pm if i go INTO the bathroom i can get a faint odor of it.. by 7ishpm I can not. so i feel like it takes some time for the litter to absorb the odor, if that makes sense. To help this issue, I purchased some deodorizer crystals and only used a few. I dont trust using alot of those w/ my old cat. ... show more

Has a scent! Very small bag for the price/weight -- UPDATE: scent goes away after a few weeks

Review Image by Jennifer B.
UPDATE: After storing the bag of litter in the garage for a month or two (closed up) the smell disappeared and I was able to use it. Just an FYI...air the litter out someplace for a few weeks until that smell goes away. Open the top and just let it sit in the garage or someplace. Then it becomes usable. I will buy it again due to not finding anything better to use. I just wish it didn't need to air out before using. I have a very small garage and there's really no good place to keep it where it's not in the way. ORIGINAL ONE STAR REVIEW: I'm so disappointed in this litter. This is the first time I'm trying it out and boy is it overrated. First, the bag is small because the litter is heavy. You would need two or three of the 18 lb bags just to fill one good sized litter box to be 3-4 inches deep of litter. That makes this litter expensive and impractical. See photos for size reference. Second, it has a scent to it. I don't know if it's a substance intentionally added to mask or neutralize odors or if it is just the smell of the clay itself. I've smelled the exact same scent in other "unscented" litters and I stopped using all of those. I have a "super smeller" (extremely sensitive nose) and most people probably won't be able to smell this scent that I am detecting. But I am very conscious of how my pets smell and I do NOT want my cats smelling like anything other than themselves, so having them sitting on my lap smelling like the clay kitty litter is disgusting and infuriating to me. I don't recommend this litter to anyone. Even if you can't smell the scent, your cats can. I will not even use it due to the smell, so I have no idea how it does with clumping and tracking and whatnot. NOTE: I have not tried the larger sized bags of Dr. Elsey's so those might not have this scent that is in the smaller bags which would explain all the positive reviews. (I have had this experience with one other brand that is sold in bags -- the small bags had a scent, the large bags do not.) I would return it for a refund but it's such a hassle so I will use this litter to dispose of old cooking oil and other things that are bad to put down the drain. I will not be buying it again. That would be the only thing I'd recommend this litter for. Absorbing liquids for putting them in the trash instead of down the drain. ... show more

My new go-to litter
Size: 18 lb
TL;DR minimal tracking compared to other litters for long hair cat, contains smell well, accepted by picky princess kitty I have a very fluffy longhair cat with very fluffy 'mittens' that track litter everywhere. She is also a serial anxiety pee-er and has always been picky about litter. She only used pine pellets without issue when I lived in a house with hardwood floors, once I moved into a carpented house she decided there were softer places she rather go. I was using Smart Cat as it's what worked when I first got her, but it stopped containing the smell and roommates started to complaining. Had I gone nose blind? Oh no! I thought I would never use a clay based litter but I gave this a shot. Verdict? I love it, happy to make the switch. I think the heavier weight of the clay helps keep tracking to a minimum. The only time tracking has been an issue is when I've gotten lazy and not cleaned the box often enough which is entirely on me, just clean it every day and you won't run into this. When I change the box there is dust when I dump out the new bag, but otherwise I have not had issues with dust overall. I love that it doesn't have that gross clay litter smell, you can honestly not tell it's there if you keep in top of cleaning it every day to every other day. The clumps are heavier than I'm used to but the litter clumps well and doesn't break off and leave gross particles behind. Oh and no more accidents! She seems to really like it, so I assume it's more comfortable on her paws than past litter. This is my new go-to and I don't plan on changing that anytime soon so long as my kitty likes it. ... show more

The Odor Free Miracle is In The Mix! This is a Superior Odor Control Litter Just Naturally!
Size: 18 lb
I have never seen my cats so eager to use the litter box after I blended together a miracle of a mix of litters a few days ago. I could see using this litter on its own, but for starters I decided to mix the old litter brand with the new litter brand as a precaution. What I ended up with is the perfect litter! So I put one bag of this Dr. Elsey's Ultra Unscented Clumping Clay litter (18 lb) in a clean litter box and topped it with one box of Arm & Hammer SLIDE Platinum. In the second box I used this litter and the Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Platinum. Then I also mixed in 1/2 cup of Coir Wonder Cat Litter Charcoal Deodorizer. Once all the litters and charcoal were mixed up I just left the room and tried not to worry! What I immediately noticed after the cats used the boxes was how well the litter attached to the cat poop so it was much easier to get out of the box even when softer, like how our new kitten leaves things! Also the urine clumped into rock hard clumps that were so easy to remove and DID NOT crumble or fall apart! Little pieces of poop were also NOT left behind because the litter just stuck to the poop and it came out all in one piece or a few larger pieces. The miracle for me is in the mix of this litter and Arm & Hammer. The granules in this bag of litter are medium sized clay as compared to the fine sandy texture of the Arm & Hammer litters. I also think this litter is NOT dusty. So the Pros of this litter are: Granule Clay Size is Perfect for Clinging and Clumping Superior Odor Control -WOW! No Dust that I can see! Gray Appearance like a Normal Clay Litter! High Quality Litter Cats Seem to Love! No Litter on Paws or Sticking to the Box! I would say the litter mix I made up makes the litter deep enough and provides the right clumping ability so nothing sticks to the bottom or sides of the box. SLIDE litter is known for making it easy to pour the litter back out of the box into a doubled up garbage bag for removal. I do have extra large litter boxes so if you make up the mix in a smaller box less litter may be needed. I am very happy with this litter and will get more because now that I've got the mix down I will repeat this when I change the litter. I am noticing NO cat odor smells in the cat room and removal of the waste is easy and not a hassle. Before with just the Arm & Hammer litters the box was smelly within a few days and I had to change the whole box within a week. Now I can see this litter lasting two weeks at least! I will report back but so far I am very pleased and happy with this litter! It is Cat Approved!!! Now I can worry less and relax more! ~The Rebecca Review ... show more
