I purchased this gate to keep our dog out of the pantry where we have food, water, & litter for 2 cats. When initially purchased & installed, our puppy was only about 15 pounds and was able to fit through the small pet door. At 30 pounds he was still able to fit through, but a minor modification to shrink the total height of the door prevents him from fitting through while still allowing the cats through (cats are both around 10 pounds). Our dog doesn't jump or climb, but if you have an active jumper this gate might not be 100% effective. The mounting of this gate wasn't too terrible, although the included paper template was mostly useless. Instead I just mounted one of the bottom clips, put the gate up on that side, and positioned the top clip with the gate in place. Doing this on both sides worked first time although it was a little cumbersome (definitely recommend two people, one to hold & one to drill). I had to mount it several inches above the floor because of some moldings around my walls. You have to mount both clips on a flat surface with very little variation in height or one of the mounting arms won't reach the clips. The one-handed operation is doable, but it's a little awkward to slide the red locking tab over while lifting the latch. The latch will still close without locking it down, so we tend not to lock it anyway. This might be a bigger problem if there were kids to prevent from entering the pantry as well, but for the time being it's acceptable. Another complaint is that the pet door only opens in one direction, and does not come with any provisions to lock in a fully open position. This could result in trapping a pet in a room (or preventing them from reaching a room, depending on your setup). I had to hold the pet door open with some zip-ties to keep it from closing. Not much of a pain, but aesthetically not very nice. I may just remove the entire door at some point as I don't ever need to prevent the cats from reaching the pantry. ... show more

My partner, I, and our cat child, Shredder, just moved into a new home AND inherited the two elderly lady dogs who live here. Shredder is not a fan. In his younger years he fought a pitbull and a boxer and won. Now he's on the edge of elderdom and has no teeth due to medical issues, so he has mellowed. Of course, with these two dogs all he really needs to do is slap a b a couple times, and they get out of his way. Anyway, we bought these gates so that he can have the master bedroom and my home office to himself without the threat of hound invasion. This way he has been able to slowly explore the house on his terms and get a feel for just how troublesome these dogs are going to be. The cat door is the perfect size, big enough for him, small enough to keep two old medium-large dogs out of the VIP areas. Mind you, these dogs don't touch the gate; they haven't so much as leaned on it, so I cannot speak on how sturdy it is if someone else's beast really wants to test it. Also, I am fat, and as long as I go through sideways I fit just fine. I say this because I have tried to fit my big butt through other similar gates, and it was not cute. And from where I was sitting, it looked pretty easy to put together. Just make sure to follow the instructions. For our purposes this gate is perfect. I purchased this gate for the entry between my living room and kitchen which is 56 inches wide. The gate fits into the opening just fine so this likely would fit the maximum span noted in the product description. The installation was a bit tricky as many other reviewers have mentioned. The paper template included is only accurate for the screw hole placement and the space between the brackets, it's about 1 inch off and it won't work unless you have even floors. My teenager and I figured out an efficient way to install the gate without much of an issue so here's how we did it. 1) we sized the gate to match the width of the opening and inserting the pressure bolts into the ends of the gate; 2) after inserting the plastic foot that goes in the middle of the span we pushed the end of the gate up against the jamb and snapped one of the brackets onto the lower bolt-we marked the screw holes with a sharp object; 3) then we used the paper template by matching the screw holes we marked for the lower bracket with the template and then marked the upper bracket screw holes; 4) we screwed both the upper and lower brackets onto one side of the jamb and placed the gate into the brackets; 5) using a level app on the phone to maintain level we determined where the lower bracket should go and marked the screw holes and repeated step 3 to determine where the top bracket should go. Thankfully it worked the first time. It's not the highest quality metal nor the most decorative but it will do for our purposes. My one complaint is that the pet door does not swing both ways and it's not removable so we'll have to tie it open. My chunky kitty fits through the pet door just fine. ... show more
