I had worried that this might be magnetic like many other black sands. That can mess with your magnet scraper and destroy impellers in pumps. After a magnet test I’m happy to say this is NOT magnetic. However it is a sloppy mess when added to water. This is one of many products now that have ‘beneficial bacteria’ that they don’t describe in any detail (species? Ones that eat and convert ammonia and nitrite?). So they say don’t rinse it. That’s hogwash (maybe literally?). First of all I’ve always been skeptical of bacteria in a bag and second I wonder how much this wet gravels weight would change if it was just dry and prerinsed. See photo, and this doesn’t settle after a few minutes either. Most suspicious thing is how they have a sample of a water clarifier added to the gravel. Clear product placement and not cool. So why 4 stars? Because the not rinsed part is not that big of a deal. If it was magnetic that could be disastrous, but it’s not. Ultimately it’s very nice gravel that doesn’t do all the crazy things it claims, but it also doesn’t seem to do any harm and is perfect with a couple rinses. ... show more

First i would like to say that this is NOT sand, but fine gravel. N that this is NOT jet black as listed, but mixed with white gravel as well. However, in my case, that is actually exactly what i wanted in terms of color. The fact that is not true sand is also fine with me because the "death cloud"(as i call it lol) is not as strong. It is possible to place fish in the same day with this substrate. It will have to sit a majority of the day though. The photo that i took is the 1st day of putting in the GRAVEL lol ... show more

Don't listen to the package that tells you not to rinse it! If you don't rinse it your filtration system will be clogged with silt for weeks, its a disaster. Trust me I learned the hard way. RINSE IT, and rinse it thoroughly. The reason they tell you not to rinse is because the sand is supposedly has living bacteria which will be killed when you rinse it (most likely). But again, trust me when I tell you that any benefit you might get from the living bacteria in the sand is not worth the disaster of not rinsing this stuff. The bacteria will grow back. ... show more

Description states the substrate is sand with other things, what they DONT tell you is that theres so much other stuff in there that the 'sand' portion is about 5% so the black 'sand' thats in the bag can barely be seen, it says that it's black with 'some white particles' which we thought would be fine. There's more white than black in these bags and it's definitely NOT sand. There's a trick you can do to make most of the white disappear but the moment your fish get introduced to the tank and start digging, the white comes right back out because there's not enough of anything black in the bag to cover all the white. We ended up having to go to the pet store and buying 20 lbs of regular black sand to cover this substrate with. The substrate is great does what's advertised but it's definitely NOT SAND. Like others have said, this is not sand. It also is not black. More of a dark brown. The material is more like lava rock. I mixed this with the sand already in my tank. It looks ok, but not what i was hoping for. The biggest issue is with water movement this material works it's way to the surface and the true sand sinks. So, you end up with a brown layer on top. I keep sucking it out and removing it as it covers my sand. Soon it will all be removed. I would say this would be ok if it is the only substrate in your tank. If you are looking for sand or black pass on this. If I were doing a planted tank with drift wood this would look and work fine. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I order 4 20lb bags for my 75 gallon African Cichlid tank. Followed instructions and did not rinse and just added to aquarium. Was cloudy for a few hours and didn’t seem to affect my fish. Cleared to a beautiful crystal clear aquarium. I would highly recommend this product. Ph is stable at 8.2 and my Africans are happy and healthy! 5 stars! ... show more
