I wanted to try some carbide tipped turning chisels and decided to give these a shot. I have decent basic spindle skills and am starting into bowls and segmented vessels. These tools cut cleanly and leave a fine surface. They hold an edge better than my hss chisels. Much faster to turn the cutter a quarter turn than to stop to sharpen a chisel. This set works great, so much better than my homemade carbide cutters. These are very sharp, cut smoothly and easily. I also like that it's easy to set the length a little shorter which works better for my mid-sized lathe. Quality seems quite good, from the carbide cutters to the shafts to the handles. The shafts have rather sharp corners which some may want to round over a little but I haven't had any problems with them, such as catching. I use mostly carbide cutters but occasionally still use HSS. The only CON I might have, and it isn't a big one, is that if the shaft is extended far out, the tool, since the handle is aluminum, will feel a little unbalanced. The bottom of the handle can be unscrewed and some ballast could be added if desired to make the handle heavier. But I'm not sure that is needed. Overall, I am very pleased with this set. Most likely I will want to buy more handles, right now I have the 2 handles on the most often used cutters. I would definitely recommend this set. ... show more

I have only used HSS turning tools. I have a bench grinder to get the right angles and two diamond plates to finish the edge on each tool. This takes a lot of time away from turning wood, especially when roughing in, which dulls even the best edges quickly. I took a chance on these carbide tools. I wanted tools with thick SS bars to help quell vibrations. I started using them and was amazed at the results. I had heard, and believed, that carbide turning tools left a lot to be desired. My wife got me a mini lathe for Christmas. I bought a set of three tools for $80 ish dollars. With nothing to compare them to, I thought okay this is the way carbide tools cut. I decided I liked turning and bought a bigger lathe. I bought these tools for when my other lathe arrives. Head to head, square cutter to square cutter comparison. Hands down these tools were better. Since I started using these I haven't gone back to my old set even once great tools.. I think you need to make replacement cutting edges to cut beads on vases and bowls... Tried to contact the company to mention this but they won't return call
