  • Used it to replace a Bazooka sub (what many here are using it for) in a bass tube. ITS WEAK.
Pattern: Speaker
I gave this 3 stars. Yes it works. Yes it sounds great. Yes it has nice clean bass. The problem is that its like so much of car audio today; it lacks power. Like the original bazooka tube came with the same diameter speaker, but the similarities end there. The original Bazooka speaker is like 4 times as heavy, has a magnet way more than twice as large, and the foam is even better. The original speaker is almost 1/3rd deeper too. Now I could overlook all of that and not even mention it if the sound was comparable, but its not. Today's speakers are designed to reduce the incoming power so they can work at a higher rate of volume (looks good on paper) so they can brag about how much wattage it can handle (often rated at full distortion curve). The elephant in the room is you're not utilizing what the amp will do at all. The end result is a WEAK subwoofer. I used to own a local car audio and accessories business. Ive done THOUSANDS of installs from basic stereo to advanced setups. Ive seen it all. I get so tired of explaining to people that you still get what you pay for. At the end of the day it boils down to "how much did you pay for it" and sadly THAT is what determines the end result. I wanted this to replace my little 6" Bazooka speaker in a self powered cannon. I wasn't expecting much. The bass was so weak that I had more bass when I switched the 4 door speakers to full than I had when I used this self-powered tube with door speakers set to High Pass only. I yanked it and installed a 10" sub. I really didnt want to. I wanted less weight for drifting, but I enjoy my music, and it wasnt much better than straight stock stereo.. which was sad. YES it will work. Just dont expect much at all. You need a HUGE car amp to pull enough bump from this speaker to make it move like it needs to. Its just ineffecient. A better brand speaker is like 7 of nine. Sweet. effecient. Sexy. A cheaper speaker is like a Ferangie. It works when pushed hard but not one wants to see him. ... show more

  • Read Three Times, Measure Two Times, Cut Once
Pattern: Speaker
First, I LOVE the value of these subwoofers. I use them in custom speaker cases through my Etsy store. I find they are very musical and fit my need just right. I use them with a BT 200 watt amplifier that supplies 100 watts to a sub channel. The amplier also allows the user to adjust the sub cutoff frequency and this subwoofer handles it wonderfully! I have purchased this sub many times and have yet to be disappointed in its performance. Now for the reason of only 4 stars and the explanation of the title of my review...... I read the cutout spec for the speaker in the paper spec sheet that comes inside the box. It states 5.5 inches. I use a circle cutting jig with very precise settings. When I cut out the speaker hole, the sub didn't fit.....the frame was larger than 5.5 inches! I thought I must have set my jig incorrectly, but no, it was set right. I measured the cutout and it was also right at 5.5 inches. I re-read the spec sheet ----- 5.5 inches! I measured the speaker basket itself and it was 5.75 inches --- a full quarter inch wider than expected. I went online to the Pyle website and downloaded the pdf manual. It stated 142 mm. Well, that's 5.59 inches. So now I have two official Pyle publications on the same product with two different measurements. Not happy. I have to recut the hole to 5.75 inches and that takes additional time. Because this is a custom-built speaker for a client, that additional time equates to less money out of my pocket. I hope Pyle corrects the online material for others who will make the same assumption I did. I understand the the printed material in the boxes located at distribution centers are another issue. Great product....lousy support material. ... show more

  • What it is and isn’t (Jeep)
Pattern: Speaker
I recently installed this sub in a 2002 Jeep TJ to replace the factory sub. The stock sub had been out for years. This review is from the perspective of the casual music listener. I was basically looking to restore the low end of my audio. What it is: A super inexpensive subwoofer to restore a factory type listening experience. It handles well in those conditions, and I highly recommend it. It has a good build and feels somewhat durable. What it is not: This is not a large sounding sub or a deep bass producing sub for someone that wants everyone within the vehicle to feel their music. If you want to pull your Jeep up to the beach/block party and be the sole boom box for said event, this sub is probably not for you. But, if that describes you, you are probably not looking at $18 subwoofers. In general: There is simply not anything else in this price range that is going to perform any better. It was $18 and arrived at my house the next day. If the thing only lasts a year or two, I’d purchase another one. I could almost buy 5 of these before I reached the cost of other replacement subs for my vehicle. For the Jeep TJ owners: If you need to replace the factory sub and plan on using the factory amp, this seems like a super simple choice. I know of two other replacement subs— only one real one that requires no modifications. They are 4 and 5 times as much as this sub. This is a dual voice coil 4ohm sub. That’s the same specs as the factory sub. The biggest difference is that you will need to drill new screw holes, as this speaker is slightly smaller than the factory sub (6.5 vs the factory 6.75). This sub is also slightly deeper than the stock sub. So I used a pair of pliers to snap off pieces inside the rear of the stock sub compartment. There are videos online showing this action. There are also videos showing the removal of the factory sub console compartment. The whole process took me less than an hour from start to finish. If I had to do it again, it could probably be accomplished in 20mins. ... show more
