I have been thinking about getting one of these OBDII code scanners for some time now. There have been a few times when my car has displayed a “Check Engine” light, and my automotive repair shop has charged me a fee just to interpret the code. I decided it’s time for me to be more proactive and take more control of understanding my car and it’s computerized systems by acquiring this iKiKin OBDII Car Code Scanner/Reader. Now I am able to read Fault Codes, and stay on top of my car’s maintenance. This OBDII Code Scanner works on US manufactured vehicles built since 1996, and does not need batteries, as it derives power via the vehicle’s OBDII port itself. Once I understood where my car’s OBDII port was actually located, I had no trouble hooking up the OBDII Code Reader via the attached cable. I ordered this because I don't know much about cars, and I like that it's easy to understand all you do is plug it in and it will give you a code depending on if there's something wrong with your car. you can check online for more references to the code if you like. Handy if you are a woman since we don't all know about cars. It will not fix your problem, but you can be more confident if you take your car to a mechanic afterward. With this, it could give you a little more notion of what's wrong so you don't get scammed or simply save some money if you can fix yourself. I think it's worth the price and never hurts to know a little more you never know when you will need it. ... show more

As I am not very mechanically inclined, I've never considered owning a car diagnostic tool. What for? Chances are I won't be able to fix the problem, but I see that this is a good tool to have. It allows you to make an informed decision of whether or not an issue needs immediate attention. if it is something that you may try to fix yourself or requires a pro. I tested this on our family's extra car, a 1999 Mercury Mystique. It has had a check engine light on for years. The car runs fine so we've ignored it assuming it was caused by something minor or not worth fixing on a car this old that's not driven often. I found the interface under the cars dash and plugged the scanner in. It immediately powered up, even before turning the car on. I turned the car on and went through the different menu items. Most of them seemed to work fine, a few didn't have information available, such as the VIN number reader. This may have something to do with the car's age. The main function, the engine diagnostic, worked well. It gave me the reading "P0171 Bank 1 Lean". Auto Zone's trouble codes site give a good explanation of this code and it's causes and possible fixes. It basically means that there is too much oxygen "leaning" the fuel mixture, most likely due to an air leak in a hose or something since the engine is so old. This scanner has a wealth of information available to help diagnose or monitor your cars functions. Much more than novices will need or understand, but it's also simple enough for most to use. ... show more

I have another OBDII reader that I bought from Amazon that has a simple LCD display, and it uses the same exact menu system that this one does. But I have to say, this one is much nicer because of the color LCD display and is easier to read and navigate. I won't go into all the full details of what this reader can do, as there are tons of reviews on what these cheap reader is capable of. But I will say, for the price, the fact that it comes with the color LCD display is a big plus. And for the price you can't beat what it features. ... show more

    • Amazing that it works so well at this price point!
This is small and light, and feels like it might be a little fragile for daily commercial use, but for occasional use by a car owner it's amazing what you get for less than $20. The cable is thick and the connector and pins seem durable, and I had no trouble connecting it to either of my cars. It was able to recognize both of them instantly, one from 2009 and the other from 2023. It pulled up the VIN correctly for each one, and was able to tell me that there were no codes set on either vehicle and no freeze frame data in memory. I watched several of the engine parameters as I ran the engine and it could tell me throttle position, engine speed, temperature, pressures, and all kinds of data about the engine. According to the booklet that comes with it, if you do have a code it tells you what the code means so you know what to check if you have a problem. It works great, and I like it. ... show more

    • A must have if you keep your cars or trucks
I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500. I plan on keeping it until it dies. I was running over to Auto Zone to check why a warning light would show up on my dash. I have a friend who spent a small fortune on an app-based Car Code Reader. I thought it was a good idea, but not at the price he paid. This is a bargain and works fine. Just plug it in. I prefer knowing for myself what problem I'm dealing with before I bring my truck in for service. After I have the code, I head to the internet to find out what are the causes and if can I fix it myself or do I need a professional. ... show more
