I used to own a Pendlay NexGen HD bushing bar. It was a good barbell for Olympic weightlifting, but several features made it a poor choice for powerlifting. Specifically, it had no center knurling (very bad for low bar back squats), the knurling was soft (bad for deadlifts and rows), and it had a decent amount of whip (bad when you want a more stable bar). All of these are great features for an Olympic weightlifting barbell, but aren't ideal for powerlifting, which is what I am focusing on. This Cap barbell has deeper knurling than the Pendlay. The knurling is also sharper on the center, which is great for back squats. The bar has a little bit of flex when I put 425lbs on it and walked it out of the rack, but less than the Pendlay did with 345lbs. The Cap was totally straight with that weight when it was in the rack. The Cap barbell even has decent spin on the sleeves, so it'll be an OK choice for someone who wants to do power cleans or snatches sometime. In comparison to the Texas Power Bar, the knurling is softer and it isn't as stiff. If I were deadlifting over 500lbs I would probably care. In comparison to the Rogue Bar: this bar has roughly equivalent knurling, smoother spin, and less whip. Given that this barbell costs $200 vs the ~$300 for other options that are marginally better, I'm completely satisfied with this purchase. If I really need something better in the future, I'll get a Q-Bar from Quest -- $600 for an IPF approved barbell is a steal. ... show more

For the money, this is hands down the best Olympic barbell I could find! Unless you want to pay for a fancier name or are far above the average lifter, this is the best value bar.

This review will be written from a Power lifting perspective. My goals for this bar were to be able to train in the 5 rep range with 425-550 lbs or more in Squat and dead lift. I also wanted a bar that was at least decent for pressing in the 300lbs range. I was pretty much set on a Buddy Capps Texas Power bar but knew that it didn't quite flex enough to set up higher in the Dead-lift. Then I read the reviews about this bar and bout it's little flex but low whip. I was considering giving it a try. Then It went on sale for 149.00 with prime shipping. That sealed it for me. The bar came in 2-3 tubes taped together. One end was open exposing the bar. Luckily it was not damaged and was straight when I inspected it. The knurling is really medium, great for bench and squats but I will have to chalk for dead lifts over 450lbs and probably use straps for lifts over 500. It didn't flex as Much as I had hoped for in the Dead lift, but it was not too stiff. it felt best on the bench press Probably because I only had 250lbs on there and the bar reacted stiffer under that lighter load. But it felt very stable and I was very confident pressing. For those looking for a good oly bar. this is not it. The spin is good but far from what I would want to have for explosive technical lifts. The Spring Clamps will fit this bar without coming off but get some lock jaws to be sure. All in all it is a good bar well worth the money I paid. But I Know I'm lifting at the upper limits of this bar and will want a Texas Dead lift bar in the future. ... show more

I am very pleased with this bar. I was looking for a cheaper bar that had center knurling and was a standard 45lb powerbar. I do not have any need for a bar over $300 from Rogue or similar because I don't lift that much-- I'm just able to do sets of 225 for deadlifts, and hope to get to 300 by the end of the year. This bar fits all those requirements. The knurling is not aggressive, but lends itself to a good grip, even without chalk. In fact, the black oxide finish has grip to it so it is a bit hard to slide down your legs when you are repping deadlifts, but it has got better as I continue to use it. You definitely don't need to put electrical tape on it as another commenter mentioned. It does have quite a bit of oil on it when it arrives, which was annoying for a few weeks, but it is covered in enough chalk now that it isn't a major problem. The bar arrived without damage from shipping, but was a pain to get out of the packaging. I unwrapped it at the gym in anticipation of it being super greasy/dirty, and I'm glad I did. I keep it locked up with a Rogue Proloc, which fits the collars. ... show more

The packaging was torn open on both ends but the bar itself sustained no damage. You can feel the quality of this bar as soon as you pick it up. I don't worry about this bar failing. I love the knurling which adds to my comfort level because of the non-slip grip it provides and makes it so easy to find the middle of the bar for a balanced lift. I only own 3 bars at this time. This one is my best by far. The knurling is finer and hurts my hands less for deadlifts and the coating on the bar allows my plates to slide on and off more effortlessly than my Iron Crush bar. If I would have discovered this bar first I would have two now.
