Forget all the negative here. I'm 89 year old and been using computers since 1984. I have an HP with a drawer, (who in the world would buy a computer without one???) Anyway I had no problems using the CD to set the printer up or following the instructions to do so. The area it takes up is a third of what my old Cannon all in one did. More desktop space to use. It is light enough anyone can pick it up with ease. It is well worth the 5 stars I gave it. My only complaints are and they aren't large; (1) it doesn't ask you if you want an icon on the screen and you have to find the printer on the control panel or hard drive and tell the computer to put one there. (2) and this is the largest thing to me, it takes so long to a-line the heads. I have never had to a-line heads in any printer, so this was new but it was very time consuming although you were walked through it step by step. Along with the time, the printer had to use ink to show you the a-lineaments so you can click the various areas on the screen to set them for the best printing. I hope Cannon took this into consideration when they loaded the ink cartridges that came with it. (I did buy a second set of the XL at the time I got the computer). (3) with my arthritic hands it took a little bit to get the cartridges in, there is no latch like the other printers have so you have to push in and up till they click. As for the operation it is great, the print is clear, it doesn't take long to print (exception is the a-lineament pages) and it doesn't give you any sass. It is the next step up from the old printers we started out with that had the tape that ran back and fourth and could be loaded from the bottom so you could set an entire paper case under them.. Loved those old ones. This one to me and for me is great. I don't need nor do I like the All In Ones I find something is always not working or jamming, or taking time, or giving me sass etc. I don't print a lot, statements etc at end of month, or perhaps a picture now and then. For the kid in collage for the older person who just wants a nice SIMPLE PRINTER and doesn't need a FAX or the SCANNER coming with it, this is a fantastic step. I always have thought that you need your computer pieces separate, so that when one goes out you don't loose the fax and scanner etc. It's much more expensive to replace an All In One for home then just run out and pick up a printer or a scanner. I have used a cannon Lide scanner for years; I'm on my third one and love my extra pieces sitting on their own and not together. That said this is a fantastic little light weight work horse printer that is easy to install, easy to use, and doesn't give any sass or say it can't print, you're off line, paper jam, etc. I recommend it for people who don't need all the bells and whistles that an all in one gives (provided you can get and keep them working), and only need to print paper or a picture. I hope Cannon keeps this printer in their line up because when mine goes out, if it does, I want another one. ... show more

The USB required, which isn't included, isn't just any old USB cable; it has a specialty connection at the printer end. The only reason this purchase worked for me is that I had had a Canon printer for ages & had kept this cable from it. That being said, the printer works very well.

    • Won’t connect to devices without A LOT of troubleshooting and work

It’s been 15 years of hard fought battles getting my old canon printer to connect to devices and use. Almost every time I have to print something (once a year) there is a new problem that takes hours and hours to solve. I finally gave up on my old canon printer and bought this new one thinking after 15 years they might finally be able to make a printer that connects to a device and prints a page without the stress and hours of wasted time. I was wrong. Here I am again fighting and stressing to get this printer to connect to something. Canon has some serious serious issues with technology and making printers that connect to devices. If you buy a canon, be ready for hours of stress and problems everytime you have to set it up with a device, change internet providers, anything slight change at all and they stop working. Resulting in hours and hours of gut wrenching problem solving just to make it connect to ANYTHING and print a page. Done with this company for life. ... show more

    • Everything I need...and don't.

The 4 star rating does NOT mean I found this to be a bad printer. I was looking for an inexpensive unit for general use. Found it! It comes with the CD containing the driver (you can download it from the Canon website if you no longer have a CD-ROM drive) but DOES NOT include the USB-A to USB-B printer cable. This is necessary as the unit doesn't have Wi-Fi print capability. Not a deal-breaker for me as I already had the cable (they are inexpensive if you don't). Setup was easy and aligning the print heads only required 2 sheets of paper. Print quality was far better than I expected for both text and photos. I am used to printers which use multiple color ink cartridges for high-quality photo printing but again was impressed with the photo quality. It is extremely lightweight which may lead some to believe it's a "cheap" feel, but I found this a plus. Pros: Affordable price Print quality Easy setup Cons: No Wi-Fi printing requiring a cable for connection (you can't print photos directly from your smartphone). Can only print photos on 8-1/2 x 11 or 4 x 6 paper Single cartridge for colors, meaning it will need to be replaced even if only one color is depleted (if you print a lot of color this may be a deal-breaker). ... show more

Ink tanks are large. Set up is easy. Prints nice quality. Good price/value. Make sure to buy a printer USB cable because it's not included. It comes with a CD but you won't need it. Just connect the printer to your PC, type "printers" in the search bar at the bottom left corner of your desktop, and open the printers and scanners window. Then tick the box to let Windows find the printer. It will load drivers, etc. Then print out a test page. Setup complete. ... show more

Throw away printer - use it abuse it and buy another for the costs of new ink carts...sell it used to a second hand store and get a few bucks back any thing is better than nothing. Do not give it away either to anyone you know, that's not nice the carts cost more than the printer alone.
