When this lens was announced, I just knew I'd have to get it. I've been using 300mm, 500mm and 600mm Canon supertele primes for nearly 20 years on various jobs where they were provided by employers. The 200-400 was out of my reach and was an f/4 lens, but this really ticked all the boxes for me. I still believe you lose a little image quality by virtue of the lens being a zoom, but this lens still beats any Mark I (and even some Mark II) supertele primes. However, what you gain is the flexibility of being able to frame your shots more easily for things like airshows, sports, and birds in flight. Good to note that the first one I bought was defective out of the box. I'd spent 4 hours driving roundtrip to buy one at launch only to experience this unfortunate defect. Canon overnighted me a new one. It works exceptionally well with 1.4x teleconverters even acceptably well with 2x extenders. Most of Canon's RF lens lineup would be ill-suited for 2x extenders but this does OK. It comes at a premium even compared to other brands, but it really is among the very best -- and quite a unique lens to boot. ... show more
