This extender paired well with the rf 100-500 for bird photography. The image quality was good, or at least I couldn't notice a difference. The focus speed is just a tad slower than the rf 1.4x extender, but completely acceptable (even for birds). As any extender will, the light to lens is greatly reduced. So the iso goes up and the image degrades or the shutter speed gets slower; or both. I think it's a good purchase if you need a little extra reach and don't like cropping in post. ... show more

    • Make sure it is compatible with your lens
My mistake in buying this item was I didn’t make sure it was compatible with my lens. I was hoping to match it with my 70-200 lens, but they are not compatible, so I sent the item back. That’s not a knock on the item, but honestly more my inability to read item descriptions, and that’s on me.

Added the extender to my RF 100-500mm zoom and it work as expected. So glad for the extra reach, turns my 100-500 to a 600-1000mm zoom.

    • On my Canon 100 to 500mm lens can only use from 300 - 500mm.
1x2 lens extends to far back to use 100 - 200mm range of my 100 - 500mm canon lens.

Good piece of equipment but be very careful about which lenses are comparable to retain autofocus. I have found on my 89D that the two place drop in the F stop prevents the autofocus from working. Even when autofocus works, it’s noticeably slower. For longer lenses about 400 mm and up, you have to tripod shoot to get decent focus at all. ... show more

Works great with my R5 with no noticeable loss of AF ability. Keep in mind you're going to lose a few stops of light and your AF area will be greatly diminished. I also found that just cropping in without an adapter produced images of similar detail as with the adapter most of the time so its usefulness is greatly diminished for me.
