Very happy with this lens and camera. Lens is sharp. Very little post editing (if any) is required with photos straight out of camera!

Other reviews sowed me that this camera will overheat and not take long enough videos. I should have done more research before buying this one. I am buying either a 5r or 5r mark 2

I'm not a professional photographer, but I consider myself to have a good artistic eye. I have a background in marketing and graphic design so I deal with a lot of commercial photography both in editing and in layouts. I also used to own a small magazine and directed a lot of the shoots, and also edited most of the photos myself. Most of my photography was subcontracted to professionals with pro equipment. I wish I had had this camera for myself when I owned the magazine. The image quality is very high as expected. I love the resolution I can get from this camera. The 24-240mm lens is wonderfully versatile. I love the warm richness and depth of the images. This really makes a difference in creating atmosphere. Especially appreciated is that I can shoot and switch from RAW to JPEG and back easily, and have RAW images that have better flexibility for editing. JPEG is great if you're in the field and want to quickly upload to social media. The menu is very intuitive. I really like the touch screen too, and its large, clear display. The accompanying manual is a great overview of how to use the camera, but there is also a 36 MB PDF Advanced User Guide available for download which has a lot more detail. The WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity is seamless. I downloaded the Camera Connect app onto my iPad and added the camera with ease. The camera can be operated live and remotely from my iPad (or smartphone if you prefer) and the camera's images can also be viewed instantaneously from the iPad. This is especially useful if I have a creative assistant in the field. Or, as previously mentioned, if you want to upload to social media directly from your mobile device. I'm in the midst of developing my own consumer product and am excited that I can shoot my own photos for product packaging, promotional pieces, and editorial. I especially love the high quality video that this can produce and that I can connect an external microphone, and headphones. This will make for great promo and product education videos too. Note that there is a 1.4.0 firmware update available as of 10/31/19 which supports shooting Full HD in 24p (and also support for the RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS lens). Pro photographer wise, I can't comment on how this camera measures up, but for a pro designer and end user of the digital images it produces, the Canon EOS RP is an extremely satisfying introduction to creating my own professional photos and video. I'll be spending a lot of time getting to know my new favorite piece of creative equipment. ... show more

  • Excellent budget entry in the fullframe mirrorless camera market
Style: w/ RF 24-240 USM Lens Set: Base
First off, I've owned everything from a Canon Rebel Ti film camera to various digital Rebels and a 30D to, more recently, a 7D and SL1. I've loved them all even realizing their limitations. After all, best camera is the one you have with you. But, after marching partway up the Great Wall with a 7D and 20 below wind-chills, I switched to a non-Canon mirrorless camera for vacation shots. And now I'm happy to report that my new love, the Canon RP, is here. I immediately bought the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. Even if you don't own a slew of Canon EF or EF equivalent lenses like I do, Canon RF lenses are few and rather expensive while you can find plenty of new and used EF lenses to fit your budget and needs as well as plenty of third party lenses (e.g., Sigma DG, Tamron Di, etc.). What do I like about the RP? It's small and light, the electronic viewfinder works very well and it has a quite usable articulating touch screen, it feels great in my hand, it's got a really nice focusing system (firmware 1.3), it handles low light really well and the photos look fantastic. And it can use all of my old lenses. With the adapter, it handled all my old lenses - Canon and Sigma - without issues, though focus was a little slow with my oldest Canon EF lenses like the 135mm f2.8 SF. The RF24-240mm kits lens is a bit large and on the heavier side but it does a good job and is great for travel. Though, in retrospect, I think I would have liked the RF 'L' kit lens better. C'est la vie. The RP is packed with features such as a teaching mode for settings and all sorts of in-camera processing like in-camera RAW processing, focus bracketing, HDR, interval timer, etc. Yes, I'm not a RAW snob (no offense) but my vacation shots aren't going to end up in Nat Geo. So, if you're on a budget and want to upgrade to a full-frame digital camera, give the RP a chance. If you're a super enthusiast or semi-pro, you might want to go for the 5D Mark IV or, if you're an action shooter, maybe a 7D Mark II. But the RP meets my modest needs well and will be more than welcome to accompany me on my travels. As the cheapest full-frame camera at the moment and very good at what it does, it's well worth consideration. ... show more

  • Decent entry level full-frame camera but hoped for more
Style: w/ RF 24-240 USM Lens Set: Base
I’ve been using micro4/3 ever since the introduction of the Panasonic GF series, but I’ve always wondered how a full-frame sensor camera image would compare. Since full-frame sensor cameras are so expensive, I’ve been hesitant. Now that Canon has introduced the RP with a price that’s lower than other models, they’re targeting enthusiasts like me who want a taste of full-frame imaging. The first thing that strikes me about RP is the weight. Boy is it heavy! I guess DSLR people are used to having so much weight and a lot more but coming from micro four thirds it’s a huge adjustment. The body itself feels solid with a grip that fits in your hands perfectly and never feels like it can slip. The 24-240mm zoom is even heavier than the body. Sure, I appreciate the zoom but it sure makes it difficult to lug around all day! The build is quite solid. Even the bottom battery door is metal. The body appears to be weatherproof as well which means that you should be fine with rain, but I wouldn’t drunk this underwater as the doors don’t look to be that secure. I think the body should be able to handle some punishment. The camera ships with a drained battery so it took almost 4 hours for me to charge the battery before my first use. The battery life seems ok. If you occasionally take photos throughout the day it will last you a day. But if you want to continually use it, you’ll definitely need to carry spares. I guess for non-professionals like myself who will use this mostly for occasional photo shoots it’s okay. The batteries itself is a bit pricey if you want to get spares or replace them. They retail for $75 but you should be able to find them on sale. You can tell this camera is not targeted towards professionals. The battery compartment allows you to use just one SD card, nothing else. The other drawback is that it’s not really a full featured video camera. They just released a firmware upgrade, 1.4, that finally allows for you to shoot 24fps on 1080p. 4K video recording tops out at 25fps. Although this camera is mainly targeted towards those who want to shoot stills, I find that shooting videos is not bad. If you’re ok shooting slower frame rates the autofocus seems to work well and it’s silent. Even in lower light situations, it focuses well. In terms of still images, this thing is fantastic! The images from a full-frame sensor are amazingly detailed. I would say it is head and shoulder’s better than a micro4/3 and it’s very noticeable. The dynamic range appears to be a bit better than my micro4/3 but since I’ve not used any other full-frame camera’s I can’t say for sure how the RP compares to other cameras of its ilk. The zoom lens works extremely well with the ILS. I had no issues with either stills or videos. All of the shots came out with no blur even at the longest zoom range. Due to the weight of the camera with the large zoom, this is definitely a two-handed camera. What others have complained about, not being able to recognize the RAW format natively on their computers or other software is accurate. Normally, I’m able to import RAW from different camera brands on my Mac and Photos app but for some reason, Canon is not releasing their RAW profiles to companies like Apple. So, you can’t use RAW files out of this RF unless you download and run Canon’s software. That’s unfortunate as there’s no need to force people to go through an extra step just to be able to use RAW. Making things difficult is what is forcing people to abandon your hardware Canon! The other disappointment with the camera is that there’s a quarter-second lag when it’s storing the image after taking it. So, if you try to take a photo and want to reframe, you’ll see it stutter as you try to recompose. I guess that’s ok if you’re taking a stationary object but it will be a pain if you’re trying to track a moving target. I’m using a Lexar Pro 1667x SDXC UHS-II/U3 card so I doubt that the bottleneck is the card that I’m using. Both the EVF and the display are great and work as expected. I especially like the touch to focus as it’s easy to pick the focus point. With the newly released firmware update, the eye-tracking works fast and accurately as well. Ultimately, I think the RP is targeted towards a very narrow segment of the market. If your number one goal is to have the best image quality with the least cost without going professional then this is the camera for you. Personally, I think there are way too many tradeoffs needed in return for that privilege. The weight, loud shutter, stutter after each shot, inability to use RAW unless you use Canon’s utility, limited battery life, and inability to record faster 4K framerates are all the things you have to be able to accept in order to like the RP. For the rest of us, I would stick with micro4/3 or wait until Canon releases RP II. ... show more

  • There is no other mirrorless full frame camera for this price There is no other mirrorless full frame camera for this price
Style: w/ RF 24-240 USM Lens Set: Base
At the moment of writing this review (2019-11-09) there is a new firmware update (1.4.0) available at Canon website it was released on 10/31/2019 so please make sure to update the firmware before anything else (adjustments or using the camera). After the firmware, you can shoot 24p (23.98fps) in 4K and Full HD recording resolutions. Now you can attach the strap and then I recommend you read the manual and go thru all the menus and customize to your convenience, for instance I like turn off the preview after each shot (default is 2 seconds) and like this small adjustment, there are many more that you could be interested in change. Once you are done with all these initial steps, then we can start using this camera and please understand that this is my first full frame and my previous camera was a Canon Rebel T6 which is crop sensor, I have added 1 pic with each camera so you can see what a big difference is a full frame sensor. Well, to me this is definitively a step up. Pros: Lightweight body (the included lens is heavy but the camera body is very light). Includes a very versatile and nice lens: a 24-240mm F4-6.3 with stabilizer (IS) and ultrasonic motor (USM is faster and produces less noise than regular motor lenses). It is a faster camera than my Rebel. Has more auto focus points (Max. 4,779) than my Rebel (9) and more AF options that work very well. Flip-out LCD screen with several angles so you can shoot video and watch yourself (useful for youtubers). If you do manual focus or you want to use a vintage lens, you have an assistant called MF peaking: when is enabled, highlights in red the areas that are in focus on the viewfinder. I highly recommend this product. The only thing that could be better is battery life but you always can get a spare battery. ... show more

  • Lightweight and quiet! Wish a second battery was included! Need RF lenses or adapter for EF ones. Lightweight and quiet! Wish a second battery was included! Need RF lenses or adapter for EF ones.
Style: w/ RF 24-240 USM Lens Set: Base
First of all, I'm a Nikon shooter so my muscle memory has been having a bit of a learning curve with the EOS RP, but not nearly as much as I thought. The first thing I noticed out of the box was the weight of both the body and lens (24-240 F/4-6.3). The body is soo light! Like, barely feel in your hands! I loved it! However, the lens is a bear, and made the camera feel a little off-center in my hands, but I quickly adjusted. A smaller prime lens would change this weight issue significantly. The next thing I noticed was the quietness and quickness of the shutter! The viewfinder is digital (like live view, which is really helpful for getting your settings right in camera - what you see is what you get). Honestly, it reminded me of my phone's camera - very quick and quiet, freezing the frame before my hand shakes or the subject moves. The 24-240 lens does really well as a walkabout, all-purpose lens, though there are obvious limitations. I prefer portraiture photography, and the lowest aperture is 4.0 at the shortest focal length of 24 mm. You can't lock in your aperture as with a prime lens, so anytime you zoom the aperture will increase. Subsequently, this would not be my lens of choice for most applications. Disappointing as well, is that unless I buy a Canon RF lens (made for these mirrorless cameras), I'll need an adapter to use Canon's own EF lenses. The touch screen is nice, especially because my Nikon-ness is still unsure of which buttons work which menu option -- and I can quickly use the screen to make my choice. It's also a quick and easy way to adjust the focal point -- just like my phone's camera! A second battery would have been nice. Full charging takes an hour or more, and I can't stop in the middle of a shoot to wait for a fresh battery. There's a lot to love about the RP. It's full potential is limited due to the 'kit' lens, but so far I'm very pleased with the picture quality and performance in indoor, low-light situations - so much better than my crop sensor d3200! 1st pic taken at 240mm, f/6.3, 1/640, ISO 500. 2nd pic, 100% crop - love the amazing detail that was captured! ... show more
