Description

“A scorchingly brilliant, wildly funny, and deeply moving epic.” —John Green, 1 globally bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars Two unlikely heroes embark on quests to win God’s favor in this outrageously entertaining, profoundly heartfelt novel that announces an ingenious new voice in the tradition of Chain-Gang All-Stars, No One Is Talking About This, and Martyr! Yara can’t comprehend why God has chosen them to slay Dominic, the ruthless leader of the army of Bad Guys. Cast out by their family and reeling from a destructive relationship, Yara has never felt weaker—but with nothing left to lose, they strike a deal. Abandoning their solitary days of embroidery and obsessive cleaning, Yara reluctantly embarks on a perilous odyssey designed to prepare them for the daunting mission ahead. Meanwhile, Adrena, a disillusioned prophet with a terrifying secret power, is determined to become the hero of this story. Desperately seeking the glory of God’s approval and the promise of heaven, where she hopes to reunite with her beloved mother, Adrena must first persuade Harpo, the leader of the Good Guys, that her plan is God’s will. As their journeys unfold in a series of unforgettable adventures, Yara and Adrena are propelled toward each other and transformative revelations about life, death, and destiny in this intensely captivating, irreverent epic from a singularly brilliant new voice in fiction. • A triumph!
Format: Hardcover
When Yara is approached by God while bathing is a holy stream to try to make themselves clean again, the last thing they expect is to be tasked with slaying Dominic, the leader of the Bad Guy Army. Upon their agreement they are sent off on a series of tasks to prepare themselves to be up for the task. But Yara isn’t the only one out to slay Dominic. Adrena is a prophet that had trained her whole life for this exact job but when God decides it is not her tasks she hatches her own plans to join Harpo and the Good Guy Army to take down Dominic herself. In true epic quest fashion both Yara and Adrena find themselves facing individuals that they would have never guessed. Who will be the one that wins God’s favor? This book is weird and when I say that I mean it in the “oh my I have never encountered anything like this before and I’m so glad that it landed in my hands.” There is so much humor, humanity, and richness in the story. Lewis isn’t afraid to be a bit tongue-in-cheek with the reader which ultimately allows the reader to feel like they are in on the joke that is life for these characters and their impossible tasks that they face. I love the way that Lewis structured this novel. At points it was like I was reading a section of a D&D campaign and at others Lewis flexes her poetic abilities to have poems on the morning of certain events. I really enjoyed this read and will be recommending it to everyone I know. Bravo for this debut novel. ... show more

  • Super weird but addictively hilarious! 😂
Format: Kindle
I had such a fun time reading this. Yara is asked by God to eliminate Dominic, a powerful leader of the Bad Guys, despite having no fighting experience. Adrena doesn’t believe Yara should be the hero, so she attempts to fight Dominic before Yara gets the chance. The story is written in a way with a very prominent narrator, which took some getting used to. Also, this is an urban fantasy set in the 90s, so there are scenes that take place in a Sears and the characters watch TV, but they also ride horses, fight with swords, and use shields??! On the other hand, this was just so funny and entertaining that the things I liked outweighed the rest. I was originally a little skeptical about how much religion played into the plot, but this was written in such a satirical way that it just worked. ... show more

  • Completely and utterly unique & worth the read!
Format: Kindle
I can cheerfully and honestly say I’ve never read a book quite like this one! It’s extremely unique, it almost borders on overly earnest but I found walks the line well. I truly wanted to find out what happens to Yara and Adrena, and thought the mix of God and modernity really worked for me. This certainly won’t be for everyone, but if you like uniquely told stories and root for anyone who’s not a man in a story, this may be a hit to you too! ... show more

  • A Book Where The Main Character is Irrelevant to the Outcome
Format: Audiobook
A unique book is not automatically a good book. Yara was entirely irrelevant to the story, and none of the characters have any depth. There is no imagery, just nonsensical internal dialogue and constant breaking of the fourth wall, which feels lazy. If you are going to write with a nonbinary they/them protagonist, you have to do better to make the pronouns' meanings clear. There are far too many times that "they" could refer to one or many people. It's not enough simply to replace she/her with they/them and call it a day, like a global search and replace. You have to be clearer and more intentional with your writing so the reader doesn't have to stop every sentence and try to decipher who you are talking about. Finally there are too many recycled references and jokes that are not cited. "Sorry, escalator is temporarily stairs" is a well-known Mitch Hedberg joke. The author says "she thought she heard this somewhere" but didn't bother crediting its author. The tent peg death is Biblical as well, so it felt like that should have been referenced in a book that constantly references God. While the book is unique, it also feels cribbed from better writers. ... show more

  • No To My Liking
Format: Kindle
Definitely not my "cup of tea." I couldn't get past the first few pages. Definite waste of money for me.
