  • Canon 300mm F/2.8L IS II USM = Optical Perfection! Canon 300mm F/2.8L IS II USM = Optical Perfection!
This is my review of the Canon EF 300mm F/2.8L IS II USM. This lens is considered Canon's latest premiere telephoto lens released in August 2011. BUILD QUALITY The 300mm F/2.8 is a fixed focal length telephoto lens that provides higher magnification for long distance photography. This lens is made out of extremely solid and quality magnesium and titanium materials that is both water and dust-resistant. (Use common sense and don’t submerge in dirt nor water) The glass itself is made out of the most advanced fluoride materials to increase sharpness of image quality and eliminate any chromatic aberrations (green and purple lines along subject or object lines in images). Weighing in at a little over 5 pounds, this lens is built like a tank and there is absolutely no compromise about the sturdiness, the structure, and the materials used to design this lens. This is a telephoto lens and is meant for long-range sports, photojournalism, wildlife, and other events where the photographer is unable to get up close to the subject. The 300mm F/2.8 is the ideal telephoto lens that allows the photographer to hand hold with a camera without excessive strain on arms and hands. Any other lens with higher focal lengths will weigh too much and will most likely require a tripod or monopod. FUNCTIONALITY The 300mm F/2.8 uses the most advanced lens technology in the world. This lens provides the following functionalities: extremely fast autofocusing system, three modes of image stabilization, focus preset modes, wide 2.8 aperture (allows more light in lens for cleaner images in low light environments), and has a very quiet ultrasonic motor. REAL LIFE TESTING So how does this lens really work in the real world. I can honestly say that using the 300mm F/2.8 is a blast to use and it is fun to work with. Image quality with the use of this lens is extremely razor sharp and that is no exaggeration. If you use an image editing software to view and develop pictures. You will immediately notice the difference between this lens and other less non-professional lenses. It is simple to use this lens while providing profound results with numerous technological advances working in the background while shooting. For such a fairly big lens, it would have been nice if this lens allowed variable zoom the EF 70-200 mm F/2.8L IS II USM. However, I'm okay with a fixed focal length of 300mm because it provides a sweet spot for telephoto lens photography. For example, at a basketball game, if I was a shoot with the 70-200mm at the further end of the court, it would be difficult to get a good clean shot at 200mm max. A 400mm lens would provide or produce too much focal length at your subject at the other end of the court. 300mm provides the most balanced and right focal length for many common sports, photojournalist and wildlife events. In addition, this telephoto lens allows the photographer to increase the lens focal length to 420mm with a 1.4x tele converter and 600 millimeters with a 2.0x tele converter on a full frame camera. If you have a more common APS - C DSLR camera, you can increase the focal length of a 300mm F/2.8 to 672mm with a 1.4x tele converter and 960mm with a 2.0x tele converter respectively. Since this lens is light enough to hand hold while shooting, I always shoot without the tripod collar on because I find that it is obstructing and distracting to my hands. Unless there's a lot of sun outside or rain I also do not use the lens hood; I like the weight of this lens but I don't like my lens to look too long because the hood itself provides an additional 5 & 1/2 inches of length. It's also very cool that this lens has two side hooks that you can attach a strap to and place over your shoulders so that it's easy to walk around with without actually holding it in your hands when not in use. The value of this lens is so high that depreciation can be minimal after many years of use in mint condition. In summary, the Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM is the most professional telephoto lens that is close to optical image quality perfection. It provides the best balance based on high quality construction, advanced lens technology, weight and long distance shooting. Any lens longer than this just weighs too much, and a less professional version does not provide enough light and sharp glass. ... show more

  • Great lens
This lens came in great shape, and takes incredible images. I use to use a Canon 400mm f/2.8 L for soccer (grandkids), and as great as that lens is, it was either too long (when they played near field), or good for far field, but not quite long enough. The compromise was the 300 f/2.8 L II, great for near field (roughly the goal and closer) and I use a 1.4x teleconverter for the far field side. That works well, though I'm considering trying my Canon 500mm f/4 for far field. The Canon 300 f/2.8 II also is a great lens for basketball, especially opposite court, or if you are higher in the stands, would work well for the game. Also great for landscapes and larger wildlife ... show more

  • Ridiculous Lens!
Ridiculous was an adjective used by someone I know, when other superlatives were too weak in their description. There are a couple of lenses in my arsenal that are considered by many to be reference standards. But this one even leaves those behind and has no peer - in many different aspects. The image quality will blow you away, words are useless here, the pictures you get will astound you. Razor sharp across the entire(!) frame and bokeh that is crazy delicious - if you want that shallow depth-of-field. No distortion or aberrations to speak of. The three modes of Image Stabilization work great with 4-stops of assistance. I have been trying to post some pics of some zoo animals, but amazon has not uploaded them for some reason. However a link resides in the comments under this review. I have a 1.4x extender and have used it with this lens with great results with regard to picture quality. The extender degrades the quality of any lens it's attached to, but this lens is so astonishing that when brought down a notch, it still provides a better image quality than other lenses in this focal range without the extender - the only exception I imagine would be the big brother of this lens, the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM II. I did experience more hunting while focusing in darker rooms on objects that didn't have much contrast with the extender on than versus off - the focus was fine with the extender, but it was lightning fast without it. I can't speak much about the weather-proofing of this lens. It was a rainy day when it was delivered and I was too much of a wuss to bring it, or any other lens for that matter, outside. The build quality is simply superlative, something you notice immediately as you pull it out of its case. It's built like a tank. I debated on purchasing this one versus its 400mm sibling - the ability to use the lens without a mono/tripod. Size and weight were a factor in that consideration. This one is definitely the more portable of the two and the shoulder strap is really helpful. I can use this thing hand-held easily for 4-5 hours (and people complain about their 24-70mm being heavy, seriously?!?). Actually, I think my legs and calves get a great workout hauling this thing around! Unless you have experienced using another monster super-telephoto, be prepared to get noticed. This can be good and bad. Good in that you can pass out your business cards and look like a real professional. The bad is obvious, you'll receive comments (note that I purposely didn't use the word complements) and questions. Most people are curious and well-intended, but there's always a few oddballs that aren't. The only really big negative here, but you expect it given the quality of this lens, is the price. If you can cough up the funds, this lens will not let you down. Also, it might be a good thing to get insurance for this and your other camera gear which also add to the cost. Things breakdown, wear out and worse, stolen; these are painfully expensive repair and replacement bills. You might think after reading this that I'm trying to justify my purchase, don't believe me, go rent it! Guaranteed, you'll become a believer. I'll be looking into the 400 next year despite my scribbles above and the purchase of the 300. I think anyone would be more than satisfied with either one of these lenses - they are truly remarkable. Lastly, I appreciate Amazon sending a personal email upon their receipt of delivery status to ensure that everything about the purchase was to my satisfaction. After more than 100 purchases throughout the years with them, it was a nice surprise. Good luck and happy shooting! ... show more

  • Outstanding lens - but not worth it as an upgrade Outstanding lens - but not worth it as an upgrade
I have had my new EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L ii for six months now. This review will focus on a specific question; should current owners of the EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L "upgrade" to the mark ii version? The short answer is "no". But there are other reasons than "upgrading" to consider, and a special case for those who shoot film. So read on. Picture Quality Stunning. But not anymore than its predecessor. Frankly, you would be hard pressed to see the difference. It's there. And I know some tell-tale signs pixel peepers can look for. But no one can seriously argue that's its worth an upgrade for the picture IQ. Autofocus speed Same thing as before. I've seen claims the new lens is faster. Well, mine is not. Definitely not. I shoot a lot of tracking shots, and just as before I take 3 to make sure 1 is spot on. That's still pretty fast. And its quite impressive for all the glass that needs to move around - just not lightning fast. IS Here you get a noticeable upgrade. At least one stop. Also it settles faster. There is a new setting type "3" mode IS, which I personally prefer for most sports type shots. But remember that if the shutter speed is high enough its even better to turn off the IS. Finally, its somewhat less noisy than the original, which could be an important reason for film makers to upgrade. 1.4x A slight advantage for the newer model. If I shot birds for a living maybe a consideration. But then I would certainly go with a 400mm - so not sure how important this is (YMMV). I do not use 2.0x so no comments on that except to note that several reviews mention the mark ii as a slight upgrade. Handling & design This is where I feel I got the most from the upgrade. Its only a little lighter, but its just that much lighter to make a difference when you are hauling it for several hours. Also, the recessed buttons are so much better. I hated it when the old ones got pushed accidentally - and it happened too often to me. The new focus function is highly useful for filming. Pre-focussing is the same, and I'm personally not a big fan of Canon's implementation now or then. I disliked the new foot design when I first used the 200mm f/2.0 IS L ii, but on the EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L ii it feels "right" because I always use it with the foot on. I also use the 90 degree clicks to position the lens, a nice, practical design detail. The hood is slightly different and handles better, but there still that awful knob to contend with. Conclusion As an upgrade the better IS implementation and improved handling does not match the significant price differential between the original and the mark ii. At least not for photography. If using extenders is very important to you - than just maybe. Maybe. However, if you're shooting film - go for it if you can. The market place seems to confirm this answer. Judging from review counts on the net and the flickr pool for this lens not that many EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L ii's are flying off the shelves. I also seldom see any of these in the wild - not even at sports events. Probably a side effect of the brutal cost cuts in the traditional news industry. But there is more to the story. The original EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L is getting older every day. Some are still relatively new, but a lot are getting ready for their 10.th anniversary. With the very good used prices you can still get for your original lens and factoring in the cost of one major repair such as the IS will bridge a lot of the gap. In addition one day Canon will not repair these anymore - just ask 200L IS L f/1.8 owners about that sad scenario. And you get a short but welcome guarantee period that could be useful. Remember that not even Canon lenses last forever. And IS lenses simply tend to fail more than non-IS lenses. There is still some time for current owners to enjoy their original lens. Just remember to check the market place so you are not caught off guard and miss the boat when used prices begin to drop faster. If Sigma pulls off a great 300mm f/2.8 OS with three years warranty as they have just announced - that could hurt the old used lens prices a lot. It looses one star for missing out on value. Optically its still a five for sure. Accessories I Recommend: Don Zecklens Cap Black Rapid shoulder strap or similar ... show more

  • Solid performer, great image quality.
Amazon shipping was a day later than pro missed, but packaging was excellent and preserved Canon's original outer carton. The Canon lens performance was outstanding, right out of the box. This lens delivers on all of its promises. Beautiful image quality and rapid auto focus. No real need to get in depth here, if you are looking to purchase, then you already know and understand what you've are looking at. This is optimum quality performance. I use it with the 5DMIII and Sony A7R. Both deliver great images using this lens. This is the best, no question. ... show more

  • It really is great
I can only enthusiastically agree with the other 5-star ratings here. It's an amazing lens. I considered the 400mm and rented it for a weekend to try it out, but it's just too big, too heavy, and much more expensive. I can actually hand-hold this lens with the 2.0 tele-extender attached and get razor-sharp images at 600mm/F5.6. I was worried that the autofocus would hunt in this configuration, but my 5DIII had no problem nailing it every time. I don't shoot action or video (just animal stills) so I can't vouch for those use cases, but I would be very surprised if the lens doesn't hit it out of the park there as well. ... show more
