The reel spins really smoothly, and I don't hear any grinding or rattling when the line is loaded up. When rocking the handle back and forth, there is a bit of slop inside which causes a bit of knocking - I'm a bit worried about the longevity of the internal gearing... even though it works fine for now. There's a lever switching between a ratcheting wind, and open to rotating the winder both directions. The winder automatically engages once you start spinning the handle. It tensions very tight, and the tensioner is easy to rotate by hand on-the-fly. I also ordered a Tempo spinning reel of a similar size at the same time to compare, and honestly they feel exactly the same as each other, but have different castings - I think they're made in the same factory. The Cadence is more pricy, but has better quality castings. Unlike other more premium brands, this is lacking instructions, or a tear-down diagram. Certainly not the best value reel I've tried, but it's not bad. ... show more

I certainly was not shopping for a Cadence reel, in fact never even heard of it. I would consider myself an extremely experienced fresh water fisherman and good saltwater fisherman. This Cadence reel has all the features of the Daiwa's and Shimano's and then some for the money; it is not made in Japan but China. I combined it with a St. Croix 6.5' medium-lite rod. It had very good casting distance on 10 pound mono line and excellent action. We were fishing for Texas white bass and hybrid striper on Richland Chambers, we had good success with great equipment. Don’t buy. Real has grinding issues with pinion gear. It catches and the clutch bearing is bad. If you want a reel look elsewhere. Cadence has some serious design flaws and I’ve had 2 CS8 reels used them over a year and had major issues with grinding. Started using the vigor and noticed the same thing. It’ll catch you a fish and the reel looks nice, but that’s about it. Grinding is bad ... show more
