Description

He needs to open up. Jake Miller likes his life. It’s simple and quiet. Solitary. He’s taking the last thing his mother truly cared about before she died, the properties she owned, and making them his purpose. His time in the Army hadn’t allowed him to be there for her before, but this is something he can do now. Just him and his dog. Exactly how he wants it. Until her, his first tenant. With her innate openness and blinding smiles, the opposite of everything he thought he could possibly want. She needs to grow up. Casey Steadman has less to show for her twenty-nine years than she’d hoped. No white picket fence. No 2.5 kids. And definitely no loving husband. Just a few lukewarm relationships, an exceedingly crappy apartment, and a fabulous shoe collection (and the credit card debt to prove it). Moving into her new place is one big, high heeled step towards a new life. The stable, make-boring- mature-decisions kind of life that she needs to be able to prove to her family that she can live. What she wasn’t planning on was her hotter-than-Hades new landlord. Sparks are a-flying, and they’re the kind that can only come from a stiletto-loving, dog-hating, budget-repelling, relentlessly optimistic, youngest of five becoming the tenant and next door neighbor to a stoically silent, slightly pessimistic, ‘my only friend is my dog’, only child and former Army Ranger. Casey and Jake are total opposites. But when they come together, it just might be true love. Read more

  • Enjoyable
Casey Steadman is the youngest and only girl in her family of four brothers. She's obviously somewhat spoiled and immature, but not a bad person. At twenty-nine she's dissatisfied that her life isn't what she'd pictured. She has a job she basically likes but feels unappreciated and unfulfilled there, a situation which is aggravated by a co-worker who constantly tries to undermine her. Jake is quiet loner who's not a people-person. He's inherited some properties from his deceased mother that he's remodeling and looking to rent out. (He's staying in one of the houses.) Casey comes to see the house she's always admired and, although they get off to a poor start, Jake agrees to let her rent the place. He has a dog; she hates dogs but agrees to dog-sit his when he has to be away for the weekend. She's in a highly agitated state when Jake returns because his dog chewed up one of her shoes. She's a shoe-aholic and can't resist buying more shoes when she sees a pair she loves. Despite a shaky start, the two begin to open up to each other. There is a sexual assault but it's not graphic and the author handles it well. I enjoyed the story and will read the other books about two of her brothers, Tate and Dylan. ... show more

  • Fun, easy read with charming leads **SPOILER**
This was a fun and easy read. There are some chuckle worthy moments, and both Casey and Jake are truly charming leads. All the characters were interesting and fun. I thought Ms. Sorensen handled the aftermath of Casey's trauma extremely well. Casey's traumatic event could be a trigger for some people (women who have been victims of assault/rape), it almost was for me - it's that well written, as is Casey's aftermath. The aftermath had me in empathetic tears, and despite being a HSP, I rarely am that emotional when I read this genre. I look forward to Rachel and Liz's stories. My only real issue, and it's not even a major one, was it needs an edit. There are so many missing words - small, minor ones. I really don't like when a book has a lot of errors, but these weren't horrific, so, fortunately, they didn't pull me out of the story. ... show more

  • Heartwarming *trigger warning in review that does reveal a plot point/spoiler*
Karla is an excellent writer that never disappoints. This book was a extremely heartwarming, & hopeful. Characters are 3D, with true to life dreams, failings, fears, and lives. Kara takes the time to flesh out a plot that flows seamlessly, and has great pacing. Supporting characters are just has full and fresh as the main, and I was instantly invested in them which took me perfectly into the world created in the book. I could see the scenes coming alive as I read and had a smile on my face throughout the story. I also laughed, a lot, this books funny! In a true to life humorous way, it didn't feel put on or cheesy. ***trigger warning*** While it is a "spoiler" - I feel it is very important to warn survivors that an attempted SA does take place. Discerning readers will quickly see the signs the plot is moving thst way. The scene is NOT graphic in nature, and the writing of the scene & its after affects is handled with care by the author. I would like to thank the author for the care shown in book towards this subject. ... show more

  • Amazing must read.
I was looking for a book to read after being in a book slump and found I had this on my kindle. I had no idea I had even purchased this book. I wish someone would have told me sooner that I was being an idiot for not reading this. That being said I fell in love with the characters in this book and I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series. Karla has an amazing talent that needs to be recognized so please be smart and purchase all her books. Jake is a very quiet person that seems happy with his solitude. He is in the middle of remodeling the properties his mother left him when a pushy, definitely spoiled princess storms into his life. She needs a place to live and Jake begrudgingly decides to let her be his first tenant. She did promise that she would pay on time and he would never notice she was there. Yeah that seems like it will work. Jake soon realizes that Casey may be the one thing he never knew he wanted. Casey has had somewhat of a sheltered life but she really wants to change that. Finding out the house she absolutely loves is up for rent is the icing on the cake. She can totally pay for this duplex and only have to skimp on a few things. Things with work and other circumstances seem to be bringing Casey and Jake closer together. They just might be the each others soulmates. ... show more

  • Not so by your side
Um I had a hard time being invested in this book. Jake had very little interaction with the heroine Casey. If it weren't for the last two chapters, I would have put his presence at about 20% with most of it lacking actual emotional connecting conversation or activity. The majority of the paragraphs dealt with Casey's job situation, friend/family interaction and shoe addiction without Jake's presence. I want to feel the attraction and that was lacking. Still beautifully written and Ms Sorensen' latest novel "Focused" is an all time favorite for me. ... show more

  • Three little words? I liked this!
Ms Sorenson crafts good stories with supporting characters who aren't just 'extras'. They made me laugh a lot, tense with anxiety and outraged. All the good 'feels' of a good story. But... her books would be even better with some simple copy editing. There were too many errors of grammar and vocabulary. ... show more
