Description

A STANDALONE DARK ROMANCE From New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle comes a dark and delicious Dracula retelling filled with secrets and lies, dangerous liaisons and a forbidden, student-teacher, second chance love story with a twist. "My heart will always find yours." Dahlia Abernathy has only known revenge. When her parents were killed at an early age by vampires, Dahlia spent the rest of her life under the thumb of the Witch's Guild being trained to kill them. Her latest mission sends her undercover to a prestigious music academy in Venice, Italy. Her goal? To kill Professor Valtu Aminoff, her teacher and the notorious vampire who inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. But getting close to a dangerous vampire like Professor Aminoff is one thing. Falling for him is another. With Dahlia's appearance disguised under a glamor spell, Valtu has no idea that the woman who has become his new dark obsession is actually the reincarnation of the woman he loved and lost twice before. And Dahlia doesn't remember that the very man she has been sent to kill is the love of her life. Will their love come through and transcend time once again? Or are the fated lovers destined to let history repeat itself? Blood Orange is a modern-day Dracula retelling about the "real-life" Dracula that inspired Bram Stoker. This is a dark vampire romance with plenty of content warnings (please check interior of book for extensive list as it is +++++spicy). It is a complete standalone (AKA you do not need to read any other books prior). Read more

  • Loved it!
Blood Orange by Karina Halle. I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I haven't read a good vampire book in a while, and I ended up enjoying this one! Val (the MMC) is delicious. I love his character and how he's protrayed. He is a bit cocky though 😂 Dahlia (FMC) is a warrior type, but relatable, for me at least. I enjoyed the deeply forbidden relationship, the idea behind the main plot. I enjoyed the jumps in time, seeing the past and present. It was done well, allowing you to understand Val better. I wish there was a bit more on Dehlia's past, but there was enough to make sense of everything and not knowing did not take away from the story. The ending broke my heart. I'm jumping into book two because I need to know what happens next with these two! If you enjoy spice, kinks, vampires, witches, forbidden romance, professor/student romance you will enjoy it. There are some dark parts, mainly around death, miscarriage, stillbirths, but those were the only things I would consider dark. Please read the trigger warnings if you do decide to give it a try! ... show more

  • Super spicy Dracula retelling with a modern setting!
This review will cover the two books in the Dracula duet, Blood Orange and Black Rose, as a whole and I will attempt to give a good overview without any major spoilers. The first book, Blood Orange, was so good! I loved the spicy scenes that were sprinkled throughout the book and the romantic development between the two main characters. Dracula’s story has always been one that’s fascinated me over the years, so I was happy to discover this retelling of the original storyline. For the second book, Black Rose, there was definitely so much more spice and probably took up over half the book (it felt like every other chapter had an intimate scene and a few honestly could’ve been left out). The “final battle” to overcome the looming evil presence from book one was quite short and I wish it had been a little more fleshed out, that being said, I did like the overall ending and was happy with how the duology concluded. The narrators did a good job, they weren’t my favorite ever performances, but certainly not the worst I’ve ever experienced. The male narrator did a good job with Dracula’s accent and it added to the atmosphere of the storyline and book. I wish this book had been a duet narration, rather than a dual narration because the male voice for the FMC was very flat and was the same with the female voice for the MMC being very flat, especially during the spicy scenes. Unfortunately, that did mess with my connection to the characters, but I understand that it is more expensive typically for authors to commission audiobooks via duet style rather than dual style, so I understand when authors choose not to go this route. I’ve had these two books on my To Be Read (TBR) list forever and I wish I had started them sooner than now, but they do make great books for spooky season 2024, so I’m very happy to be experiencing them now! ... show more

  • Gothic spice in time for Halloween
“The darkness in me calls to the darkness in you." Blood Orange is a spicy Dracula retelling that follows Dahlia Abernathy, who is orphaned at a young age, then, immediately taken under the wing of the Witch’s Guild to be trained as a vampire slayer. Now, she has been dispatched to Venice by the Guild to kill Valtu Aminoff, the notorious vampire inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Valtu and Dahlia are so drawn to each other…maybe it’s the forbidden student/teacher vibes…or maybe it’s the fact that Dahlia is Valtu’s reincarnated lover that he has loved and lost twice already. I’ve been in the mood for paranormal romances this Halloween season, and I’ve had this book on my radar for quite a while. I’m a bit impressed with myself for even reading an actual book from my TBR. This was just a really, fun read, especially between some of the intense stories I’ve read recently. The spice was a little outside of my comfort zone but I couldn’t take my eyes away. So be sure to check the trigger warnings! I loved the idea of this book but I do think I was underwhelmed about certain aspects. It gave off a “campy” vibe and I just embraced it! It is Dracula after all. I liked both Dahlia and Valtu and the ending was certainly not what I anticipated. This is part of a duology so I am curious as to how everything gets resolved. ... show more
