My third Bunn, love this coffee maker. Coffee ready in no time. The thermal keeps coffee hot for about 2 to 2.5 hours. For longer heat I take thermal off the maker and place a dish towel over top of it to keep heat from escaping. East to clean. I recommend using Bunn filters. Be sure to clean the spout under the basket, it screws off. Also be sure you only have one filter in the basket or you will have a mess!!!

(Update 2024) I am raising my review to 5 stars. After six years of use, this coffee maker has proven to be great! It still makes piping hot coffee in record time. It still looks and works practically as good as new. See below some of my suggestions. They all still apply, but the little rubber stopper in the lid is still there and working fine! My daughter loves this coffee maker so much that she purchased one. Shortly thereafter, they moved to another state with their nearly new Bunn, still under warranty. When they arrived at their new home and plugged it in it didn't work. I wondered if they forgot to fill it up with water but they swore they did not forget! Still it didn't work. They contacted Bunn and were sent a brand new coffee maker! That's customer service! The new one works great. So I am sold. These things have risen in price exponentially thanks to our wonderful government, imo. But I still recommend this to anyone who wants a good coffee maker that is well made, easy to use and makes excellent coffee. Maybe I should become a dealer! :-) If you need a good coffee maker without a lot of bells and whistles but one that makes good coffee FAST and is covered by good customer service, you won't be disappointed! 5 stars! (End of update) ============================ I have had this coffee maker for over a year now and am overall very pleased with it. It consistently makes good coffee quickly and piping hot. My family makes several pots a day, so I feel that I have used the machine as much as most people would in two or three years and it is still going strong. At the price, I would expect it to last at least five years or more. We'll see how that works out. The only reason I gave it a four star rating rather than a five star rating is because I feel that Bunn still needs to do some engineering upgrades. I make these suggestions while realizing that there are some limitations due to the fact that the machine pre-heats the water. But just throwing out some ideas from the consumer's point of view that some bright engineers might tackle and that some marketing managers might consider as selling points. Here are this layman's suggestions (slight complaints): 1. I like the on/off switch, but I feel that it is ridiculous that you can burn the coffee maker up if you plug it up without filling it with water first. I did not make that mistake and Bunn gives a warning, but it would still be VERY easy to do. There should be an automatic power shut-off that would prevent this automatically if you plug it up empty! Be warned! 2. The coffee carafe sometimes drips down the side and from the bottom when pouring. This is a common problem with may coffee pots, and I do not know the solution. Obviously, pouring too fast will cause this; but it also sometimes happens no matter how slowly you pour the coffee. At other times, it pours perfectly. Not really sure what to suggest on this one. 3. I really like the design of the stainless steel carafe. It keeps coffee hot a long time, is easy to clean and only has two parts .... or is it three? While washing the lid one day, I discovered that there is a tiny rubber "stopper" or whatever in the center of the lid that will easily come out! I almost didn't notice it and it could easily have been lost. This needs to be changed. I always worry that this little rubber part will get lost by mistake. I think the fact that this will come off the lid so easily when hand washing is crazy! 4. The only other suggestion I have is that it would be very nice if this machine had a temporary flow-stop so that you could pour a cup of coffee while it is still making (dripping). This is a real picky suggestion since it only takes a few minutes to make a full pot. But the final few drips seem to take a long time to stop and you will make a small mess if you don't wait. It would be great it you could start pouring coffee when the main flow finishes and then place the pot back to catch the last few drips. Very picky and just a consumer wish list. This is not a real problem, but I always wish the drips would finish! :-) Overall, I would highly recommend this coffee maker. It has many great features that Bunn will point out in their advertising. It works as advertised for me. These comments should be taken just as a few fairly picky suggestions to make this unit even better. If Bunn will introduce some of these suggestions into the next model and send me a free one to test, I'll review it fairly and thoroughly! If you drink coffee by the pot and you need a coffee maker, I can highly recommend this one. I am a satisfied customer so far after over a year and a lot of coffee.

Without a doubt, this is the absolute best coffee maker you can buy for your home. There is none better. Our first Bunn lasted well over 10 years. It still brewed coffee perfectly but developed an occasional leak. In that 10 years, it went through well over 5,000 cycles without a problem. (That is a conservative estimate because our Amazon order history shows we purchase a case of 600 Bunn filters every year.) Since the thermal carafe keeps your coffee hot for several (about 6) hours, there is no heating plate on the machine, so your coffee never over cooks. Also since the carafe is metal, you don’t have to worry about shattered glass if you are accidentally a little rough with it or just clumsy like me. The machine stays on all the time so you never have to wait for the water to heat up before making the coffee. Just add water in the top and it flows down to the reservoir to push the existing hot water out! Brews a 10 cup pot in 3-4 minutes. There is an on/off switch on the side in case you are on an extended vacation and want to turn it off. After several days the water will evaporate a little if the machine is not regularly used. You should only use official Bunn filters. Regular coffee filters are a little shorter and can not handle the water volume a Bunn maker uses. Regular filters will overflow causing grounds in the coffee. Although the Bunn machines are generally more expensive than other makers, they are well worth the price. They last MUCH longer and are faster at brewing. If you are a serious coffee drinker, this the the best option for you!

I would like to start with this is my third coffee maker in less than 6 months. However, this one I really hopes can last longer because I really love it. When I first set up the system I was concerned because the bottom is plastic and didn't have a heating plate. Upon further inspection, I realized that it does not need a hot plate because the croft is thermal and keeps the coffee warm for you. The process of filling the tank was different. Leave the machine off and unplugged. You have to pour water into the coffee maker 2 or 3 times spacing out 4 minutes till the pot has water in the croft. So to make sure I am explaining myself correctly is that you pour a coffee pot worth of water into the machine. Place the coffee pot in its slot and close the lid where you pour the water into the machine. If you close that lid then you are going to allow the coffee or water to start flowing and can make a mess. Then after 4 minutes have passed get the pot to rinse it out and refill for round 2. I kept this process up until I had a full croft. The reason you do this is to fill the water tanks. When the tanks are filled plug in the coffee maker and turn on the machine. You have to wait 15 min for the water to warm up. When the water is hot and ready to use and fill the croft to your desired amount. Remember when you finish pouring cold water in do not close the lid because it will start brewing hot coffee. FYI, the cold water goes to the bottom of the tank and pushes out the hot water because heat rises. Oh and use the 4inch tall filters because otherwise, you are going to have grains of coffee a be unsatisfied with the coffee. maker. I was so excited when the morning came and I was making my first cup of coffee with my new mug :). The coffee began to pour and I was so excited because my cousin said Bunn is the best and I believe him! Watching the coffee drip was exciting for me because I am so picky about my coffee. I will drink it but I like my coffee hot and do not have that burnt taste of the coffee. I am watching and waiting for the last drop to drop so I can taste the coffee plus I had been without a coffee maker for over a week. I couldn't wait for that first cup of coffee to test. I poured into my cute mug and it didn't splash and it poured smoothly. So far so good. I sat down and had to wait a few minutes for my coffee to cool off. The wait for the coffee was worth it. I love coffee and I have not had a decent cup in a very long time. The coffee was rich and tasted so good I should have listened to my cousin years ago but I am stubborn. The second cup is just as good. The coffee didn't taste burnt and I was so happy. The reason it didn't taste burnt is that the croft is basically a thermos and that is how the coffee stays hot. I accidentally forgot to clean out the pot until the next day and I was so impressed that the coffee was still a bit warm. For me, I was impressed with the length of time the croft keeps the coffee warm. I have also never spent so much money on a coffee maker but I did and I am so grateful I did because the coffee is perfect and the coffee doesn't taste burnt after 30 min. I cannot express how good the coffee is and how well it keeps the coffee hot. This is the best coffee maker I have ever had and I cannot brag about it enough. I have only got to use it twice and omg I think I am spoiled. It is worth the money of not having burnt coffee. So yummy! Remember tall filters or you will have issues. It comes with some.

This coffee maker is very good overall, but there are a few things that will leave you a bit frustrated. PROS: 1. Fast... yes, you have to leave it on or use a timer so the water is hot already (minimal electricity use, however it is using some), but 10 cups in ~3min is very nice. 2. Hot. I am not too much of a temperature snob, but I like hot coffee. This machine brews coffee too hot to drink black (which is a good thing), but is perfectly hot after I put in half-half or milk. 3. Thermal carafe works better than other makers'. This carafe keeps coffee at a drinkable temp much longer than my previous Cuisinart did. Maybe the coffee is hotter to begin with, but either way, I'm able to drink my coffee without heating it in the microwave for several hours. Other strengths of this carafe are that it pours much more smoothly and easily than my Cuisinart, the top is much easier to take on and off and it is easier to clean because of a large opening. 4. Simplicity... no clocks, timers, programming or other gizmos. Considering these gizmos have been the downfall (breaking and requiring buying a new machine) of my past 3 coffee makers, I see this is a positive. Less to break. Plus, we have 13 clocks in the general vicinity and rarely used any of the programming features. CONS: (NOTE: Many of these assume you are trying to brew a full pot) 1. Overflow of the brew basket grinds. We've been trying various grinds (even going into French press territory), but have not been able to prevent grinds from ending up overflowing the filters (yes, we are using Bunn filters). The GOOD thing is that, even though the brew basket will be filled to the top (over the filter top) with grinds after your brew, surprisingly few of the grinds end up in the carafe... not sure how to explain how they don't end up in there, but it saves a star that they don't. 2. Strength of the coffee. Obviously there are competing goals... speed vs. strength of brewed coffee. We like strong coffee... guests have been known to water down our brew to get it to their liking. This creates a problem for us when going to coarser grinds to prevent the brew basket overflow. We end up with coffee that is too weak. However, if you go to a finer grind, you risk the worst problem of them all... 3. Brew basket water overflow. This is the disaster scenario where you grind too fine and the water cannot pass as fast as the spray head is delivering it. The result is water overflowing the brew basket and a lake of very hot grind water all over your counter. 4. Carafe overflow. Not sure why the design allows this, but with a "full" reservoir per the setup instructions, you can add more water than the carafe can hold. For example, you go to brew a pot, add water without measuring to the little grate and close the lid to start the brew... but, the coffee keeps flowing even after the carafe is full. The result is hot coffee on your counter. Luckily you cannot put too much extra water in so the overflow is minimal, but still... 5. Given all of the reviews about it, they should probably add a switch to start the brew versus relying on the closing of the lid. It does not cause too much confusion once you get used to it (and instructions/warning are printed in the plastic on the lid), but it is just different (or not intuitive) enough to be something you have to "think" about. CONCLUSION: We do really like this coffee maker, however you have to "learn" how to use it to suit your needs and prevent problems. For us, this means grinding more coarsely (to med-coarse from med-fine) and grinding for ~3/4 of a pot (to limit the grind overflow in the basket), using water for ~6 cups (to keep the strength high and prevent carafe overflow) and using only Bunn filters. My wife and I each get a big "cup" of coffee (or 2 small cups) and then we brew another pot. While this sounds like a pain as I write it, it is not really too much of a hassle due to the speed the machine brews... our only real problems are related to the static charge created by our grinder, but that is another topic altogether. :)

I would like to start by thanking all the other reviewers who have submitted to amazon about this machine, both good and bad. I read (and write) a lot of amazon reviews and take them seriously. Now, on to the machine itself. I have never owned a Bunn before, let alone a unit with an insulated carafe. But I wasn't very worried, for three reasons: 1. Bunn's storied history as an outstanding coffee maker. 2. Excellent reviews by my fellow Amazonians regarding the product and Bunn's customer service department, should something happen to go wrong. 3. Amazon's excellent reputation regarding returns. I ordered the product and received it 2 days later. I opened the box and set the product up in about 5 minutes. Filled it with water and was ready to make my first pot in another 15 minutes (one time initial heating after install). I used the same type and amount of coffee that I used in my old pot. Let me tell you, I was blown away by the added presence of flavor that I had never experience in any of my previous coffee makers, plus there was no bitterness at all. This is all due to the way a Bunn coffeemaker works. The water (2 pots worth) is preheated in the tank to 200 F. This is the perfect temp for proper extraction from the grounds, but doesn't over extract. Other pots flash heat the water and this causes unevenly heated water to pass across the grounds. If its too hot, you get over extracted bitter coffee; too cold, and well... its weak and you've wasted your grounds. I have actually slightly reduced the amount of grounds I use, because this machine gets all the good out of what I put in and doesn't let anything go to waste. One recommendation (and this goes for any pot) remove the grounds from the basket a soon as the pot it made. This prevents any over extracted cold bitter drips from landing in your great new pot of hot coffee. This machine is also extremely fast. It will make a fresh pot in 5 minutes or less. It advertises 3 minutes, but I have found 5 is more accurate by the time it actually quits dripping. This speed is achieved because there are already 2 whole pots worth of hot water waiting to be pushed across the grounds by the newly added water. There are no fancy controls or bells and whistles to set a timer and make your coffee before you wake up, but do you really need all this when you can have a pot made in 5 minutes (less if you only make a half pot). Also, there is no need to load the coffee pot the night before and lose a ton of flavor by having your grounds exposed to air overnight. My fears of a thermal carafe were also relieved. I made a pot of coffee one morning at 6:00am and came home at noon and had another cup that was still plenty warm. My only recommendation is preheating the carafe before you make your coffee, only if you plan on drinking it for several hours. Recap: A. Excellent flavor & fast brew time, due to preheated (perfect temp) water. B. Plenty of heat retention in the thermal carafe. C. Looks great on my counter top.

I'm not very happy with this coffee maker. It's a bare-boned unit that is essentially featureless except that it makes a good tasting pot of coffee. If you have never used a coffee maker that contains a hot water storage reservoir, this one works differently. You measure the amount of water you want (external to the unit), then pour the water into the unit. Then the lid is closed, the new water replaces the hot water in the reservoir which flows into the coffee in the filter and then into the carafe. Our unit came shipped with a coffee sprayer nozzle that had barely any threads so it couldn't be screwed on to the bolt where the hot water flows to fill the coffee filter. The coffee sprayer nozzle is supposed to disperse the water across the coffee grounds more evenly which does appear to work adequately. I called customer support and they immediately sent out 2 replacement sprayers and in addition 2 flow restrictors (I read prior to purchase that some people needed a flow restrictor to make a stronger pot of coffee). Customer service rep was very friendly and their service was fast so kudos to them. The new sprayer works as intended. I also tested the flow restrictor (in place of the sprayer) but the coffee tasted the same to me either way. Pros: • Makes a decent pot of coffee • Once the water is hot, the coffee brews fast • Front loading of water for coffee is conveniently located in the front of the unit Cons: • In my opinion, considering its lack of features, the unit is too expensive. I've owned other coffee makers that cost much less that also make a good tasting pot of coffee. • Something smells like plastic when the power is on and the water is hot. This is my primary complaint and the reason for a 1-star rating! This smell is not overly strong but it can be smelled in the entire kitchen area. The smell is not going away after a few weeks. I have no idea what this is (if it's a plastic seal or something like that) because the hot water storage container is supposed to be made from stainless steel. I'm concerned that plastic off-gassing is contaminating the water and air. Since it is NOT recommended to turn the heater off due to risk of bacteria growing, we are hoping that the smell will disappear. It seems to be subsiding after about 1 month of use. • The coffee maker is completely featureless except for an on/off switch that they call a 'vacation' switch. This is located on the side of the machine so it's not easily visible except up close. o No LED to indicate the unit is receiving power. We've made a couple of pots of coffee when my ground fault detector outlet was tripped and that's really annoying not to mention a waste of expensive coffee. o No LED to indicate when the unit is heating the water, therefore you have to guess when the water is hot again to make a second pot of coffee in quick succession (for example a pot of regular and then decaf). o No brew button. Water starts flowing when you close the lid after adding water. And don't forget to place the carafe in its rightful place under the filter because if you don't there will be a big mess and the flow of coffee cannot be stopped. o No clock, coffee brew settings (strong, weak, etc.) or any type of other standard feature found on many units. • The carafe doesn't seem to keep the coffee hot long enough (maybe 2-3 hours?). There are two holes in the carafe, one in the lid, the other is the pour spout. Neither can be closed to keep the coffee warmer. I therefore have decided to pour any leftover coffee into a thermos which keeps the coffee warm all day. This defeats the purpose of having a thermal carafe. • The stainless steel water reservoir is not removable so cleanliness of the reservoir over time cannot be verified. We just completed our first cleaning cycle following the manufacturer's recommendation which does NOT include draining the reservoir. We added vinegar water which I presume is mixed with the existing hot water, let it stand, then ran 4 pots of water through it to remove the smell of the vinegar. At that point, the coffee it made still made the half-and-half curdle so we ran 4 more pots of water through it. We ended out draining all of the water and refilling the reservoir. In the future, we will drain the water, fill with vinegar water, soak, drain the water again, then refill with fresh water. • Need to measure amount of water with another household item (measuring cup for example). • The 'no drip' feature of the carafe is nice, but because of this, you must remove the lid from the carafe in order to pour out all coffee, and when you do the lid will dribble a spill few drops of coffee collected on the top onto the counter. Not a big deal, but annoying nevertheless. In summary, it really seems that Bunn has overly streamlined the design of this coffee maker at the expense of including some very basic albeit not very costly features (such as a couple of LED indicators), but at the same time kept the price high. I cannot recommend this coffee maker due to the plastic smell when the water is hot, its lack of basic features and relatively high price.

I’m not a coffee snob but I like good coffee. I got an Italian espresso machine that wasn’t crazy expensive and it’s lasted at least 20 years now but as you know you got to have that pot of coffee. I’ve been using a percolator for years. I’ve gone through 3 electric percolators over the past few years. The only one that has lasted is the stove top percolator which makes wonderful coffee but it can take a lot of time. Not ideal for the morning before work. I do love the percolator and it’s not going anywhere we just needed a solution for morning coffee that’s faster. Bunn has a great reputation in the restaurant world and others in my family have had them. I love the simplicity of the machine. Not a lights on it. Hot water ready to go all the time. It took me a few brews to get the grind setting to our liking using our grinder. It’s set just a couple of clicks below medium toward fine. I removed the little rubber piece off the top of the pot where the coffee pours in from the funnel to avoid water overflow since some of the grinds may find their way out of the filter basket probably because I grind it a little finer than most and probably put a bit more coffee in the basket than most. We like it strong and robust. We don’t care if some coffee grinds get in the pot so no need for the tiny little rubber piece catching grinds. Just let it settle and the grinds will find their way to the bottom of the pot. Like a percolator or cowboy coffee pot. Don’t be scared of the grinds. After getting it dialed in to our tastes, WE LOVE IT! So fast, unreal fast. My wife loves coffee too but not a coffee prepper. She’s doesn’t do the grinding and never fools with the esspresso machine or percolator. All that falls on me. She just wants it delivered to her hand. Now all I have to do is setup the machine over night with the grinds ready in the funnel, pot full of water, and all the has to do is pour the water in the machine. Done. Love this thing.
