We have three 2 TeraByte Linkstation 210s and are very happy with the product. They replaced 12 year old Buffalos that were totally reliable but recently began to have power supply issues (dried caps). They also had to be restarted after power failures. Happy to report that the new 210s will automatically boot up. No UPS needed. The power supply is external. I am seeing many negative reviews here that probably reflect a lack of documentation and "walk-me-through-the-entire-process" setup. Frankly, I do not even bother with software. The Buffaloes find a home through DHCP default, I use a network scan to find them, and then log in as administrator. Takes about 2 minutes to begin logging in and setup. Once I change admin password, set a static IP, rename the drive, enable FTP and other services, then it is ready to go. For those concerned about server message block revisions, this device is SMBv2 which is appreciated by Windows 10 for now. It works just fine with our Win 10s, our MAC, and our Linux Mint machines. Supports Time Machine and has a built-in printer and Media server. Built-in incremental backup using external USB drive. It does not have a readily-accessible tweak for every little thing as it is targeted for home use, but it gets the job done. In conclusion, if you know about NAS and networks then this should work great for you. If you are not, then apparently Buffalo needs to sit down and discover a way for non-techies to get it running. Maybe a library of videos to accompany knowledge base PDFs. Figure out a means to explain what a router is, how to log in and setup the firewall for port forwarding. How to map a network drive. Or, in these days, just find a 10 year old kid to help you get it going. ... show more

I needed a backup solution that would integrate with Active Directory (AD) for security and backup Windows Server 2012 R2 drives. This NAS requires SMBv1 to be turned on to make the AD integration work. The problem is that Microsoft has deprecated SMBv1, which means; don't use SMBv1 because Microsoft intends for it to be removed from Windows in a future release. Because of this requirement I decided to send it back and look for different device. As far as the configuration of the NAS goes (other than Active Directory) it was pretty easy to figure out if you already understand networking but if not, I would recommend something other than this device. It does include a copy of NovaStor Backup but that is also an ancient version. ... show more

I really wanted this to work. There were a lot of reviewers complaining about setup. I'm not an IT pro, but I'm better than most amateurs. So I figured I could handle it. The other reviewers had complained the documentation was inaccurate; they were correct. After about five hours, I started calling support. 1- Amazon support-one hour. They tried but were pretty clueless. 2- Buffalo support- First I had to wait two days. They don't work after five or on weekends. When I finally got a tech he spent (using a remote connection) one and a half hours getting it set up using the Buffalo utilities. When I pointed out that it still didn't work in my Windows 10 environment he blew me off saying they "don't support Windows application". 3- Microsoft Support- After a considerable wait, another two hours. I got lucky. I got a tech really willing to help. He worked diligently,, jumping through all kinds of hoops to get it to work. He finally got it going on my main PC. He also explained I would have to repeat this on the other PCs on my LAN. He even wrote out a detailed description of what he had done. At this point, I had one PC connected to the NAS- kinda like an external drive. Careful to copy every setting I could find, I waded back into my other workstations. Nothing worked. Another five hours and I concluded the Buffalo NAS simply wasn't worth the hassle, not in this age of Office 365. One other note: The 2T of storage promised turned out to about 1.8 T with the Buffalo utilities installed. This seems excessive. ... show more

i returned it. i put it on the network and my up-to-date mac never found the device. First the software install had an issue because the software is 32bit and macs prefer 64 bit software. when it didn't find the device i looked on the website and it was useless. the instruction insert and the online pdf had no troubleshooting information if you enjoy tinkering to get a product to do what it should do right out of the box this could be a fun hobby for you. But if you just want it to work the way it's supposed to, this isn't the product. Not at all sure how it would work with Windows ... show more

I read the reviews before I bought this and noticed that the 5 star reviews say it connected with no issue and the 1 star reviews say they had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get it to work or it didn't work at all. I decided to roll the dice since it's such a good price and see what happens, and I don't regret it at all!! I didn't even need the cd, I plugged it in as the instruction pictures showed, and it worked right away (on my MacBook Pro running Mojave). It seems like a lot of them are defective, so if it doesn't with right away, maybe exchange it! This is a great value!! ... show more
